Hello darlings, and welcome back to my little corner of the internet, www.pink-tutu.com! It’s December, and the air is crisp and sparkling with excitement. You know what that means – time for another of my dazzling time-traveling escapades, all for the love of ballet!
This month, Magic Meg (yes, the majestic pink Shire horse with those golden hooves and that glorious mane, still the most stylish steed in time travel!) has carried me all the way to Moscow, Russia. Can you imagine? The snow is falling softly, creating a magical white landscape that complements my oh-so-pink tutu perfectly!
We're stepping back to the 12th of December 1979, and boy, is there a buzz in the air! I can practically smell the anticipation, the energy of those lucky souls ready for a night at the Bolshoi Theatre! This iconic building is bursting with stories and grandeur, and it's been whispering tales of artistry and movement for centuries.
You wouldn't believe the outfits! I spotted an elegant lady with a fur stole and shimmering silver dress – what a dream! But honestly, nothing beats the charm of the classic tutus and those beautifully embroidered bodices – timeless elegance in motion. I might just add a similar ensemble to my collection (did you know the Bolshoi has an incredible costume department? The sheer detail, the colours, the inspiration! Honestly, my rucksack can barely fit it all!).
Anyway, enough about my shopping! I had to see the performance myself, so Magic Meg took us to the theatre for the opening night of 'Don Quixote' with legendary dancer, Natalia Bessmertnova, as Kitri! The energy was palpable - a hush, then the spotlight hits the stage. A single spotlight focused on her. A quiet beat as the music swells, and then the world simply disappears – all that matters is her movement, her energy, her absolute mastery of ballet.
I have to say, Kitri and her sparkling dress with all its embroidery, that impossibly big, romantic, layered skirt! A vision, honestly. That night, I found myself transported, my own tutu a shimmering reflection of all that energy and artistry, twirling alongside Bessmertnova in my own fantastical dream! And to think, I was almost a year away from my own ballet debut in my hometown of Derby – oh, what a joy it all was!
Remember my ballet fashion darlings, this year we’re aiming to get as many people wearing pink tutus as possible, so if you’ve been tempted… I say, GO FOR IT! There’s something magical about that pink, just like the joy we feel from our time travels.
Let’s hop back to this fascinating year of 1979 - what else is going on in the world of ballet?
Well, you’ve got Mikhail Baryshnikov, the celebrated dancer, at the top of his game – this was the year he started his illustrious career at the American Ballet Theatre. The American ballet world is thriving, with choreographers like Twyla Tharp breaking boundaries and igniting dance with new forms. You wouldn’t believe the energy!
Meanwhile, London's Royal Ballet was rocking with the brilliant Antoinette Sibley leading the charge in the production of “La Sylphide.” A classic in its own right. Ballet is really blossoming in so many exciting ways across the globe!
As you see, my darlings, a love of ballet isn't just about graceful movements, stunning tutus and beautiful shows. It's a journey through history, a shared language of emotion, and a force that brings joy and inspiration to so many. It connects us all, no matter where in the world or in which century we find ourselves.
But hey, even pink tutus can't survive forever without some sustenance! We must take a break from this 1979 whirlwind! Magic Meg is chomping at the bit, ready to travel back to my humble Derbyshire home, so I can sip some lovely hot tea and indulge in some scrumptious cake before beginning preparations for my next grand ballet escapade! I can already imagine all the glamorous events I will experience – fashion shows in Paris, thrilling premieres in Vienna, oh, the possibilities are endless!
As always, darlings, until next month, stay inspired, keep twirling, and remember, in this pink tutu-obsessed world, every single day can be a breathtaking adventure!
