Hello, darlings! It’s Emma here, your pink tutu-clad time traveller, and welcome back to www.pink-tutu.com. It’s a brand new month, which means a brand new adventure!
As you know, I travel the world through time, discovering the wonders of ballet across the ages. This month, Magic Meg and I found ourselves whisked back to September 1975. The 70s are my favourite era for fashion, so this journey was a sartorial delight. Imagine, bell bottoms, platforms, and shimmering sequins. What a glorious era for a tutu-lover!
Let me tell you, 1975 was a year teeming with brilliant ballet performances, and finding my perfect pink tutu for this time period was a dream! It was made with a glorious tulle in the most gorgeous blush shade with delicate embroidery of little flowers, oh so perfect for this time.
Our first stop took us to the Royal Opera House in London, and wouldn't you know it, the Royal Ballet were performing “The Sleeping Beauty,” such a timeless classic. As I twirled through the lobby, the elegant crowd oohed and aahed over my blush-pink tutu, which I believe perfectly captured the enchanting atmosphere of this beloved ballet.
Just a few days later, we popped across to the Soviet Union to watch a production of “Swan Lake,” at the Bolshoi Theatre. The beauty of the performance, coupled with the exquisite architecture of the theatre, transported me back in time, like a scene from one of the famous Bolshoi Ballet movies. Their ballet dancers were so elegant, the audience were glued to their seats, the atmosphere was absolutely electric. We made quite an entrance, my sparkling Magic Meg pulling up to the theatre in a graceful, and, I might add, rather stylish, pink horse-drawn carriage.
Later, we visited New York City, and attended a delightful production of “The Nutcracker.” Such a charming performance! This ballet is just so magical, and to be there in the heart of New York during a performance like this was a true delight. Imagine – an iconic New York City street scene, the smell of hotdogs and coffee, then entering this grand, elegant theatre filled with children and families all enjoying this storybook ballet.
Now, to catch up with what else was happening in the world of ballet on September 1975. One of the most famous British dancers, Antoinette Sibley, made an impact by giving a dazzling performance of "Swan Lake" in a unique black swan tutu with long train that was unlike anything ever worn in the UK. It became legendary! I do love a good black swan tutu - my black one with the pink feathered trim and star detailing is quite a favourite.
Remember, darling, time travel is about more than just witnessing history. It’s about immersing yourself in its cultural nuances, appreciating the artistry of those who came before us. In the 1970s, there was a definite spirit of change and creativity, reflected even in ballet costume designs, and the use of more contemporary, free flowing, dynamic tutus, with colours that matched the energy of the time. And, to bring you some personal style advice - for the modern woman - embrace those bold colours and those dramatic, oversized shapes, and remember to find a way to include pink in every outfit.
As we continue our explorations of the world of ballet, remember, darlings, my mission is to bring the joy and elegance of the ballet world to you all. So, why not grab a friend, and head out for a ballet show this month. Or perhaps go for a dance class, and embrace the world of ballet.
