Ballet Time Travels: A February Frolic! 🩰💖

Hello my lovely lovelies! Welcome to my monthly jaunt into ballet history! It's Emma here, from the heart of Derbyshire, and today I'm thrilled to share with you the extraordinary journey I took to February 2nd, 1943, a date that crackles with excitement in the world of ballet!

This month, my fabulous pink tutu has been twirling its way through a history adventure quite like no other. As you know, my trusty steed Magic Meg – a magnificent pink Shire horse with sparkling golden hooves and a flowing white mane and tail – is a wonder to behold. We galloped through time, our pinkness leaving a shimmering trail behind us.

A World of Ballet in 1943 🩰

This era, nestled within the throes of World War II, saw a spirit of resilience shine brightly, particularly within the world of ballet.

Despite the shadow of conflict, ballet remained a beacon of beauty, artistry, and escape. Dancers continued to perform, captivating audiences with their grace and athleticism.

This month's history jaunt saw me in the enchanting city of New York, the heart of the American ballet scene. As I hopped off Meg’s back, I couldn’t resist a little window shopping at Saks Fifth Avenue, where I spied stunning dance shoes for the very reasonable price of $6 a pair – what a steal! It was there I saw the beginnings of “The Seven Deadly Sins”, a ballet set to music by Kurt Weill, featuring the captivating ballerina, Alexandra Danilova, a truly divine performer!

I must admit, I was rather giddy with excitement at the sight of her. The ballet, performed by the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo under the direction of the visionary Leonide Massine, brought a vibrant and daring approach to choreography that truly captured the spirit of the era. The themes of seduction and morality within this work were fascinatingly presented, causing quite a stir at the time, which just shows the rebellious spirit of the times!

But New York isn’t the only ballet-lover’s paradise. Next, we found ourselves transported to the dazzling metropolis of London – a city teeming with a fervent passion for dance! In the midst of wartime blackout, the Royal Opera House was shining brighter than ever. There was a grand opening gala at Covent Garden where a new ballet by the young genius, Frederick Ashton, named “The Wise Virgins”, premiered. It’s a testament to human creativity and the strength of the ballet spirit!

The ballet scene was brimming with talent and energy during those turbulent years! I made a point of soaking in the creative energy of this period and filled my trusty rucksack with notes, sketches, and tales of these amazing dancers and choreographers, so I can share them with you all.

The Enchanting History of Ballet

History isn't just about grand dates and names – it's about the stories that lie within! There’s such magic and wonder in ballet history and its stories are waiting to be explored, my lovelies! Each journey fills my heart with an appreciation for the rich tapestry of ballet’s legacy. The resilient spirit of dancers and audiences throughout history continues to inspire me, reminding me that ballet is truly a universal language.

While we’re on the topic of resilience, we can’t forget my beloved pink tutus! Now, you lovely lovelies might wonder, how do I even travel with my pink tutus?
