Ballet Time Travel Blog: Post 4071 - March 2000 - Whirl Through the Twentieth Century!

Hello lovelies! It's Emma here, your resident pink-tutu wearing time traveller! Today I'm taking you on a trip through March 2000, and believe me, it's a doozy! This was a month brimming with ballet, so buckle up and grab your pink tutus (we’re going to be twirling the day away)!

Now, let’s talk about Magic Meg, my trusty steed, a pink sparkling shire horse with golden hooves and a mane and tail like spun white silk. She was the perfect partner for this journey, taking me on a whimsical trip back to a world of incredible ballet! We were off on a mission, as always - collecting memories, and bringing the enchantment of the dance world to the world.

My backpack was ready – bursting with pink tissue paper, and ready to capture the stories and trinkets of the time. Imagine my delight when I found a beautiful vintage program for “The Sleeping Beauty” at Covent Garden, London. Such a gem, especially as I'm hoping to see a performance later this month! I think the delicate, ethereal choreography of Marius Petipa really captures the romantic essence of the era, so if you have the chance to see it, you absolutely should!

March 2000, the world of ballet was thriving with new productions. There was so much exciting stuff on offer, it was a true treat! The Royal Ballet premiered “Sylvia” – a masterpiece of pure romanticism! A grand neoclassical ballet with sweeping music from LĂ©o Delibes, It was set to enthral audiences for years to come.

Speaking of enchantment, how could I miss the breathtaking revival of the famous “Swan Lake?” It’s a tale as old as time, a true icon! There was something truly magical about the choreography by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov, it's like they weaved a story right in front of you! This was definitely one for the ballet books! I felt completely immersed in the tragic story of Odette and Siegfried – there were definitely a few happy tears shed that evening!

I can’t forget to mention the exciting opening of "La Sylphide", also in the repertoire of the Royal Ballet this month. This exquisite production was so light, airy, and whimsical that it left a spell on my soul – not to mention my aching muscles from trying to copy some of those exquisite leaps and bounds. I just know I'll be dancing it for weeks!

And let's talk fashion – ah, the darling costumes of the early 2000s! I think my own balletwear was channeling a bit of that '90s and early '00s look – it was like I had stepped straight out of a dance scene!

You can’t imagine how excited I was about a brand new “La Fille mal gardĂ©e" by the Paris Opera Ballet. It was all about that charming comedic choreography by Frederick Ashton that keeps audiences laughing!

Oh! I can't forget! The Royal Ballet’s production of "Cinderella" was also opening in March, this story was so beautiful and charming, I could see how it enchanted everyone, even if we’re a bit too old for fairytales! (wink).

And don’t get me started on the ballet performances taking place all over the globe! This month was packed with performances in Russia, Japan, the United States, Italy - practically everywhere! The world really is on its toes! I simply had to make a trip to see the “Giselle” by the American Ballet Theatre!

The energy at the performance was amazing - the energy was just buzzing! The choreography was just mesmerising - all those incredible pirouettes! Even my favourite time-travelling horse Magic Meg couldn’t resist joining in on the applause after each performance! I swear, she can’t hear the music without tapping her hooves, let alone clapping – just as much a ballet enthusiast as I am!

On a lighter note, let’s not forget the excitement surrounding the dance competitions – the joy and skill that were on display! There was nothing quite like the energy of these events - it just fuels my passion even more!

Oh, before I go! Did I tell you about the magnificent dress I bought at the local ballet store, “Dancewear Design"? It's this beautiful pale pink chiffon, with a swirling pattern - it was like it had been made for my ballerina soul! It will look absolutely stunning with my favourite pink tulle skirt!

Until next month, lovelies. Stay twirling and spread the love of ballet. And remember, it’s not about perfect posture, beautiful turnout, or being able to do a double tour - it’s about finding your joy and freedom within the movement of your soul! I want to see everyone embracing their inner ballerina, even if it means grabbing a pink tutu, don’t forget your sparkling fairy shoes and let your feet take you to new places – both on stage and in your everyday life!

Love and twirls,

Emma xx
