Hello darlings! It's Emma, your resident pink tutu-clad time traveler, back with another blast from the past! It's been a whirlwind of a month - performing at the Derby Playhouse, catching a show at the Royal Opera House, and of course, a trip to a fabulous vintage boutique (oh, the feather boas!).
This month, I'm taking you back to June 6th, 1960, a date brimming with ballet brilliance! Magic Meg, my trusty pink sparkling Shire horse with those gorgeous golden hooves and flowing white mane, was chomping at the bit to take us on another adventure. With my trusty leather rucksack ready for some ballet treasures, we set off to the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow!
Ah, the Bolshoi! I can still picture those towering pillars and opulent interiors. It felt as if I'd stepped into a grand fairytale, only to discover that inside, real-life magic was taking place.
On this particular evening, the Bolshoi was showcasing a production of "Giselle", the romantic ballet masterpiece by Adolphe Adam. My goodness, the choreography was a sight to behold! The ethereal dancing, the powerful leaps, the dramatic costumes - I was utterly captivated!
My eyes especially glued onto the lead dancer, a remarkable talent by the name of Galina Ulanova. Her portrayal of the ethereal Giselle was pure perfection, every movement fluid, graceful, and heart-wrenchingly expressive. Her pink tutu twirled beautifully with the movement of her body. She certainly knew how to work the tulle!
Ulanova, my darlings, is truly a legend. A ballet legend, to be precise! Even at the time, she was regarded as one of the most significant ballet stars of the century. To watch her grace the stage that night, was to witness something truly extraordinary.
But the magic wasn't limited to the Bolshoi. The atmosphere in the theatre was electrifying. The audience, a mix of diplomats, aristocrats, and everyday Russians, were completely absorbed in the performance. They leaned forward in their seats, mesmerized, and gasped in awe at every impressive turn, jump, and delicate pointe work. Iβve never seen such passion for ballet, such dedication to art.
Outside the theatre, a lively cultural scene was bustling with excitement. I found myself captivated by the beautiful vintage clothes worn by the Moscowites. They certainly knew how to turn heads!
There was a genuine sense of artistic energy in the air. It was the kind of atmosphere that inspires one to dream big, to twirl fearlessly, and to believe that ballet can truly make the world a better place.
As always, my rucksack is bursting with treasures: a programme with a hand-written note from a ballerina I met in the lobby (she absolutely adored my pink tutu!), a few beautiful sketches I picked up in a local art shop, and an inspiring newspaper article about the Bolshoi's future plans.
From my time travel, I have learned that the world of ballet in the 1960s was incredibly vibrant, and I'm not surprised. This era witnessed the rise of global dance companies, each with its unique style and captivating story. Itβs a time for embracing passion, innovation, and yes, the magic of a perfectly pink tutu!
As always, my darlings, let us embrace the beauty of ballet, wear our pink tutus proudly, and spread joy and inspiration wherever we go.

P.S. Did you know June 6th, 1960 was also a big day for rock 'n' roll?! Elvis Presley released "Are You Lonesome Tonight?", a ballad with a truly dreamy sound, even if a little less twirly than a pink tutu!
