Hello, darlings! It’s your favourite pink-tutu-clad time traveller, Emma, back with another whimsical trip through the annals of ballet history! Today, we’re taking a delightful jaunt back to the 2nd of February, 1983, a date brimming with dance delights.
I can almost feel the chill in the air as I picture myself riding through the Derbyshire countryside, Magic Meg, my glorious pink-sparkling Shire horse, pawing the frosty ground with her golden hooves. My fluffy, candy-pink tutu billows behind me as we speed towards our destination, the excitement buzzing in the air like a perfectly pitched pirouette. My leather rucksack is packed, ready to collect more exquisite ballet treasures – programmes, photographs, perhaps even a little snippet of ballet fabric from this exciting era!
Now, for a quick glimpse at what the ballet world was offering on this lovely day back in 1983. As usual, the ballet scene was positively bubbling with exciting productions!
New York City Ballet's Double Feature: The New York City Ballet, a true bastion of classical ballet, was offering a tantalising double bill. The programme included "Concerto Barocco" by George Balanchine, a ballet brimming with classical beauty, set to Bach’s vibrant score. Then, the audience would have been treated to the premiere of Peter Martins’s "Symphony in C."
Royal Ballet’s Majestic Masterpiece: Across the pond, the Royal Ballet in London was wowing audiences with Frederick Ashton’s captivating "La Fille Mal Gardée." This enchanting tale of love, trickery, and redemption is always a delight to behold, a testament to the enduring power of classic choreography.
Ballet West's Sparkling Success: Salt Lake City, Utah, saw Ballet West's glittering "Sleeping Beauty," a magnificent, opulent production brimming with charm and timeless grace. A grand ballet filled with whimsical characters, breathtaking costumes, and a captivating story - perfect for capturing the magic of a night at the ballet.
Ballet History, Fashion and Shopping in 1983
This period saw ballet fashion begin to evolve in exciting new directions! The 1980s were a decade of vibrant colours and bold patterns, and these trends found their way into ballet costumes. Leotards with bright, geometric patterns and colourful tights became popular, adding a splash of personality to the dancers' attire.
In ballet shoes, there was an increasing emphasis on innovation. New technologies were used to create more comfortable and supportive footwear for the dancers. However, the traditional, beautifully handcrafted satin slippers still remained a mainstay, a timeless symbol of the ballet world's elegance and artistry.
But it wasn’t just the ballet itself that was evolving! The fashion world was taking its cues from the dynamic energy of the 1980s, and this led to exciting trends that reflected the dance world. Oversized sweaters, leggings, and brightly coloured footwear were all the rage! The influence of ballet on street fashion was undeniable - think leggings, high-cut leotards and graceful movement! The dance world was influencing fashion on a grand scale!
Personally, my ballet wardrobe would have been a dream back in 1983! Imagine those brightly coloured tights and dazzling leotards – just begging to be twirled and danced in!
