Hello my darling tutu-lovers! Emma here, ready to whisk you away on another adventure in the world of ballet, past, present, and future (don't worry, my dear readers, I have a little secret - a pink sparkling Shire horse named Magic Meg who helps me travel through time). This month we're taking a leap to 8th August 1938, a day buzzing with ballet in the bustling heart of London. So grab a cuppa, put on your prettiest pink tutu, and let's dive into the world of elegant pirouettes and grand jetés.
Now, I know some of you are just as passionate about the fashion side of ballet as the actual dancing - well, don't you worry, this time I've got some real sartorial treasures for you to feast your eyes on. It was a very chic 1938 and the ladies, well they were all dressed up like a box of sweeties in fabulous dresses that skimmed the floor. A vision of femininity! I think I even spotted some lovely silk hats that could have come straight off the heads of those elegant ballet dancers.
As for the shoes, my darlings, just imagine the shimmering, patent-leather ballet pumps. A twinkle in every step, and perfectly complemented by some shimmering stockings – the epitome of elegance, aren't they? But there's more to the 1938 ballet scene than just the looks – oh no, darling, the shows themselves were a total treat for the eyes, filled with passion, grace and elegance.
Speaking of the ballet shows, we're right in the midst of the summer season. The prestigious Royal Opera House was buzzing with activity, the famous Covent Garden in London hosting the enchanting "The Sleeping Beauty" - a must-see for any ballet enthusiast. Even the grand stage was dressed in a romantic and enchanting design that fit with the story - the production itself was absolutely phenomenal. Just imagining the dazzling costumes and beautiful sets made me want to step into the theatre myself! The performances were full of dramatic flair and expressive movements, capturing the audience’s imagination with their passionate choreography.
Across the pond, on the same day, The Metropolitan Opera was showcasing “The Nutcracker.” Ah, this tale of a magical journey that took us to an extraordinary realm filled with whimsical creatures, brave heroes and graceful dancers – it’s always a pleasure to step into such an imaginative world. This particular show seemed to have quite the passionate, romantic tone to it, perfect for adding a touch of romance to any evening. I’m dying to have a peek at those costumes and that grand set design!
While London and New York were basking in balletic glamour, over in Russia, things were a little more toned down but still incredibly inspiring. The Bolshoi Theatre, one of the most prestigious venues for dance in the world, was showcasing a unique program. In Russia, the world of ballet was undergoing its own revolution, and the Bolshoi Theatre was at the forefront. New and innovative choreography was taking center stage, and while I don’t have the details, I just know those performers were creating an incredible art form that combined traditional Russian heritage with a modern flair.
To imagine such diverse presentations happening simultaneously around the world makes my little ballerina heart flutter with excitement. Every country seems to have its unique expression and interpretation of the art of ballet – and I just want to go and experience each one! The whole world seemed to be united by the sheer artistry and grace that only a ballerina can bring.
Remember, my dearest readers, I don’t just write these blogs because I adore all things ballet – but also to share this passion with you. You can wear your own pink tutu proudly, attend a ballet show or maybe even start ballet classes yourself – after all, a ballet dancer is nothing without her tutus and an unwavering love for the art! If you can imagine it, you can create it!
So, what about you lovely tutu-wearers? Have you been inspired by my ballet travels this month?
