Pink Tutu Travels: A Whirl Through Time – November 1998

Post Number: 4055

Hello, my darling darlings! Welcome back to Pink Tutu Travels – your monthly dose of ballet history, fabulous fashion, and, of course, my adventures with the dazzling Magic Meg! This month, we're waltzing our way back to November 1998, a year overflowing with thrilling ballet performances and stunning designs! I must confess, this trip had me feeling absolutely giddy. After all, what could be better than witnessing history in a glorious, glittering pink tutu?

Fashion First: Oh, darling, November 1998 was a treat for the eyes! Let's start with fashion, which is, after all, the fuel that fires my pink-hued soul. This period embraced the glamorous: vibrant colours, bold silhouettes, and, naturally, my beloved tutus!

The Royal Ballet had the exquisite Natalia Makarova in a new “Giselle,” and you know how I love a classic. Just imagine those delicate ruffles, the flowy layers, the ethereal lightness! And, of course, The Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow was as grand as ever. From the sleek, flowing lines of the costumes in their “Don Quixote” to the elegance of the “Sleeping Beauty” productions, every performance was a symphony of artistic movement and breathtakingly beautiful clothes!

But hold onto your tutus, my lovelies, because we're not done! In 1998, the fabulous world of ballet also had something extra special brewing – a touch of “modern”.

The Netherlands Dance Theatre brought out a sensational new production, “Wunderland.” With costumes reflecting a fantastical, whimsical world, they redefined what we understood about ballet attire. William Forsythe, a true innovator in ballet fashion, designed outfits that felt as modern as they were bold. We're talking edgy silhouettes, playful colours, and a daring disregard for the traditional – which always gives me the best of the best feelings!

The Royal Ballet didn't disappoint either. In their production of “The Vertiginous Thrill of Exactitude,” the outfits reflected the very essence of contemporary dance - sharp, precise, with a modern edge that, frankly, had my little ballet heart thrumming with excitement.

Meg’s Magical Journey

You'll never guess what I managed to snag this month from the time period - an exquisite pink feathered fan, from a“Don Quixote” performance in Moscow! Isn't it simply divine? I love how delicate and elegant it is, a perfect addition to my growing collection of ballet souvenirs. This one's going straight into my leather rucksack. The leather feels as smooth as silk. Isn't Magic Meg magnificent? We're definitely a dream team - her mane sparkling under the moonlight, my pink tutu swirling in the breeze as we trot through time, oh, it’s all just pure enchantment!

Time Travelling in Derby

Now, let's talk about the place we call home, Derbyshire! This month, I was particularly drawn to the vibrant cultural life of Derbyshire. Imagine: attending a "Nutcracker" ballet at the Derby Theatre, its gorgeous ornate stage and elegant auditorium a fitting setting for a magical production. The Derbyshire County Council had their annual Christmas events. All the while I felt a delightful surge of joy, remembering how important ballet was to my own upbringing here. I think about how magical it is to see how the past holds echoes of the present.

A Dance Through History

What's it like to travel through time, you ask? My darlings, it's a glorious swirl of enchantment, and for someone like me, whose passion for ballet has no limits, it's pure heaven. Every adventure offers new stories, incredible fashion, and of course, a chance to bask in the world of ballet. It’s a beautiful world full of captivating narratives, and as we wander through these fascinating eras, it always makes me appreciate the time I'm living in today! I adore getting lost in the ballet stories, from the delicate choreography of “Giselle” to the exciting modern flair of “Wunderland.” The world of ballet is a rich tapestry, and I, my dears, am the fortunate weaver.

A Tutu for Everyone

I encourage each of you to experience this wonderful world. Embrace your inner ballerina, grab your dearest friend, and embark on a dance adventure! And don't forget - my wish is to see everyone, everywhere, wearing a glorious pink tutu! Every month I am out performing to help finance my journeys - its been tough in the recent years since 2008! Maybe, just maybe, my blog can help us to change the world for the better with a touch of magic! Let’s be kind to each other, let's be loving, and most importantly, let's remember that even in our daily lives, there's always a place for a twirl and a flourish!

I can’t wait to whisk you away to another time period, so keep your eyes on the pink-tutu.com website! Until next time, stay sparkly!

XOXO, Emma
