Hello, my darling ballet lovers! It's your favourite pink tutu-clad time traveller, Emma, back with another fabulous adventure! This month, Magic Meg and I galloped our way to 6th June, 1985, and boy oh boy, was it a whirl of ballet brilliance! I must say, I love that pink decade with its big hair and shoulder pads โ and the ballet? Absolutely fabulous, darlings!
Before we set off on this whirlwind of a journey, let me tell you about my fab new outfit. My trusty pink tutu twirls ever so beautifully, with layers of tulle cascading like a delicate dream. The perfect counterpoint is a fluffy pink cardigan with shimmering sequins. This time I've added some shimmery pink lipstick โ 1980s style is all about bold, bright colour! And of course, the whole ensemble wouldn't be complete without my new feather boa โ oh so chic and totally on trend!
And my faithful steed, Magic Meg, was magnificent as ever. Her shimmering pink coat glistened under the June sunshine. Oh, her golden hooves make such a satisfying clink-cloink on the cobblestones. And letโs not forget that stunning white mane and tail! Truly, she's a dream of a horse, just like my dreams of dancing in pink.
The Magic of the Royal Opera House
After our thrilling journey, we arrived in London and what did I see, darlings? The Royal Opera House, of course! I just had to pay a visit to this iconic ballet treasure. Imagine the stories whispered by its walls โ of great dancers like Margot Fonteyn and Rudolf Nureyev, legends I only get to see through my ballet book! I canโt wait to gather a story or two from their days for my blog โ my back pack is already brimming with ballet treasures!
Now, on this particular day, I managed to grab a ticket for the very special matinee performance โ "Don Quixote"! The dancers were exquisite! Such leaps, such precision, and such glorious artistry! They were practically soaring through the air! Oh, I just adore how a ballet can whisk you away to a completely different world! Just imagine yourself as a gallant knight or a beautiful princess - what a dream!
1985 - A Ballet Celebration
And my lovely dancers, 1985 was absolutely bursting with fabulous ballets! All around the world, audiences were captivated by stunning productions.
Just a few weeks earlier in May, I saw that "Giselle", one of my absolute favourite stories, had just finished its run at The Royal Ballet. Oh, what a joy! The intricate choreography and delicate romanticism made for a truly special performance.
My notes also show that a grand new production of "La Bayadere", premiered in the USA, full of sparkling sets and captivating storytelling. It made me long to see this magical journey across time, just like we are doing with Magic Meg!
There were some other fascinating events happening this June in 1985: the legendary dancer Mikhail Baryshnikov was performing at The Metropolitan Opera House, and in Germany, there was a fascinating production of "Taming of the Shrew" by the Hamburg Ballet.
Shopping Spree for a Pink-tastic Wardrobe!
And of course, I wouldn't be Emma the ballet time traveller if I didn't treat myself to some glorious 1980s fashion! Can you believe it? A vintage tutu shop just off Oxford Street! Pink tulle, feather boas, sequined bodices, you name it, it was there! I snagged a magnificent pink tulle tutu โ a magnificent find with delicate flower patterns around the hemline. The shop assistant told me it was a "festival-ready" tutu, which makes me want to get my dance moves ready for a ballet street performance โ perhaps in the park!
Then there was a lovely pink cardigan from a vintage clothing store. It was the most delightful pastel pink with sparkling sequined swirls. And who could say no to some fabulously fluffy 80's style shoulder pads? Just a bit of 80s glamour to go with my fab new look.
My dear readers, you should have seen me waltz out of those stores! Every glance I received in those feather-boa-swirling 80s days made me feel like the star of my very own ballet! I can tell you โ 80s fashion was certainly a joy to discover and relive.
