Hello, my dearest tutu enthusiasts! Emma here, your resident pink tutu-wearing, time-traveling ballet blogger, ready to whisk you away to a most spectacular trip through the annals of ballet history!
It's the 7th of July, 1999, and, my goodness, can you believe we are just months away from the big change – the end of the millennium! We're still riding high on the wave of the 90s, and in the world of ballet, the excitement is bubbling over. I'm feeling absolutely giddy, as you can tell! I simply adore the 90s. The bold styles, the dynamic energy, the experimentation. And oh my, the tutus – they are divine! I must admit, I always feel so inspired to whip up a new outfit after venturing into the past! It's why I've always carried my trusty rucksack, stuffed to the brim with lovely bits and pieces to inspire my own ballet creations! 😉
I found myself at the Royal Opera House, where The Sleeping Beauty was gracing the stage in a gloriously glittering production by Anthony Dowell. Honestly, my dear readers, I always feel a touch of magic at the Royal Opera House. That place, its history – it’s just…it’s truly magical! This particular production featured the enchanting Alina Cojocaru as Aurora and the dashing Carlos Acosta as the Prince. It was a breathtaking night of elegant storytelling and breathtaking choreography. After the show, I felt utterly spoilt as I snuck backstage to nab a piece of a beautiful hand-painted backcloth. Isn't it amazing what you can discover with a bit of time travel and a sprinkle of magic?
Speaking of magic, where would I be without my beloved Meg, my trusty pink Shire horse? She certainly deserves all the sugar cubes she can get, after whisking us back from London to Derbyshire last night! We were lucky enough to witness the opening of a spectacular new ballet school here in my home county, the wonderful "Derby Ballet Theatre." They aim to provide exceptional ballet training for the area, which fills me with a lot of joy and hope. This really is a momentous occasion for the Derbyshire community!
The world of ballet is buzzing today! At the Boston Ballet in the United States, they’re presenting their exciting “Dance Kaleidoscope,” showcasing various talents and dance styles. Across the Atlantic in Germany, a revival of Don Quixote at the Bavarian State Opera was captivating audiences with its grand scale and incredible costumes. This tells me that in this world, ballet has its finger firmly on the pulse!
On my travels through the year 1999, I noticed a definite trend for more experimental pieces being introduced to ballet troupes. From minimalist designs to vibrant, almost futuristic pieces, I'm thrilled by the exciting new path ballet is taking! Of course, a touch of classic grandeur can never be missed! But for those of us who enjoy the artistry of ballet, seeing such a variety is definitely exhilarating.
Speaking of art, I just had to share some fascinating news: the Musée du Louvre is hosting a fantastic exhibition devoted to Degas and his passion for ballet! Can you imagine? Just walking around that majestic palace and then witnessing Degas’ work through the lens of ballet… I simply couldn’t resist joining the crowd. It is a delight for both the art lover and ballet aficionado within me.
I am so grateful to have shared these fantastic ballet discoveries with you. Every month I love delving into the history of this wonderful world, whether I am watching a groundbreaking modern ballet or seeing a classic interpretation. But remember, I’d love to hear about your ballet experiences, whether in the past or present! Leave me a comment on www.pink-tutu.com! Let’s chat about our favourite moments!
Until next month, darling friends,
Emma

P.S. As always, don't forget – a pink tutu can enhance any outfit, and I highly recommend taking it out for a twirl, even if your adventures are simply around the block! 😄 ✨
