Pink Tutu Time Travel: 1st January 1959 - A Ballet Bonanza!

Welcome back to Pink-Tutu.com, dear readers! It's Emma here, your resident pink-loving ballerina time traveller. This month, I'm taking us right back to 1st January 1959, a date bursting with ballet brilliance! And as always, I'm sporting my signature pink tutu – because what's a ballet journey without a little sparkle, eh?

My trusty steed, Magic Meg – a shire horse with a pink shimmer, golden hooves and a flowing mane and tail like spun silk – is already whinnying impatiently. This time, we're headed for London! There's so much happening in the world of ballet today that my rucksack is brimming with excitement!

London Calling!

Landing right in the heart of the West End, I could feel the buzz of the city. Just a quick glance at the theatre listings and my eyes lit up! The Royal Ballet was premiering "Giselle", with Margot Fonteyn – one of the greatest ballerinas of all time! – taking the stage as the ethereal Giselle. This is one performance I won't miss. I've read so much about Margot and she just seems so graceful and powerful. I can almost imagine the gasp of the audience as she flits across the stage!

And wait, what's this? At the Sadler's Wells Theatre, the newly established Royal Ballet School is celebrating the start of the year with a dazzling showcase of young talent! Oh, the joy of seeing those fledgling ballerinas take flight!

Now, the fashion for ballet today is truly delightful! We're talking a delicate balance of tradition and contemporary. I even managed to snag a gorgeous, pale pink satin tutu at the renowned "La Belle Epoque" boutique, just for this occasion!

But I don't want to miss out on what the rest of the world is enjoying. After all, ballet is a global dance!

Around The Globe

From London, we flew to Moscow to see what the Bolshoi Ballet was up to. It's all about the classics today – “Swan Lake” is taking the stage, and the famous Bolshoi corps de ballet is giving an absolute masterclass in elegance and precision.

Across the pond in New York, the New York City Ballet is offering a different take on ballet, a "Balanchine Bonanza!" Yes, a whole program of ballets by George Balanchine, the legendary choreographer who is forever changing the world of ballet! He was truly revolutionary – imagine ballet that incorporated the rhythms of jazz and modern dance. He was so clever. It's exciting just to be here on the brink of his groundbreaking career!

And finally, we journeyed back to Paris. It’s a must for any ballet-loving adventurer, especially this time of year! The Palais Garnier – that stunningly opulent opera house! – is hosting "La Bayadère," with a showstopping debut of the gorgeous Sylvie Guillem! I must say, it is such an honour to be witnessing the first stages of this future ballet star’s career. Just imagining how her legend will grow…

This trip has truly been a whirlwind! My backpack is brimming with ticket stubs, programs, and even a few sketches from the dazzling costumes. There are so many stories to tell. But, before I disappear again in the swirling petticoats of my pink tutu, I leave you with a few tidbits of inspiration to fuel your own ballet passion.

Pink Tutu Tip
  • Start with ballet – it's never too late! No matter your age, ballet can teach you grace, discipline, and artistry.
  • Seek out new experiences – whether it’s a ballet school or a grand performance, ballet is full of exciting things to discover.
  • Get creative – I’ve found that exploring dance styles from different parts of the world, just like I did on this trip, helps inspire me!

That's all from me, darlings. Join me next month as I head to Paris for a day full of vintage couture and balletic wonder!

Until then, remember… it’s always a good day for a pink tutu!
