Hello lovelies! Emma here, your favourite pink tutu-wearing time-traveller, and it's time for another trip into the enchanting world of ballet history! This month, we're whisking ourselves back to 3rd March, 1935, a date brimming with ballet magic! Grab your pinkest tutu, darling, because Magic Meg is taking us on a whirlwind journey to the Big Apple, where ballet is about to have its very own New York moment!
I can't tell you how excited I am to be back in New York City - I adore its vibrant energy! The skyscrapers gleam against the crisp, spring air and the honking taxis feel like the soundtrack to the ballet itself. Imagine! Such bold colours, such rapid movement, such vibrant rhythm, it's as if the entire city has been choreographed! And speaking of choreography, let's dive into the exciting world of ballet that was taking New York City by storm in 1935!
This month, we're heading to the Metropolitan Opera House, where, just a couple of weeks ago, on 21st February, a new era in ballet was inaugurated with the debut of a groundbreaking production! "The Beloved," a three-act ballet choreographed by the brilliant Léonide Massine, took everyone's breath away with its passionate storytelling, stunning artistry, and revolutionary blend of Russian ballet and a contemporary New York sensibility.
And let me tell you, the costumes! A whirlwind of luxurious velvets, vibrant silk, and swirling chiffons – a real ode to the glamour of the age. They're almost enough to distract you from the intricate choreography, though Massine's signature elegance really did leave a lasting impression on the American ballet scene.
And, you wouldn't believe who the leading lady was! A rising star at the time, none other than the absolutely breathtaking Tamara Geva! Her talent is absolutely phenomenal, and seeing her in this role, it's no surprise she's considered to be one of the greatest dancers of her generation. I just love how ballet is such a beautiful way to bring people together. It really is an art form for everyone.
We even saw a glimpse of the incredible costumes that were to grace the stage just two weeks after our visit. Imagine, a whole month of performances of "The Beloved"! Can you even fathom how many breathtaking tutus and sleek leotards would be shimmering in the spotlight? Just picturing them makes my heart skip a beat!
Now, you know me, a true ballet aficionado wouldn't just be satisfied with one dazzling show, so after a truly incredible performance, we headed out into the city's bustling streets, which, I must say, have a certain theatrical vibe, as though they are a backdrop for a grand performance in themselves. But we were in pursuit of the most extraordinary ballerina shop - you see, it’s like a second home to me, the one place in New York where they’ve always known what my ballet dreams look like! A sanctuary of elegance, I dote on everything that sparkles from ballet slippers to balletwear and everything in between.
With the world of ballet fashion spinning around me, the thrill of it all has my head whirling, my heart beating, and my mind conjuring up even more extravagant visions of shimmering pink tutus. And I, well I'm practically skipping and twirling like a sugar plum!
It really is all I ever want in life! Nothing feels better than twirling with grace, embracing the love of this art form with everything I am.
However, all this ballet excitement wouldn’t be complete without an evening at the New York Ballet Club! Imagine a beautiful room full of dancers and enthusiasts, chatting and giggling over glasses of champagne – it truly felt like being in a scene from a ballet movie!
The entire experience was truly magical. I felt a real connection to the dancers and artists. The spirit of community and love of ballet was palpable and truly heartwarming. I even had the opportunity to dance with some of them, showcasing a bit of my Derbyshire ballet spirit. Their elegant grace and passion were simply breathtaking.
To finish off the evening, a charming performance was given by the famed ballerina, Ruth Page, known for her expressive talent. Watching her movements flow and feel like the purest form of movement truly embodies the magic that dance can have. I know I must add this story to my collection. I find myself filled with so much awe and wonder at these ballet journeys, it seems like I always take a little bit of the energy back home with me.
Well, darling, this concludes our incredible adventure for now. Next month, we'll be exploring the world of ballet through the pages of time again. I'm keeping it hush-hush for now, but I can tell you that it involves one of the greatest ballet legends ever - and possibly a new ballet school.
Until next month, don't forget to twirl, dream, and spread a little bit of pink tutu magic wherever you go!
Yours always,
Emma xoxo
