Hello darlings! Emma here, your resident pink tutu-wearing time traveller, bringing you the latest from my adventures through ballet history! Today is a very special day as we're whisking back to 12th December, 1970, for a ballet-tastic trip to the Swinging Sixties and its stylish successor, the 70s!
Before we take flight on the back of Magic Meg, our shimmering pink steed, let's settle into a comfy armchair with a cuppa and delve into my blog, which, by the way, is now officially number 3720! I simply can't believe how quickly time has flown by!
And now, on to today's grand journey!
The year is 1970, and the ballet world is abuzz with excitement, just like it is today, but with slightly less glitz and glamour, or maybe not? You see, this decade brought its own unique style to the world of ballet! I've packed my rucksack, which, by the way, is overflowing with vintage finds from this time period. This time, my treasure hunt is leading me towards those wonderful designs that blended the classic with the revolutionary, a style that's truly inspiring!
We're off, darling! Imagine the scene: I'm perched upon Magic Meg, her mane and tail flowing like a ballet dancer's graceful arms, her hooves glistening like gold! She neighs, ready to leap back through time!
First stop? The Royal Ballet, because no time travel blog would be complete without a visit to one of the grandest ballet companies! On this very day, December 12th, the Royal Ballet, under the artistic directorship of the incredible Sir Frederick Ashton, was in full swing at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. You can bet my pink tutu was causing a stir! But darling, you see, there was so much to see! Ballet was already enjoying a revival during this period. Just the thought of all those costumes and styles โ oh darling!
Next, I had to hop aboard the New York City Ballet. It was 1970, and their dancers were creating a ballet scene to die for! You know what's fab about ballet history, darling? We can see the impact of this amazing art form evolving from this era in modern ballet today! On this day in New York, they were dancing the works of Balanchine, those graceful and incredibly modern creations that totally captivated me!
But that's not all, darling! Let's jump on board with the fabulous American Ballet Theatre. What better way to discover the dance world of this era than to experience those dynamic performances in New York? That day they were busy with The Firebird, that beautifully staged, mythical and magical ballet!
Remember those iconic costumes? Think Cabaret meets The Great Gatsby, and then sprinkle in some ballet finesse โ that was 1970, darling! My own pink tutu seemed quite at home in the stylish crowd โ they were just crazy about fashion, and with me having brought my pink, I felt totally integrated. I got my usual "Hello, Pink Tutu", and a "lovely costume," which always brings a smile to my face!
And what are you doing with those stunning accessories, I hear you ask? Well, darling, I couldn't resist bringing a little bit of that 70s glamour back with me! Just a few feather boas, perhaps a sparkly scarf, and let's not forget the iconic oversized sunglasses! I also found some incredible shoes โ platform boots that I absolutely had to try on.
But, darling, the absolute most important detail I couldn't live without? My handbag, which, just like me, is covered in glitter. This isn't your usual leather purse; no, my dear, this is vinyl, a fabulous 70s style touch that really added a flair!
Darling, this really is an era that is so important for understanding how modern ballet developed. I always say we have to look back, to see what has happened before and that includes looking at ballet's past!
So there you have it, darling. My journey to December 12th, 1970, a glimpse into the captivating ballet world, full of stylish moments and incredible dance, just a sprinkle of glitter, and a splash of pink!
Until next month, darlings, keep dancing, and remember to spread the joy of pink tutus!
