Hello my darling ballet bunnies! It's your favourite pink tutu-wearing time traveller, Emma, here with another exciting jaunt through the wonderful world of ballet history! Today, my beautiful Meg whisked us back to the 9th of September, 1963, and what a fabulous time it was!
Oh, did I forget to mention? Magic Meg, my magnificent time-travelling steed, is a stunning shire horse, all pink shimmer and sparkling gold hooves with a flowing mane and tail like a cloud of spun white sugar. We look quite the pair, wouldn't you say?
So, this September 9th in 1963, we arrived in a world of fantastic fashions. Think vibrant colours, swirling skirts, and stylish headwear! This was the era of Twiggy, and London was pulsating with fashion! Even the men were sporting a little bit of flair - with sharp suits and dapper accessories. And believe me, we looked the part! My tutu was a blush pink delight, adorned with a beautiful spray of pearls. As we trooped down a bustling London street, the fashion of the day, coupled with the vision of a tutu-clad me and the extraordinary Magic Meg, created a whirlwind of amazed gazes and delighted smiles!
The excitement wasn't just on the streets! At The Royal Opera House, the legendary Bolshoi Ballet was dazzling audiences with their performance of "Spartacus". This was the world-famous Yuri Grigorovich’s choreography, and it was just absolutely breathtaking.
I had to snag some ballet memorabilia from this epic performance! Can you imagine? Imagine all the fascinating ballet tales it would tell when tucked away in my trusty leather rucksack! Oh, what a glorious addition to my ballet story collection. Every piece has its own history, and its own charm, and its own little tale to tell!
Now, let me tell you, the Bolshoi performance was not the only thing turning heads that night! There was a remarkable dance called “The Rite of Spring” by a renowned group called “Ballet Rambert”, just over in London! Can you imagine, it featured a truly phenomenal choreographer - the very talented, innovative and iconic Kenneth MacMillan. And wouldn't you just love a peek at his early works? You can see why his work had a real and powerful influence on modern dance! And even in the world of film, dance was making waves, with "The V.I.P.s", featuring the stunning Cyd Charisse as the star performer. Talk about a triple threat! It was a night for the arts, from theatre to film to ballet!
Back in my own time, we don't quite match the excitement of London in the 60's - I miss those dazzling colours, especially those bold primary shades! You know, in my heart, I really think this era, those outfits and those daring designs, that whole era, were absolutely perfect for pink tutus. I can see myself being part of the fashion scene, with a magnificent and shimmering pink tutu, gracing the streets of swinging London. Perhaps a little too much for the time? Well, I think it would be amazing!
Speaking of amazing, I saw a fabulous ballet show back home this week! "La Sylphide" was exquisite! You could feel the passion in each dancer's every move! Just wonderful!
However, I've just been doing a bit of research... you know me, always diving into the archives! Seems a lot of my inspiration stems from a similar time period, in the era of Diaghilev. So much innovation, with ballet going through some tremendous changes, new ideas... almost a revolution in the world of ballet! It truly resonates with me!
But right now, we've got to talk fashion! You just know how much I love a shopping spree, and believe me, London in 1963 is definitely where to go. Think bright colour schemes - oranges, blues, greens - everything is loud, bold, and fabulous! Think miniskirts and geometric patterns and I'm in my element! There were fabulous department stores filled with some seriously fantastic outfits, but nothing screams timeless glamour more than a pink tutu!
I hope you all had a wonderful week filled with the grace and beauty of dance! Remember, my darlings, dance brings joy and a touch of magic to every day. And my dream, is for every woman to experience that joy, and what better way to do that than wearing a pink tutu? Let's fill the world with pink tutus, shall we? Don't forget to visit www.pink-tutu.com next month for the next exciting instalment of our time-traveling ballet adventure. Until then, keep on dancing!
Love, Emma xx
