Hello, darlings! It’s Emma here, back from another whimsical ballet time-travel escapade! Today, we’re waltzing back to 3rd March, 1967, and trust me, you won't want to miss this enchanting trip. Let me just pop on my most delightful pink tutu (this one has a little bit of sparkly sequins around the hem, and yes, it’s the very one my dear granny wore in the 1930s!).
Let’s climb onto the back of Magic Meg (my pink-sparkling shire horse with the golden hooves, white mane and tail - what a fabulous steed!). As always, I've got my leather rucksack ready for all the exciting ballet treasures I'm about to find.
Ready? Off we gallop!
The Royal Ballet's SpringWe land, like a gentle pirouette, at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden. What’s going on today? Oh, what a joy! We’re here for the Royal Ballet’s opening of the Spring season! I’m just gushing with excitement! This is always one of the highlights of the ballet year, darling.
They’ve just premiered "La Fille Mal Gardée", which is apparently very well received. Now, Frederick Ashton is considered to be one of the best choreographers of our time, isn’t he? And who doesn’t love a good romp about a feisty girl trying to find love? The reviews are raving, talking about Margot Fonteyn's performance! I simply must catch that ballet sometime! It's not every day you see a dance this big, magnifique!
New York: A Symphony of StarsBut Covent Garden isn't the only place the dance is heating up. Let's hop over to New York, darlings! It seems there's another absolute must-see taking place at the New York State Theater . It’s "Giselle", performed by the New York City Ballet! Goodness me, you can never get enough "Giselle" and with Patricia McBride leading the way? I can’t even imagine the artistry. And the costumes are just divine, as you can imagine - soft tulle, whispers of lace - oh, sighs. I do love a ballet about a beautiful young woman and an ill-fated love affair. I have to tell you, that bit where she goes mad is quite unnerving! It gives me goosebumps just thinking about it.
Oh, and Natalia Makarova, quelle surprise! She's a rising star, apparently. I can’t wait to get my hands on the programme. All those beautiful poses, the flowing movements - I’m simply smitten.
Fashion in BloomAnd talking of beautiful things, just have a look at this exquisite Balenciaga dress I’m wearing! It's my special time-travel ensemble, all flowing fabrics in vibrant hues. But what a surprise, darling! My favourite colour, pink, is actually the en vogue shade right now. Pink! Can you believe it? The world is going mad for the colour. Pink dresses, pink shoes, even pink hair! It's as though everyone’s embracing my life-long love affair with this magical shade!
Paris - The Romance of DanceBut now it’s time to sashay back to Paris, because something magical is going on in the world of French Ballet. Let’s just trot along the cobblestones of Rue de la Paix (how lovely is that name?) and let the Parisian air waft through our hair as we enjoy a delightful moment of relaxation at the Théâtre National de l'Opéra de Paris.
What have we got? Oh, isn't it fantastic! It's Roland Petit in his dazzling "Carmen", which features that absolutely breathtaking "Pas de deux" with a dramatic Spanish feel. The emotion in every single move! I always find myself transfixed by those beautiful long, expressive arms. So beautiful!
The setting? Magnifique. Imagine this - the whole world of dance and art coming together. The beautiful designs of Carlu and Zizi Jeanmaire's costume, Jean Cocteau's spectacular mise-en-scène. My dear! This is pure artistry, just unfolding before your eyes! It's as if the dance is taking on a life of its own. It just captures your whole being!
And here's the absolute best part. Right now, they are performing it to a spectacular set designed by Pablo Picasso! Can you imagine this! He's the top artist at the moment, everyone’s talking about him, and Roland Petit, one of the best choreographers. This is true artistry.
It's a simply fantastic night in the world of ballet, isn't it? I just adore everything about this ballet season. It’s such a magical combination of grace, power, and of course, an entire explosion of gorgeous costumes!
*I'm just giddy thinking about all the fashion I’ve seen. Can you tell I’ve got a new pink tutu I simply *must have in my wardrobe? The life of a time-traveling ballerina isn’t easy but it certainly is exciting and rewarding!
I can’t wait to see what tomorrow will bring… perhaps another breathtaking Ballet in Paris, or a beautiful show in Vienna …?**

Until next time…
