Pink Tutu Time Travel Blog: Post #3636 - 12th December 1963: A Whirl Through History's Curtain!

Hello darlings! Emma here, your resident Pink Tutu Time Traveller, and it's December the 12th. Oh, how I adore December! It's the time of twinkling lights, steaming mugs of cocoa, and...well, Christmas ballet performances, of course! This month, however, my trusty steed Magic Meg whisked me back to the year 1963 - what a time to be a ballerina!

Imagine: you’re a young dancer, practicing your pliés under the watchful eye of the legendary Margot Fonteyn herself. Her graceful movements and expressive face would have sent shivers of awe down my spine!

That’s precisely where Magic Meg deposited me – right at the Royal Ballet in Covent Garden! I'd imagine, in the 60s, ballet performances were a touch less theatrical and more…well, elegant! I do love a bit of drama, don't you? But let me tell you, seeing such iconic figures grace the stage – Fonteyn, Nureyev, and even the one and only, Rudolf Nureyev – made my heart skip a beat!

Now, on this specific day in 1963, The Royal Ballet was staging ‘La Sylphide’ at the Royal Opera House – what a truly captivating spectacle. Imagine a romantic ballet about a love triangle set against a stunning Scottish backdrop! The beauty and drama of it all were practically begging for me to snatch up a few programmes and memorabilia, which I promptly stashed into my trusty pink leather rucksack for later analysis back in the present!

While Covent Garden buzzed with ballet excitement, across the pond, in the U.S., the world of ballet was experiencing its own fascinating transformation. It was an era of fresh, bold choreography and the rise of new dance companies like the New York City Ballet.

Oh! Did I mention the stunning fashion of the 60s? Think geometric designs, a-line silhouettes, and all things "mod"! From a pink polka-dot dress I spotted in a shop window to the dazzling outfits the audience sported – my mind was swirling with inspiration!

I swear, darling, every time travel is an absolute feast for my inner ballerina. The chance to witness history unfold – a blend of timeless artistry and captivating change - is an experience no amount of tea and ballet buns could ever replace.

And don't forget my dearest pink tutu lovers – this month's post is just a slight reminder to join me on a wonderful adventure into ballet's rich and dazzling past, present, and future.

If you are ever in London, you must visit The Royal Opera House. It is a beautiful building with such history behind it!

And as always, my dear readers, let's not forget the power of our own pink tutus to spark joy, inspire, and add a touch of whimsical elegance to the world. Remember, we are all ballerinas at heart!

This post is brought to you from a Derbyshire field, where I am currently admiring Magic Meg, as she eats her favourite, pink sugar cubes, which is my reward to her for all our ballet time travel adventures.

I will leave you with this - if you have a dream of travelling through time in a pink tutu, my dears, do not be afraid to take the plunge and let the magic of ballet sweep you off your feet!

Stay fabulous! Emma
