Hello darlings! Welcome back to Pink Tutu Travels, where we explore the captivating world of ballet through the lens of time. I’m your host, Emma, and this month, we’re whisking you off to a very special date: 10th October, 1979. As you can probably tell, I'm utterly smitten with pink and everything sparkly. So imagine my delight when my time travel bestie, Magic Meg, decided we should head back to this year for a touch of disco-era brilliance. Now, you might wonder why a vintage pink tutu enthusiast like me would want to revisit the seventies, but just hold on a minute!
Now, let me give you the lowdown. Our faithful steeds Magic Meg and I were galloping through the streets of Derbyshire (we're local girls, after all!), when the scent of popcorn and excitement whisked us back in time. We landed smack-bang in the midst of the 1979 London International Ballet Festival. It was simply sensational! We practically floated to the Royal Opera House – my pink tutu, of course, fluttering like a pink butterfly amongst the crowds.
But let's back up a little. 1979 marked the very first time this glorious festival was held, with the prestigious Sadler's Wells Royal Ballet Company taking center stage! Can you imagine? Ballet royalty gracing the world with their artistry! And guess what I spotted amongst the eager crowds? I'm not joking - tutus, lots and lots of tutus! Not necessarily pink ones, of course, though I did see a fetching shade of blush! It was just beautiful! So much ballet inspiration!
Back at the Royal Opera House, it was the Ballet Theatre's night to shine. The company, known for its innovative and spectacular productions, performed “Giselle” - a true classic, brimming with the enchanting drama of the Romantic era. And there I was, watching the entire performance in my fluffy pink tutu, with my leather rucksack bursting at the seams, filled with gorgeous photographs, sketches of ballet dancers in vintage costumes and my little ballet journal for jotting down all the highlights. And you know what? Even in 1979, I found my love for all things ballet was stronger than ever.
While we were lost in the mesmerising world of "Giselle," a special event happened! The esteemed Rudolf Nureyev was at the helm of the company, conducting the orchestra for the finale of the evening's show. Talk about a ballet moment of legend!
I couldn't resist striking up a conversation with some of the locals (they loved my pink tutu, by the way!) and learned that this year, London wasn't the only place buzzing with ballet. The New York City Ballet was also showcasing its incredible artistry, celebrating 30 years of breathtaking productions with "Serenade." And I was told that the world-renowned ballerina, Maria Tallchief, was involved!
Time travelling with my beautiful Meg, as I often say, truly gives me the chance to experience the heart of ballet, in all its wonderful forms, from the majestic grand ballerinas and their handsome partners, to the smaller and often less recognized dancers who make it all so magically complete.
And my friends, let's be honest – nothing adds a little magic to a ballet journey quite like the allure of new fashion. 1979's style? Well, let's just say it was a time for bold colours, sparkling patterns and statement pieces! A fabulous mix of disco fever, classic elegance and just a touch of bohemian flair. Imagine long flowing dresses in silky shades, flamboyant bell bottoms, platform shoes, and glittering scarves… it's simply breathtaking. And believe me, it perfectly matched the vibrant energy of the performances.
So, dear readers, what else can I say? 1979 offered a glimpse into ballet’s captivating world – a celebration of creativity, talent and sheer, dazzling performance. As my magic pink tutu-wearing adventure goes, I’d say that this journey will forever stay in my heart, filled with memories of enchanting performances and a dazzling taste of seventies fashion.
