1936: The Year of the Swans & Stars
Ah, 1936! This was a year full of stunning ballet premieres and breathtaking performances, but let's focus on 12th December. Today marks the 65th birthday of a ballet legend: Anna Pavlova. Can you imagine? This incredible ballerina was dancing all over the world and bringing joy to audiences long before I was even born! I just adore the story of how Pavlova began as a dancer. The daughter of a Moscow shopkeeper, her early ballet training began with rigorous daily sessions in her living room, which I’m sure even today inspires people from all over the world! But don't worry, I'm sure Anna Pavlova would have approved of my more relaxed approach - we can still achieve amazing things, but sometimes it's nice to have a cuppa and a good chinwag, too!
Fashion & Fancy
While 1936 was full of stunning ballet productions, it wasn’t just about the on-stage spectacle. Ballet fashion was undergoing its own evolution. The early to mid-twentieth century saw the rise of modern dancers like Martha Graham, whose revolutionary work embraced simpler costumes, moving away from the opulent, billowing tutus of the past. But never fear! I'm sure Pavlova would still have been a big fan of her beautiful traditional tutu and would approve of the glamorous evening dresses worn at the theatre back then, often in vibrant silks, chiffons, and satins, adding even more drama and enchantment to those fabulous ballets.
Dancing into December
12th December is just the start of the dance season. It’s always magical to see all the people heading off to theatres around the world, eagerly anticipating the curtain rising to reveal beautiful scenes and graceful performances. I can just picture myself twirling amidst the bustling crowds, maybe catching a glimpse of someone’s dazzlingly decorated Christmas tree in a shop window - I love this time of year! It’s so exciting and festive. Speaking of dazzling, the Bolshoi Ballet’s 'The Nutcracker' opened its annual run in Moscow around this time, wouldn’t it be divine to attend! Perhaps we can find our way there next time!
Magic Meg's Pink Sparkle
You might be wondering how I fit my ballerina dress and a rucksack overflowing with ballet stories into the past! My trusty steed, Magic Meg, takes care of all that. My oh my, is she a magnificent creature, a pure-blood pink shimmering Shire with a snow-white mane and tail and hooves gleaming with golden shimmer. Meg wouldn't even bat an eyelid at a few more kilos! She loves to munch on sugar cubes and even gets excited when I pack her hooves with lavender before we go for a spin. Don't tell the horse whisperers, but sometimes, we have a little waltz together, but that's a story for another day.
A Message to You All
You know, there's so much history we haven't even scratched the surface of. This time, we’ve just peeked in at the year 1936. So remember, dear friends, if you have a dream of dancing, grab your pink tutu, get up on your tippy toes, and keep on twirling.
See you next month for another exciting ballet time-travel adventure! Don’t forget, check out my ballet performances, available on my website. You’ll be enchanted, darling!
Your friend in pink tutus and time travel,
