Hello darlings! Welcome back to my little corner of the internet, where we twirl through time in our pinkest, most fabulous tutus. This month, Magic Meg, my magnificent pink-sparkling Shire with golden hooves, and I are taking a trip to a rather exciting date: 3rd March 1970. As ever, I've got my leather rucksack ready to collect a few historical treasures, a little bit of ballet magic and a whole lot of pink!
Now, you might be wondering, "What's so special about 3rd March 1970, Emma?" Well, my dears, it's a day brimming with ballet delights! Imagine the anticipation β we're practically stepping into the very year that saw the dazzling "Don Quixote" with Nureyev and Fonteyn! Just thinking about it has my tutu practically floating!
Before we embark on our time-traveling adventure, let's pop on our pink ballet slippers, have a cuppa and have a little gossip about what else was happening in the world of dance back then.
A Peek into the Ballet World of 1970
The year 1970 was bursting with balletic brilliance. Rudolf Nureyev, the legendary dancer, continued to enchant audiences worldwide, while the legendary Margot Fonteyn remained a cornerstone of the ballet scene.
There was also the incredibly talented Mikhail Baryshnikov on the rise! His brilliance and charisma were already making waves. I just love his style β such a charismatic presence on stage. We can't forget the dazzling Natalia Makarova, who made a dramatic return to the Soviet Union β oh, the thrill! Her talent and defiance certainly made headlines.
Now, on to our grand adventure!
My heart was already beating with excitement as we hopped on Magic Meg β you've never seen a horse move so elegantly in a pink, shimmering dressage outfit! Imagine it β weβre gliding through the clouds, and even the time machine feels a little sparkly thanks to Megβs hooves and tail. And let's be honest, I felt every inch the prima ballerina in my voluminous pink tulle tutu, which swirled around me like a pink dream!
As we reached our destination β the year 1970, March the 3rd to be exact! I was transported back to a different era, one filled with the magic of a bygone age. Oh, my, the excitement of stepping onto those cobbled streets β the scents of baking bread, the charming sound of the butcher's shop... The vintage car horns sounded oh-so-sophisticated and, well, letβs not forget, the glamour! Think elegant tailored suits for the men, A-line dresses for the ladies and those darling hats with the feather and veil. It truly felt like stepping onto the stage of a vintage play!
* Ballet Performance in a Time Capsule*
One of the things I most wanted to experience in 1970 was a ballet performance. With my tutu swirling around me, I snuck into a bustling theatre, heart pounding with anticipation! Imagine, this could be a performance I'd heard of, or perhaps a world premiere β the possibilities felt endless!
After all, the 1970s marked the height of the era of Balanchine, Ashton, and MacMillan β iconic names that would go down in ballet history, even influencing generations of dancers to this very day. Oh, those graceful movements, those powerful jumps, that exquisite choreography! I could see why ballet was considered a fine art form.
A Peek Into The Dressing Rooms of 1970
My love for history extends to fashion, so, as you can imagine, I had to find my way to the ballet school to have a little peek backstage, you know, just for a little peek. What I saw was absolutely glorious! There were the iconic pink satin slippers β not so sparkly like we have today, but I loved their classic design. And of course, we had those wonderful black tulle tutus, some of which were hand-stitched and adorned with jewels β a beautiful detail! Oh, how I dream of owning a piece from this time! I'd happily adorn my home with it. I could see those dancers rushing about, their energy just as palpable today as it was back then! It was so fascinating to observe this backstage ballet world, the quiet moments of concentration between the excitement and rush!
Fashion in 1970, Inspired by the World of Ballet
The fashion in 1970! It was so sleek, sophisticated, and in some ways, reminiscent of the ballet world! Those slim A-line skirts, paired with blouses that accentuated the graceful lines of a woman's figure. Even the colour palettes were influenced by the world of ballet - shades of pink, cream, and soft lavender were ubiquitous! Imagine those gorgeous lace blouses, so light and airy, they seemed to dance with every move. My darling Meg even found some fantastic fabric to add to my rucksack for a future design.
Pink Tutus in the Heart of Derbyshire
Our little journey to the 3rd of March 1970, filled me with more inspiration and knowledge than I could possibly have imagined. I'm going to carry the magic and fashion of that era right here into my Derbyshire home. As you know, I'm passionate about spreading the love for ballet β not only as an art form, but as a source of inspiration. After all, wouldn't it be fabulous if everyone had a little twirl in their heart, a splash of pink in their wardrobe? Perhaps I should have a "pink tutu day" here in Derbyshire... just imagine everyone dancing the day away!
As for my travels through time? Oh, there are many more adventures waiting just for the asking.
