Hello my darling dance enthusiasts, and welcome to my monthly journey through the captivating world of ballet history! Today, we’re swirling back in time to 2nd February 1990. A time of bright colours, grand stages, and a sense of excitement bubbling under the surface of the international ballet scene. As ever, my fabulous pink tutu is fluttering beside me as Magic Meg, my majestic pink Shire horse, preps us for the time warp to this unforgettable ballet era.
So, pop on your prettiest pink tulle and grab a cuppa, because you're in for a right treat as we take a peek at what the world of ballet was swirling around on this very date. I'm so excited, I could pirouette!
A Big Week for Bolshoi
First off, the mighty Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow was experiencing a week brimming with artistic brilliance. Their famous Swan Lake was wowing audiences with its captivating choreography and stunning sets. As always, the Bolshoi’s performances were full of energy and emotion, showcasing the very best in Russian ballet tradition. I was glued to the television, mesmerised by their exquisite precision and elegant expressions.
The excitement didn't stop there! The Bolshoi’s renowned principal dancer, Nina Ananiashvili, was shining brightly. Just imagine, her powerful, flowing movements and the pure elegance in her every gesture. This is what we call true ballerina grace! Oh, the sheer passion that pours through those ballets! It makes me want to twirl across a stage myself!
New York City's Ballet Extravaganza
Across the pond, the world of ballet in New York City was buzzing with vibrant energy! The New York City Ballet was staging "The Sleeping Beauty," a delightful classic that never fails to charm. As we know, Tchaikovsky’s exquisite score is one of ballet’s timeless treasures. It’s impossible not to feel a touch of magic as the melody weaves through the theatre, drawing the audience in to a fantastical fairytale world.
This week, the American Ballet Theatre was presenting "The Nutcracker," a dazzling holiday masterpiece, showcasing incredible costumes and dazzling choreography that captivated audiences. You could sense the joyous spirit of Christmas swirling within the theatre. Now, that's what I call a festive ballet treat!
A European Delight - La Scala's “Giselle"
Over in Milan, the illustrious Teatro alla Scala, was also steeped in ballet magic! La Scala is one of the most revered opera houses in the world and the company was performing their own version of “Giselle”, a story full of romantic tension and heartbreak. Imagine, the enchanting music and the ballet dancers in exquisite costumes telling the tale of true love and heartbreak. It sounds absolutely heavenly, wouldn't you say?
Ballet Beyond The Stage
But it's not just on stage where ballet was flourishing! The ballet fashion world was taking centre stage, with designers worldwide creating fabulous outfits that paid homage to the ballerina’s graceful silhouettes. From chic and sophisticated ensembles to dazzling creations bursting with colour, every fashion choice made a statement about the beauty and the power of dance. The designers were drawing inspiration from the fluidity and artistry of ballet, creating beautiful outfits that embraced the elegance and power of movement. Now that's what I call truly fashionable dancewear!

I’m planning to showcase it in my online shop – just wait until you see it! I can’t wait to share this enchanting treasure with my readers and ballet-lovers worldwide.
