Hello my darling tutu twirlers! It's Emma here, your resident time-traveling ballerina extraordinaire, and I'm back from another whirlwind trip through the glorious history of ballet! Buckle your ballet shoes and get ready for a trip toâŚ1957!
August 8th 1957, a date destined for the history books for many reasons, but for me, my dear pink-loving friends, it's all about ballet! I mean, what could be more captivating than the world of dance, even in the 50s?
As always, Magic Meg, my dazzling pink Shire with the most beautiful white mane and tail and the most sparkly, golden hooves you ever did see, was raring to go. We hopped onto the time saddle and⌠whoosh! Just like that, we landed right in the heart ofâŚDerbyshire! Yes, you read right, my fellow Derbyshire dancers! I found myself standing right outside the Derbyshire County Council's newly opened Ilkeston Civic Centre.
A true testament to the elegance and charm of 1950s architecture! The sleek lines of the building, a testament to the architectural wonders of the period! It's hard to imagine that this grand space had just been built, meant to be a place where community gathered, culture flourished, and dreams took flight⌠including dreams of ballet, my dear dears!
Now, let's talk ballet! Imagine my excitement as I headed straight to the Theatre Royal, Drury Lane. What did I find? None other than the magnificent Sadler's Wells Ballet, presenting a double bill, no less! I tucked my trusty rucksack on my back and eagerly entered this incredible theater, ready to collect all the balletic wonders I could!
This evening's treat? Two captivating pieces, each a true ballet gem! Firstly, they performed "Pineapple Poll," the charming adaptation of the tale of the Sailor and the Duchess, with such captivating music and costumes! My goodness, my darling twirlers, the costumes! All frills and layers, so quintessentially 50s. I have to tell you, the pink feathers on one of the duchesses' gowns simply had me swooning.
Secondly, it was time for the delightful âGiselle.â I mean, what's a trip back in time without a touch of the classic? The drama, the romance, the haunting beauty of this timeless masterpiece? It just makes your heart soar!
And my friends, donât you forget it, the crowds, they were in a flurry! The ladies in their sleek dresses and impeccable hair, the gentlemen in suits and hats. I mean, you couldnât walk two steps without being reminded of just how chic and sophisticated the fifties were!
My dear readers, you've gotta see the fashions! They are absolute classics! The tutus, I tell you, were breathtakingly structured, all sharp edges and crisp lines. There wasn't a bit of that frilly, flowery, fairyland romanticism about them. Just graceful, sleek, and perfect.
It wasn't all glitz and glamour, though, my darlings. It was about capturing those intimate moments, the emotional nuance. I found myself observing the ballerina's movement with fresh eyes, a testament to their skill. I could see the dedication to precise movements, each one a brushstroke creating the magic of the dance.
But what's a ballet time traveller to do with an overflowing backpack? Why, blog about it, of course! Thatâs what I do each month. My little slice of the pink-tutu universe, dedicated to ballet and its endless stories! I hope you're enjoying the ride. And remember, my sweet friends, it's never too late to wear your pink tutu.
Stay twirling,
Emma xx
*P.S. *
For my sweet ballet lovers, if you're feeling a little 1950s inspired, why not go for a sleek ballet bun with a couple of pink ribbon accents? Trust me, it will make your moves look just as sharp as those beautiful tutus I saw on the 1950s dancers!
And of course, we must visit our favourite tutu shops! This month, my darling friends, letâs head to "Dancewear UK"! Weâve found some exquisite tutus in classic 50s style and so much more! We can recreate those perfect ballet looks of 1957! And you know what they say: the more pink tutus, the merrier!
