Pink Tutu Time Travels - Post 3735: March 3rd 1972 – Ballet Blossoms!

Hello my lovely ballet bunnies! Welcome back to Pink-Tutu.com for another jaunt through time with yours truly, Emma, your ballet-loving time-travelling blogger! It’s time to don your pinkest tutu and join me as we leap back to March 3rd, 1972, for a dance through the history of ballet and the world of pink tutus!

My fabulous pink steed, Magic Meg, - all shimmering pink mane, white tail, golden hooves and dazzling pink sparkles - is chomping at the bit, so let's saddle up!

Now, this date, 3rd March 1972, was just brimming with ballet brilliance. My rucksack is positively bursting with stories and finds! Let’s dive in!

A Spotlight on London

We began our trip in London. I'd just about caught my breath after the excitement of travelling, when my eyes spotted the gorgeous posters advertising "The Sleeping Beauty" at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden. That classic tale of love, dreams and fairies was absolutely drawing crowds.

But that wasn't the only reason for excitement. Did you know that right then, on the same night, another captivating ballet, "The Rite of Spring" by the Bolshoi Ballet was playing in a different London theatre? Two such incredible performances, both on the same night!

It's like a time traveller’s dream! I was spinning like a ballerina caught in a waltz, I was so happy!

It really brought home how ballet was flourishing, how much London embraced it - a true hotbed of dancing. I took a seat, felt the electric anticipation around me, and simply absorbed the beautiful movement. The beauty of the costumes - it was just like an enchanted story coming to life right before my eyes!

Across the Pond to New York City

My next stop was New York, the city that never sleeps… and boy, it didn't sleep that night either! I was at the New York City Ballet for a performance of the amazing Jerome Robbins’ "Afternoon of a Faun" - the choreography was a complete breath of fresh air, I couldn't get over the artistry and expression!

You just can't compare the feel of these older performances to modern ballet. The choreography, the costumes, the music – it’s truly transporting! It made me want to jump out of my seat, take my tutu, and dance the streets! (I kept myself restrained… just a little).

I also learned a lot about a little-known fact: 1972 was actually a huge turning point for American ballet - there was so much new work, so many talented dancers breaking ground and a whole generation getting enthralled by the power of ballet.

Ballet Fashion, oh La La!

As we ventured around London and New York, I wasn’t just getting caught up in the shows. Fashion, my other obsession, was bubbling in my heart. Imagine a bright pink dress, the pink tutu fabric fluttering around the hem, paired with sparkling silver sandals!

It was so much more than a garment, it represented a certain era, a specific style, and was part of the language of dance - all mixed with the chicest of the fashion scene. That’s the kind of power of ballet fashion that grabs my attention and my pink sparkles.

And you know me, I couldn’t resist indulging in a little vintage shopping. My rucksack now holds a magnificent pair of antique ballet shoes that a London shopkeeper offered me – a pair of soft, pink ballet shoes with ribbons, ready to grace a London stage just like those seen in the Royal Opera House production of "The Sleeping Beauty" just weeks before!

Paris: Where Dreams Become Tutus

Of course, my pink heart had to take a trip to Paris. Ah, the romance of it all! As we galloped towards Paris, Magic Meg was neighing with delight at the thought of Parisian cobblestones, and so was I.

Paris is known for romance, but that night, I found another romance, one made of dance. I witnessed a breathtaking performance by Rudolf Nureyev himself - yes, the iconic Nureyev! It's no surprise, but I must say he danced with the grace of a swan and the energy of a whirlwind, taking my breath away with his moves.

Imagine the sheer thrill! This was an actual once-in-a-lifetime chance to see this legendary ballerino. My heart was racing. I think my blush was almost as bright as Magic Meg's pink mane!

And of course, while in Paris, I did some serious fashion reconnaissance. Let's just say that French ballet style had me mesmerized - a blend of simple elegance with an incredible use of colour and dramatic details. There was so much to inspire!

My Ballet Musings:

Every stop of my trip is a story, every ballet show a chapter, and I am collecting them all! So far, 1972 seems to be a year where ballet became more than just art; it was an emotion, a feeling, and a movement of pure expression.

As always, my journey ends, but not my obsession. I’m heading to the theatre next weekend – and guess what? It’s the "Sleeping Beauty" performance that so enchanted me in my 1972 adventure. Maybe I'll even dust off my pink tutu!

So, to all the budding ballet enthusiasts out there, keep exploring the magic of ballet - its history, its fashion, and its captivating performances. Don’t forget to join me next month when we’ll time travel again!

See you then, ballet bunnies!

Stay sparkling!

Love,

Emma
