#BalletHistory during 1940 12 December

Ballet Time Travel Blog: Post 3360 - December 12th 1940: A Time-Travelling Tutu & a Pink-Filled Blitz! 🩰✨

Hello fellow ballet lovers! It’s Emma here, your friendly neighbourhood pink tutu enthusiast, ready to take you on another dazzling dance through time! This month we’re twirling back to December 12th 1940.

Yes, you read that right. We’re going back to a world gripped by war! wartime Britain, to be precise. But even amidst the chaos and the blackout, ballet was a beacon of light and hope! As I leaped off Magic Meg, my dazzling pink Shire horse, and dusted off my tulle, a strange combination of warmth and melancholy swept over me.

Imagine my surprise to see bustling crowds and, most importantly, dancing people amidst all the bomb shelters and rationing queues. This really proves ballet is more than just a dance form, it’s an escape, an art form that can captivate even in the most trying times!

And guess what I found out? This particular December 12th, was a thrilling day for ballet! Across the world, from London to New York, the stage was set for some truly remarkable events. Let’s take a peek at my rucksack, brimming with memories of this extraordinary day.

First Stop: The London Coliseum - Where Ballet is Undeterred!

Amidst the gloom of wartime Britain, the London Coliseum stood tall and majestic! Stepping into the theatre felt like entering another world altogether. It’s so inspiring, how an art form can transcend any external difficulties, shining with hope in times of darkness.

You wouldn't believe it, but that very evening, The Royal Opera House was staging a special "Blitz Night" ballet performance! The crowd was electrified by the sight of the esteemed Markova and Dolin, a duo that has become legendary in the ballet world!

My rucksack is positively bursting with this magic! The vibrant colours of the dancers’ costumes amidst the dimly lit wartime theatre sparkled like a constellation! A powerful statement of artistic resilience!

This event was no small feat! Even during air raids, with bombs falling all around, Londoners would flock to the theatre, clinging to the magic and beauty of dance as a ray of hope and resilience. A reminder that even in the bleakest moments, art has the power to unite and inspire.

Second Stop: America's Ballet Dream Takes Shape

From London, Magic Meg whisked me straight to America! It seems America was equally mesmerised by ballet's beauty. December 12th 1940, saw a crucial ballet event unfold in the United States: The official opening of the American Ballet Theatre (ABT) !

Wow! From a mere seed of an idea a few years earlier, the ABT grew to become an epicentre of American ballet ! Imagine the excitement as dancers gathered in their grand costumes, and a wave of anticipation swept across the theatre.

Imagine me there, in my pink tutu, a touch of playful flamboyance amongst the grandeur. A sense of joy radiated through the room! This new venture held a boundless promise, as American dancers strived to carve their own niche in ballet's history.

This was more than just a show. It was the blossoming of a whole ballet culture! I found so much in my rucksack about this: sketches of the dancers’ costumes, the thrilling buzz of the premiere, and the unwavering determination in the eyes of everyone involved. A dream come true, a dedication to the art that would later be remembered in the world of ballet.

Third Stop: Back Home to a Local Ballet Gem in Derbyshire

Magic Meg, as always, transported me safely back to the comforting familiarity of my home in Derbyshire!

But just because I am in the heartland of the English countryside doesn't mean we have no local ballet magic! And I had a little secret tucked away in my rucksack – a news clipping, a local newspaper article from the Derbyshire Evening Telegraph on that day!

Yes, even back in 1940, our little corner of Derbyshire embraced ballet! "Local girls to join ballet school!" the headline declared!

A charming little dance academy in Derby was preparing for a spectacular recital by the local talent! This article showed how ballet found its place even in small communities, with young girls dreaming big on local stages!

What a joy! It reminds me of the importance of nurturing talent at any age, in any place. I've seen it so many times in my ballet time-travel adventures: the spark in the eyes of aspiring dancers! And my own little piece of this journey has been about nurturing those dreams.

Finding Our Way in the Glittery World of 1940

But you can’t always talk about ballet in its glory without facing reality.

Yes, even amidst this dazzling balletic spectacle on December 12th 1940, the world faced dark challenges. The Second World War loomed large. The air was filled with the unsettling thrum of planes and the sirens wailed, reminding everyone of the constant danger.

You'd be surprised how even in this challenging context, the fashion scene retained its flourish. The silhouettes of dresses were inspired by ballet itself - flowy and graceful. And guess what else? Pink was a popular color even during the war! It was a color of optimism, reminding people that life continues to shine!

Walking down the street, I was fascinated by the juxtaposition of a ballerina’s tutu with a soldier’s uniform! It highlighted a dichotomy: beauty and hardship, grace and chaos, all intertwining. It truly encapsulates the era's complex nature!

The Tutu Travels Back to the Future, Brimming with History!

It’s amazing to think how much history unfolded in one day! That 12th of December in 1940 was an epic ballet journey: the grit of war, the magic of the stage, and the enduring power of a community that found hope in dance.

This is a day to cherish - it speaks volumes about how ballet transcends even the toughest times, remaining a beacon of hope and artistic brilliance. And as I pack away my memories in my rucksack, ready to travel onwards, I can’t help but wonder what our next time-travel destination will hold. One thing is for certain: every new chapter promises to be filled with grace and grandeur, a little dash of pink, and a lot of twirling!

Until next time, happy dancing!
