Hello, lovelies! It's Emma here, your resident pink tutu-wearing time traveller, and welcome back to Pink-Tutu.com, your go-to destination for all things ballet, time travel, and, of course, a dash of pink magic!
October is well and truly upon us, which means crisp autumn air, cosy nights in with a good ballet film, and, of course, the exciting prospect of planning for the Christmas season! Oh, how I do love Christmas! It's the perfect excuse to wear a gorgeous red tutu and sparkle like a Christmas bauble! But before we get swept away with the festive spirit, we're off on another time-travelling adventure today, and this month we're taking a little trip back to 10th October 1989, to see what the ballet world was up to back then!
My Magnificent Magic Meg
My loyal steed, Magic Meg, was positively gleaming this morning. Her pink sparkle was positively blinding in the early morning sunshine, and her golden hooves made a beautiful clink-clink on the cobblestones as we galloped towards the time portal. Today, Magic Meg's beautiful white mane and tail flowed in the wind, carrying us through the swirling vortex of time and landing us safely in London, England, on that fateful 10th October 1989.
Ballet on 10th October 1989
It seems that on this day, the ballet world was awash with talent! At the Royal Opera House in London, The Royal Ballet was captivating audiences with "The Sleeping Beauty," a classic favourite, while "The Nutcracker" was bringing its festive magic to the Birmingham Hippodrome, starting a run that would delight audiences throughout the season. In America, the New York City Ballet was holding "An Evening of Balanchine," a special program dedicated to the work of the legendary choreographer, and the San Francisco Ballet was presenting "A Midsummer Night's Dream" β what a delight!
I snuck into the back of the Royal Opera House in London, taking in the hushed anticipation as the audience settled into their seats. There were murmurs about the choreography and the dancers β how truly beautiful they were! They all seemed so poised and strong, with elegant, perfectly controlled movements. The costumes were magnificent too, with glittering sequins, shimmering silks, and tulle so light it practically floated in the air. It was a true celebration of all things ballet!
Collecting Ballet Treasures
In my little leather rucksack, I collected a couple of beautifully hand-stitched silk ballet slippers that were on display in a Covent Garden antique shop. The delicate satin and hand-stitched beads are truly works of art. It felt wonderful to slip them into my rucksack and whisper a quiet thank you to the seller. I love finding these treasures and taking them back with me!
Later in the day, I found myself backstage at the Royal Ballet, catching snippets of rehearsals, a delicious ballet gossip with some dancers who thought the new tutus were too short. They seemed so full of life and passion, with stories of their dance training and dreams of becoming a prima ballerina. My, itβs no wonder I adore this beautiful world of ballet!
Time for Tea and Ballet Talk!
As the sun set over London, painting the sky in shades of pink and gold, I settled into a charming cafe on Regent Street for a spot of tea. With a warm cuppa in hand, I pulled out my little notebook, ready to record my observations of ballet life in 1989.
My thoughts always return to my own ballet journey. Do you know, my darling dears, I discovered the wonder of the ballet at the tender age of 7? And since that magical moment, ballet has been my passion. I've poured my heart into mastering every twirl, leap, and arabesque, taking inspiration from those elegant swans and those magnificent leaps β all while wearing a pink tutu of course!
The story of my pink tutus is quite a long one, with my collection growing over the years. They come in every shade of pink, from blush to fuchsia. It is my goal to make sure every woman, every girl, finds their perfect pink tutu. After all, a tutu isn't just a costume β it's an embodiment of beauty, grace, and dreams!
A Day for Tutu Inspiration
In 1989, the world was a much different place. Ballet itself was evolving β new dance styles and choreographic interpretations were pushing the boundaries of this ancient art. I saw young girls in shops on Oxford Street and Kensington High Street eyeing those magnificent tutu skirts in their favourite shops, shops I love to this day - Next, Laura Ashley, Accessorize. They were so bright and vibrant β they captured the energy of the time.
And who knows? Perhaps in the future, people will remember 1989 for its incredible ballet scene, its iconic dancers, and, dare I say it, its love of the colour pink!
That's all for this month, darlings. Time to slip back through the portal with Magic Meg and return to my own time. Remember, a pink tutu is more than just a garment - it's a symbol of joy, elegance, and boundless possibility. So go on, unleash your inner ballerina, embrace the pink, and dance your heart out! I'll be back next month with another thrilling adventure from the world of ballet!
With love and pirouettes,
Emma
