Post #3625: A Whirl Through 1963 - Pink Tutus in the Swinging Sixties!

Hello darlings! It's Emma here, your resident Pink Tutu time traveller, back with another thrilling journey into the past. This month, we're shimmying back to January 1st, 1963, a time when the world was just starting to get groovy, the Beatles were rising to fame, and the dance scene was undergoing a delightful revolution.

As usual, my faithful steed, Magic Meg – a vision of pink sparkle with golden hooves and a mane like spun moonlight – was eager to whisk me away. This time, I packed my leather rucksack with extra space, as you can imagine, a time of cultural upheaval would likely yield some truly fabulous ballet finds!

A Blast from the Past: A Swinging Ballet World

Arriving in 1963, the first thing I noticed was the energy – a real buzz in the air! Everyone seemed to be moving a little faster, wearing bolder colours, and of course, the music, oh my, what a symphony of excitement!

London's Covent Garden was the place to be for ballet lovers. Margot Fonteyn, the Queen of Ballet herself, was captivating audiences, whilst the young and vivacious Rudolf Nureyev, fresh from a dazzling debut, was causing quite a stir. But, it wasn’t just about the traditional styles – ballet was shaking things up with new interpretations and innovative techniques.

Imagine my delight when I stumbled upon a performance of "La Sylphide," at Sadler's Wells Theatre! The swirling skirts, the delicate leaps, it was simply enchanting. Later that evening, I took a peek into a rehearsal studio. The choreography was mesmerising, the dancers, filled with passion and commitment. I could feel a new kind of energy flowing through the room – it was captivating! I even saw a ballet student attempting a tour* en l’air* that took my breath away – and made me yearn to add a pink-tutu clad dancer from this time to my ballet item collection!

Of course, no journey to 1963 is complete without a spot of shopping! I found a stunning pink silk scarf that would make any ballet dancer feel absolutely divine. I tucked it safely away in my rucksack, it will be a perfect gift for my dearest cousin Penelope, whose collection of pink accessories needs an upgrade!

The "Ballet" of Life - Finding My Groove

One of the things I love most about time travel is discovering the things that make a time period unique, and this time, the swinging sixties did not disappoint! I spent an afternoon with a young lady who introduced me to the dance scene of the day. It wasn’t just about ballets in theaters - there were ballroom dances like the twist and the frug, rock and roll, and even "The Balleteen", which, believe it or not, was a kind of pop ballet sensation!

In the evening, I made my way to a stylish restaurant near Piccadilly, where I bumped into a fascinating couple. They were both dressed to the nines, with sharp suits and chic dresses. They talked about modern ballet in America - George Balanchine, Jerome Robbins, they spoke in hushed tones like these were gods of dance! I gathered a notebook full of ballet history snippets from their exciting anecdotes. The lady was a ballet enthusiast and even let me touch her shimmering green evening dress, it felt soft like moonlight and would certainly have looked sensational under stage lights.

Sharing the Pink Tutu Love

You know how much I love pink, and this trip was like a feast for my eyes. The bold, vibrant colours of the sixties had me reaching for my notebook to scribble down ideas for my next Pink Tutu ensemble. And it wasn't just fashion – even the food felt like a pink tutu! From cherry-topped milkshakes to bubblegum ice cream, it was all so delightful.

Oh, I'm getting a bit carried away - but truly, the 1960s were a time of playful and rebellious style, and of course, the perfect time for my beloved pink tutus! Imagine a troupe of pink tutu clad dancers dancing the "Twist" to a funky Beatles beat - I must find a way to incorporate that into one of my time travel shows! I’ve a feeling I would be bringing some serious 1963 “Ballet Fever” to the 21st Century!

As the sun dipped low over London, it was time for Magic Meg to carry me home. Back in my Derbyshire cottage, I carefully unpack my treasures – a stack of colourful magazines full of ballet-related snippets, an exquisitely drawn vintage poster, a pink feather boa - and of course, a bagful of sweet treats! But even with all these delightful keepsakes, I know the best souvenirs from my journeys are the stories – the conversations, the dances, the joy I witness along the way.

My dears, my pink-tutu-loving followers, the world of ballet is constantly evolving, with stories and dancers from every time period waiting to be discovered! It's a truly wonderful, magical journey – and I'm so happy to share it all with you. Remember, whether it’s on stage, on the street, or even in a distant past, the love of ballet knows no boundaries! So keep on dancing, keep on dreaming, and above all, keep your tutus pink!

Until next month!

Emma
