Hello my darling dance-lovers! It's Emma here, your favourite pink tutu-clad time-traveller, ready to whisk you back to the world of ballet, January 1st, 1978! My oh my, what a year to step into. I have been so excited to tell you about this one! But first, let me introduce you to my magnificent travel companion: Magic Meg, my trusty steed who whisked me to 1978. She’s a magnificent Shire horse, with shimmering pink coat, a mane and tail of the purest white, and hooves like polished gold. She’s just as excited as I am about our journeys!
Today, I’m pulling out my lovely pink sparkly rucksack (don’t you just love the iridescent sequins? whispers they match my tutu perfectly), and we’re stepping into the world of dance. Are you ready to embrace a little ballet history and a whole lot of pink tutus? Let’s go!
A Ballet Filled New Year!
Imagine: 1978, a fresh year dawning, and a ballet show beckoned. You wouldn't be wrong if you thought of this as a pretty standard New Year’s Eve scene - even in 1978. The world was alive with vibrant performance spaces and the sheer excitement of dance shows.
Now, I'm just as interested in the world off-stage as the show itself. Think of all those magnificent ballrooms, sparkling dresses and charming dance parties just outside the theatres! There’s an air of refined joy about this era - just the kind of setting I love to wander.
But before we explore those beautiful venues, let’s look at what was happening on this date in 1978 in the ballet world. On stage in New York City, American Ballet Theatre were showcasing the magic of a legendary production - The Nutcracker! Can you imagine being enveloped in the wintery magic of this timeless classic at the Metropolitan Opera House? Swoons
The Royal Ballet were lighting up the stage at the Royal Opera House with a programme of Romeo and Juliet. Now, who wouldn't be captured by the beauty of this ballet? It’s always a special treat, and in this era it was at the peak of its popularity. The Royal Ballet’s dancers were some of the finest in the world, so just imagine the magic in that theatre! I wish I was there.
Across the Atlantic in Berlin, the world-famous Deutsche Oper Berlin was home to another beautiful ballet, Cinderella, with choreography by the celebrated John Cranko. How delightful to witness the story of a Cinderella step into the world of dance and become a princess in pink - what a beautiful ballet to welcome the New Year!
You know me – I’m all about the details! When it comes to ballet fashion in 1978, it was truly a period of feminine glamour! Imagine dancers swishing in fluffy tutus, soft ballet shoes, elegant leotards, and the perfect touch of a ballerina bun, tied with a graceful satin ribbon. It was a era of exquisite detail – just like my own personal ballet style, of course!
Magic Meg & The Pink Tutu Travels!
Oh my, those were some spectacular shows! But Magic Meg and I weren’t just content to stand around and watch, we were ready to explore this incredible world of dance, 1978 style.
First stop – shopping! As you can imagine, my first stop was a delightful shop for tutus. It was an absolute dream! Tutus of every shade – with delicate lace, shimmery sequins, fluffy fabrics – and my heart practically burst with joy. Of course, I had to treat myself! After all, I do like a little tutu therapy - and a new pink one was definitely needed!
Our travels brought us to a grand ball - in 1978, a grand ball wasn't complete without the elegance of ballet! It’s amazing to imagine all the guests in their fine attire, ladies swirling in their ballgowns, gentlemen with charming smiles - and, of course, the dancers. The atmosphere must have been so elegant - and romantic! The perfect dance for this era is, of course, the waltz! Can’t you just see all those beautifully dressed couples, spinning around the room? Just imagine the music, the atmosphere - I could happily have danced all night!
Ballet Fashion Time Travels - and a Little Something Special
We then moved on to an iconic ballet school – a place filled with dreams and aspirations. I love these places, because you can almost feel the passion for ballet just hanging in the air. And just imagine, all those young dancers getting ready to follow their hearts, their feet, and their passion for ballet. Their dreams were a little like mine – they want to share the joy of dance, just like I do. But there’s one thing they don't have yet: a sparkling pink tutu, so I made sure to show them all my tutu collection! I hope it sparked a little inspiration.
Speaking of inspiration, I wanted to share something special with you today that I found during my 1978 journey. You’ve seen my love for tutus, and there was one tiny ballet-related treasure that captured my heart today - it was a vintage ballet brooch.
Made from sparkling silver and tiny sparkling pearls, it depicted a little ballerina on her tip-toes, with the most charming pink tutu I'd ever seen! I was so delighted to find it nestled among the items in my 1978 collection. I am going to have it perfectly preserved - I can already see myself wearing it with a beautiful evening gown - for a ballet performance, of course!
