Post #4015: July 1995: Dancing through the Decades!

Hey darlings! Emma here, back with another exciting voyage through the wonderland of ballet history! This month, I've landed on July 1995, a date brimming with vibrant energy, and, as always, my trusty pink tutu and sparkling Meg are right by my side!

As I write this, Meg's munching on a sugar cube, her golden hooves sparkling under the sunshine. I must confess, even after all my travels, she still steals my heart. The other day, I caught a glimpse of her reflection in a shop window - she's truly a vision of magic with that dazzling mane and tail and the pink shimmer in her coat!

Anyways, where were we? Ah yes, 1995! I must tell you, dear readers, the fashion scene is positively breathtaking this time around. The 90s are just so full of colour, with sleek, sassy styles. And guess what?! I've been browsing the stores for some seriously glam new outfits! My leather rucksack is now stuffed full of vintage finds – imagine my delight, I even found a silk shawl covered in twinkling sequins – I’m sure it would have been right at home in a production of La Bayadère!

Speaking of dazzling productions, I made a beeline for the stage in the grand old city of Paris, oh la la! And what do I find? A truly unforgettable performance of “La Bayadère”! The grand sets and opulent costumes were out of this world! And the ballerinas… pure perfection, dancing with such grace and precision! The corps de ballet moved like a symphony, with every twirl and leap a marvel of artistry. It really was a masterpiece, dear readers, and, just wait until you hear this… it was choreographed by none other than the iconic, legendary Marius Petipa! You know, he's a name you need to know in the ballet world, a master choreographer who revolutionised classical ballet as we know it.

But that's not all, my dears! There’s something for everyone this month. The English National Ballet was holding an incredible run of their "La Fille Mal Gardée", in London – pure fun with so much character. The English National Ballet were just a whirlwind of talent! Oh, and The Royal Ballet premiered "Sylvia" in London, it was absolutely magnificent. They were in London! So much talent! Oh, I just know everyone’s looking forward to another run in 2003, a must see.

Now, for a moment, I want to rewind a little. Back in the days of 1995, ballet was really gaining momentum. There was an explosion of creativity, and so many exciting choreographers like Mats Ek, William Forsythe, and Jiri Kylian were doing groundbreaking things. Ballet companies around the world, including the Netherlands Dance Theatre and Alvin Ailey American Dance Theatre, were pushing boundaries, incorporating diverse styles and showcasing incredibly dynamic techniques!

But here's a secret, my lovelies! There is something truly captivating about stepping back into time and exploring the roots of ballet, the very essence of its elegance and artistry. In my recent travels, I found myself in the 19th century, mesmerized by the beauty and tradition of Romantic ballet. I must admit, even a pink tutu-loving girl like myself, could find beauty in those flowing white tutus!

Of course, I wouldn't dream of travelling back in time without finding something special for my website. So I set out to learn about the legendary dancers of the time, people like Fanny Cerrito and Carlotta Grisi – truly stars of the stage in those romantic days, dazzling audiences across Europe with their ethereal grace! You know, they really were trendsetters, inspiring the grand tutus we know and love today!

Oh, and before I go, dear readers! Do you know, my love affair with all things pink led me to a breathtaking exhibition in the French city of Bordeaux? Imagine this… A celebration of everything pink in art and fashion, from pastel hues to vibrant fuchsias. It truly was a spectacle for the senses, and it left me absolutely smitten with the colour! It reminded me just how much inspiration can be found in the most unexpected places, like in the vibrant hues of a dress or the graceful movements of a dancer!

That’s it for this month’s trip down memory lane. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I must hurry and find a gorgeous pink hat to match my new sequinned shawl, but first I think Meg and I deserve a cuppa! Until next time, keep twirling and stay beautiful!
