Pink Tutu Time Travels - Post 4017: September 1995: A Whirl Through the Ballet World!

Hello lovelies! It’s your favourite time-travelling ballerina, Emma, back with another fabulous post from my magical, pink-filled world of time travel! Buckle up your tap shoes, grab a cheeky scone, and let’s step into the world of ballet on September 1995.

Now, this particular date holds a special place in my pink-hued heart, because it’s the month where the Royal Ballet presented a truly incredible performance of "The Sleeping Beauty" at the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden! Oh, how I adore that majestic stage, all grand and golden! Imagine the magic, darlings. Just imagine…

(Cue dramatic orchestral swells)

I, of course, found myself transported on the back of my wonderful Magic Meg, that gorgeous pink-sparkling Shire with hooves of gold and a mane as white as freshly fallen snow. She’s just the best for time travel! I swear she understands me – just a quick thought about my next historical stop and we're off, flying through the eras!

1995 - It’s A Fashionable Thing!

The first thing that struck me in London on that particular day, September 1995, was the fashion, darlings! It was just so vibrant! Bright colours, a little bit of grunge, the very early beginnings of the comeback of the 1960s fashion – you just knew this era was about embracing your personal style! Remember the Spice Girls? Iconic! You know what they say… "If you wanna be my lover, you gotta get with my rhythm." I've got to say, I am loving this fabulous retro 90s comeback we're having right now!

But what about ballet fashion you say? Well, darlings, we still haven't fully escaped the 80s in the dance world – leg warmers, oh dear – but I saw the tiniest whispers of things changing. The sleek lines of the 90s were already creeping in, and that iconic punk ballerina look was making its first exciting appearance! A lot of tutu was still about the big, fluffy Romantic style - but that’s starting to shift, I can tell!

September 1995 in Ballet - Where the Magic Happens!

As I told you earlier, my eyes lit up at the mention of "The Sleeping Beauty" at the Royal Opera House. It’s one of my very favourite ballets - I just adore that story! I popped on a bright pink tutu with diamanté sparkles and sat right in the front row. Talk about glamorous! It’s one thing to time travel, it’s another thing to travel in style!

This production had the incredible Darcey Bussell in the leading role. Now, this lady has the grace and fluidity of a willow swaying in the wind, absolutely mesmerising. Imagine all those pirouettes and leaps! Just magnificent!

I had to grab my ballet rucksack and scribble down every bit of detail of her costume – a gorgeous deep purple bodice and the most intricate detailing on the tutu. A bit of magic is just what’s needed to make any outfit truly sparkle!

Other ballet treats in September 1995...

… included a wonderful "La Sylphide" at Birmingham Royal Ballet (the very first time that ballet was on my to-do list!). There was also the stunning "Romeo and Juliet" being presented in Boston – can you believe it? My international wanderlust was truly taking over. This date is overflowing with ballet wonder!

Of course, I'm not one to miss a ballet class either, darling! That September 1995 found me twirling away in Derbyshire. (If you ever come visit, don't be shy about saying hello!) It felt so inspiring to be in the middle of the countryside, surrounded by the peace of nature and yet immersed in the dynamic world of dance. You just need to follow the rhythm of your own heart and then – whoosh! - off you go!

So, lovelies, what a month, right? There you have it – my time-travelling escapade in September 1995! This is what truly excites me about being a ballet-obsessed time-traveller, the opportunity to soak up history's amazing theatrical creations!

Stay tuned for my next trip, darlings.

Until next time!

Emma
