Pink Tutu Travels: A Ballet Blitz Through 10th October, 1945! (Post #3418)

Hello, my darlings! Welcome back to the www.pink-tutu.com! This month we’re going right back to the end of World War II, just a couple of months after VE Day! Can you imagine being in a world where everyone was buzzing with the news that the war was finally over? Oh, it must have been absolutely electric! And guess what? The dance world was just as exciting!

This is the latest stop in my travels, dear readers, I’m on my pink sparkly Shires’s Magic Meg's back right now in my dazzling pink tutu, travelling to all corners of the globe through the years, and we're all just getting started with October 10th, 1945! Just you wait, I'm about to blow your minds with everything that's going on in the world of ballet today...

Let’s have a little think about where our ballet superstars would be, then! Just as London had been a war-torn wasteland just a year before, I'm sure the rest of the world had also experienced some tough times, but there was so much new hope blossoming for dancers and the performing arts as well! There was a surge of passion and creativity and people were longing to celebrate after such a tough war, so everyone was absolutely pouring into the theatres and dancing until their heart’s content! Just like a bunch of my favourite ballet stars from history. Can you believe that the Ballet Russes even started on a grand, European tour the month before, even though this legendary company was already more than 30 years old! The Russian dancers, they certainly have their passion for dance, I can tell you!

So, can we imagine just what those legendary ballerinas of 1945 would have worn?! Just let’s have a think… I would be so tempted to throw on some sparkling diamante headbands and glittering mesh tutus! Then let's add in a pair of chic red platform shoes – oh my goodness, such a sophisticated, post-war statement! I'm absolutely drooling over this look and dreaming of being there with them!

Anyway, it's just so inspiring! To know that just like dancers, all across the world are back in the studio and back in the theatre. It shows just how much ballet really can bring everyone together. You see, we can travel through time together, all over the globe – on horseback, of course!– all sharing our passion for this elegant art. So you see, you can wear pink tutus wherever you are and whenever you like because pink tutus are like time machines! They take us all to the time period of our choice. What are we waiting for, I ask you, because pink is always a perfect shade for fashioning your future!

But it's time for my shopping spree! The famous New York department stores had an array of fabulous dancing gear! We're talking about shimmering silks and tulles, sparkly ballet shoes! I think my rucksack can hold just a bit more. Just a few little mementos, my darling friends, but then it’s off to the Metropolitan Opera House, in New York city! That was where this gorgeous, historic ballet and opera venue reopened after it's wartime shutdown!

Of course, we have a fantastic opera on our schedule to enjoy at the Met - this was actually the start of their 1945-1946 opera season with a really great staging of Puccini’s famous ā€œLa BohĆØmeā€. Imagine seeing all that action and all those fabulous outfits, just like they would have in the theatre! I can’t resist a little extra sparkle. I think the Met, in my pink tutu, would just be divine! Imagine me, walking up those gorgeous stairs, surrounded by glamour and glitter, and maybe even catching a glimpse of one of the most legendary dancers of the day! Just like those glittering jewels on the costumes and stage props – dazzling and beautiful!

Now, on this side of the world, London is booming again with shows as well! And wouldn’t you know it, one of London's most spectacular ballet theatres – The Royal Opera House at Covent Garden – just a stone’s throw from where I’m standing now – had their brand new ballet company start their season at the end of September with a fantastic performance of "Sleeping Beautyā€! I do love a fairytale. So you can just imagine – just 7 weeks before I’m standing here on Magic Meg! That’s right my darlings, in September, it’s so glamorous, because it’s the first show of a brand new era of British ballet, all about giving London that much needed hope again after a turbulent era. Such exciting things happen on 10th October, and we're still in for the big finale, because one of my absolute favorite shows – a dance extravaganza that never seems to be out of fashion, right in London – oh how it tickles my heart to see a famous London musical right in the heart of the city. Well, this time in 1945, my favourite was, Oklahoma, now on the boards for its 2,000th show.

Can we imagine for a moment, what the musicals were like all that time ago! All those glittering costumes, the energy and movement in the musicals as the dancing performers give it their all! The passion that’s expressed! So many fabulous performances were just waiting to inspire every performer on stage!

That was how all the stars got together, dancing their hearts out in every show, but for the moment we can say a final thank you and a farewell for today. My pink tutu, and my trusty pink sparkle steed Magic Meg, have got to take us to our next dance performance... a new and fabulous journey and all that fabulous fashion from days gone by will have to wait for next time. Until next time then, remember the magic of pink tutus, and my dear, sweet friends, never forget, the best place to be is, in a pink tutu!
