Hello darlings! It’s Emma here, your pink-tutu-loving time traveller! It’s a bright and breezy November morning here in Derbyshire, and I’m feeling inspired to take you on a journey through the annals of ballet history! This month, we’re going all the way back to November 11th, 1981!
Now, you might be thinking, “Emma, why 1981? What’s so special about that date?” Well, darling, let me tell you, 1981 was a truly spectacular year for ballet! It was the year of big hair, shoulder pads, and – oh, yes, of course! – breathtaking ballet performances.
So, let’s pack our pink tutu travel bag – I’ve just bought a stunning vintage feather boa for our trip – and hop aboard Magic Meg! You know, my shimmering, pink Shire horse with those magnificent golden hooves?
We’re going to dive into a world of dance, fashion, and incredible shows. Remember to wear a comfy pair of ballet flats – a little bit of sightseeing is in order!
A Trip Through Time with Emma & Meg: 11th November 1981
Upon arrival in 1981, we head straight to the ballet, because, well, it’s just not a time-travel adventure without it! You know me, darlings, a pink tutu always finds its way to a ballet!
*New York City Ballet at the New York State Theater: *
Oh, the excitement! The New York City Ballet is hosting a special performance at the Lincoln Center.
“Afternoon of the Faun” * and *“Symphony in C” are on the bill, both by Jerome Robbins! You know me and Robbins! The joy he brings to classical dance! A truly exceptional afternoon!
While we’re in New York, there are also performances at The School of American Ballet, a chance to witness young ballerinas blossoming into dancing stars. Oh! My heart does flutter at such a spectacle!
A Dance Party at The Royal Opera House
Meanwhile, over in London, The Royal Opera House was ablaze with ballet! This was a momentous night, darlings, with “The Nutcracker” captivating audiences. There is simply nothing like a Tchaikovsky score and the magic of ballet to whisk you away.
Now, what did they wear in 1981? Think tutus with oversized bows, leg warmers in clashing patterns, and a definite splash of color, darlings! You can bet I found myself in a delightful vintage boutique, browsing through the styles of the time. Imagine tutus in vibrant greens and blues! It is, you must agree, simply divine.
Back to the Future…and to a Fashion Fix
As we gallop back to Derbyshire, a cuppa, biscuits and a little post-travel chat on our blog is always in order.
*My Favourite Pink Tutu in 1981: *
Well, a certain vintage tulle tutu that caught my eye! In pale pink, with rows and rows of delicate ruffles, this tutu whispered to me of classic beauty and timeless elegance! A perfect blend of ballerina elegance and a hint of 80s glamour, what more could a time traveler ask for? I bought it for myself, of course, and I will be sharing its magic with you on a special upcoming video!
