Hello lovelies!
Itās your favourite pink tutu-wearing time-travelling ballerina Emma, back with another blog post! This month, Magic Meg, my stunning pink sparkling shire horse with golden hooves and white mane and tail, and I have travelled back to the 10th of October 1984. As you know, dear readers, my life's mission is to spread the joy and beauty of ballet everywhere I go, and get everyone wearing a pink tutu. And believe me, there was no shortage of inspiration for both in this particular time travel!
Now, if youāre looking for ballet fashion and happenings in 1984, well, letās just say the world was abuzz with dance! From the elegant, glittering glamour of the Metropolitan Opera to the groundbreaking dance styles emerging from all corners of the globe, it was truly a vibrant time for ballet.
As Magic Meg and I galloped through the bustling streets of London, I couldnāt help but feel the excitement in the air! You see, just a couple of weeks earlier, a truly legendary ballerina was making headlines: Margot Fonteyn, the āGoddess of Dance,ā was stepping onto the stage for a grand revival of the classic "Giselle." Can you imagine? To be present for such a historic performance? I wish I could have gone back in time to see it for myself!
I popped into a charming little shop tucked away on a quiet street and, of course, couldnāt resist browsing through the beautiful ballet fashion on offer. The shop was crammed with exquisite tutus, sparkling bodices, and beautiful shoes - the craftsmanship was impeccable! Just like today, you could find both classic styles and more daring, contemporary designs. I've tucked some of the exquisite "Leotards" and the fabulous "Leg warmers" that were all the rage into my leather rucksack! Oh, how I wish I could add them to my pink tutu wardrobe today!
Speaking of my rucksack, you know I can't resist adding treasures and tales to it on every time travel. This month, I was fortunate enough to stumble across the London Royal Opera House Programme, filled with the dates and information for upcoming shows. Just imagine seeing Sleeping Beauty and Swan Lake live! My head almost popped right off with excitement!
This whole time travel thing really is fantastic for the research, my dears! It gives me a true understanding of the evolution of ballet over the decades, and just how it's constantly growing, evolving, and changing!
Now, what really captivated me about this time period was the emergence of the incredible Mikhail Baryshnikov. Talk about talent, a phenomenal dancer. I spent quite a bit of time in the archive today reading about his performances. He even landed a lead role in the groundbreaking ballet āThe Rite of Springā. I also snagged a lovely piece of programmation from a performance of his - a real piece of history! It has already found pride of place on my ballet scrapbook, complete with some sparkling pink ribbons for extra pizazz.
I canāt believe weāre coming to the end of another amazing time-travel adventure. But you know what? Every journey gives me a whole heap of inspiration, and fuels my passion for pink tutus even more! Remember, dears, letās dance, and letās dance in style!
I'll be back next month with another incredible ballet-filled time-travel adventure! Until then, stay tuned, wear pink tutus and happy dancing!
Love,
Emma
