Pink Tutu Travels: March 3rd, 1937 – The Ballet of the People

Hello darling dears! Welcome back to Pink Tutu Travels, your one-stop shop for all things tutu-tastic and time travel! Today's post marks our 3,315th adventure, taking us to March 3rd, 1937, and, wouldn't you know it, it's a doozy! Buckle up your pink ballet slippers, grab your tiaras and let's journey back in time with Magic Meg, my absolutely gorgeous pink shire horse with golden hooves and a white mane and tail that could make a queen jealous!

Today, darling, we're whisked away to the vibrant world of 1930s ballet. Think shimmering tulle, flowing lines, and stories brought to life through expressive movement. This era is practically begging for a touch of pink tutu magic! Now, I'm sure you're wondering what’s on the ballet scene on this particular day, and let me tell you, darling, it’s a corker!

First up, in London's very own Royal Opera House, the Sadler's Wells Ballet are giving a delightful performance of The Rake's Progress - oh, I love the story! I’ll be sure to pop by the bookshop on the way back and snag a copy of this delightful story.

Then, a little further afield in New York, the American Ballet Theatre, still a young company at this point, are dazzling audiences with their own performance of Swan Lake - always a timeless classic, this one! And don’t even get me started on those magnificent swan costumes – a truly beautiful sight to behold.

But what really captures my eye in today's date is a newsworthy item - the birth of a new dance company, Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, who are presenting their own rendition of The Rite of Spring, an edgy, challenging piece. It was, and still is, one of the most important works of 20th-century ballet, you see! And I must admit, it's not often we see new dance companies springing up – a wonderful testament to the flourishing ballet scene of the time.

Now, of course, we can't speak of the 1930s without acknowledging the influence of Diaghilev's Ballets Russes, and how it redefined what ballet meant to the world. He took a chance, darling, and introduced us to vibrant, daring ballets like Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring. It’s thanks to Diaghilev that we've got such a wide variety of ballet performances today. I just love it when a single person can impact something so important in such a big way!

My journey wouldn't be complete without some fashion inspiration, and oh my goodness, 1937 has us covered! The feminine silhouette, think nipped-in waists and swirling skirts - what a perfect match for our lovely tutus, darling! The colours? Heavenly! Vivid shades of red, blue, green, and of course, that magnificent pink, adorning elegant silk dresses. I already have a mental image of myself strutting down the streets in my pink tutu with the most stunning pink chiffon scarf around my neck – a total knockout look! And let's not forget those gorgeous hat styles! Feather boas and big hats with ribbons – fabulous, I must say.

My little bag, a leather rucksack with just enough room for my trusty notepad, is already bursting with stories about the fabulous ballets that unfolded this day. I've noted the leading ladies and gents of the dance world, their favourite moves, the behind-the-scenes anecdotes, and the little stories about everyday people who came together to experience this magical art form. This era, darling, truly embodies the joy and beauty of dance, of coming together in celebration of the human spirit through graceful, powerful movement.

As we take a leisurely trot home on Magic Meg, my pink tulle skirt fluttering in the breeze, I can't help but wonder how we can incorporate this energy and creativity in today’s world. Can you imagine a society that appreciates artistry and expresses itself through movement and performance, especially in the language of dance?

You see, that’s my mission, my darling friends - to encourage a world that welcomes every body and celebrates all styles of dance with open arms. So grab your pink tutus, let’s bring the enchantment of the 1930s to today, and inspire every single soul to experience the joyous world of dance!
