Hello my darlings! Emma here, your time-travelling ballerina, back with another whirl through history! This month we're spinning back to November 2005, a time when the ballet world was bursting with beauty and grace!
(I must confess, as I write this, I'm sitting at my desk, surrounded by piles of silk, tulle, and feathers - all carefully tucked into my leather rucksack. My trusty steed, Magic Meg, is patiently snoozing outside, dreaming of shimmering sugar plums and boundless meadows. You see, my latest collection of ballet stories is going to be inspired by the magic I'm about to share with you today.)
A Symphony of Swirls and Twirls
November 2005! Oh, what a beautiful time for ballet. The Royal Ballet was in full swing, bringing the heart-stopping "The Sleeping Beauty" to London audiences. My heart was set aflutter - I'd seen it countless times, but every performance is a unique experience. The grand costumes, the graceful ballerinas, the spellbinding music β it's pure magic!
Across the Atlantic, American Ballet Theatre (ABT) was putting on a grand performance of "Giselle". Such tragedy and passion on the stage! I was especially captivated by the poignant duet of Giselle and Albrecht, their love and despair brought to life in every graceful move.
In Paris, the renowned Ballet de l'OpΓ©ra de Paris was enthralling audiences with "Romeo and Juliet". Ah, those achingly beautiful pas de deux! This tale of love, loss, and fate always stirs my soul, leaving me wanting to fly onto the stage myself and twirl away my sorrow!
A World of Inspiration
Even though I was mesmerized by the professional world, I also spent some precious time enjoying a delightful evening at The Royal Ballet School. To see the young talents β future ballerinas in their prime - filled me with joy and inspiration! The energy and passion they possess are truly remarkable.
While watching the students, I started jotting down ideas for my latest "Pink Tutu Collection" for the website - a vibrant burst of colour, reflecting the youthful energy of the young ballerinas and the exquisite costumes. (A bit of pink and sparkly, of course, but with some hints of gold and sapphire to represent the spirit of November! The designs are already swirling in my head!)
Ballet Adventures - On and Off the Stage
Remember my little shop on London's Covent Garden? Well, it's a little secret spot for my little ballet ventures. The air hums with the anticipation of an evening at the ballet! And trust me, itβs not just the elegant theatregoers I love watching - I adore spotting those exquisite dancers exiting the theatre after the performance! I just wish I had the audacity to strike up a conversation with them β to ask about their latest roles and hear them share stories about their life as a ballerina! Perhaps I should make some pink tutus with some dazzling "chatter-starter" accessories β something a little more daring than my usual feather-boas!
I took some inspiration for my shop from the "Nutcracker" performance - I spotted some gorgeous, sparkly accessories, and some gorgeous vintage tutus (perfect for those ballerina-inspired evening cocktails, I thought!).
The energy on Covent Garden in November was electric! Every corner was buzzing with excitement β theatres, opera houses, art galleries - a true cultural wonderland!
Speaking of galleries... Oh, I almost forgot! My favourite shop β "The Ballerina" - on Charing Cross Road had a wonderful display of ballet memorabilia and fashion. The windows shimmered with images of Degas and Toulouse-Lautrec, alongside an incredible exhibition of beautiful pointe shoes from every era - from the most simple to the most exquisite. They even had a small section devoted to the costumes of the iconic 1950s dancer Moira Shearer, the ultimate symbol of grace and beauty!
(This sparked another idea for the Pink Tutu website β an online exhibition of the greatest ballerina fashion! Oh, how I long to own just one of those sparkly costumes from the 1950s!)
Pink Tutu Fashion - In My Mind!
And finally, before I slip into my enchanted sleep tonight, a little update on my own fashion experiments... My newest ballet costume arrived β a fabulous shimmering pink tutu with pearl-embellished silk flowers around the waistband. Oh, it is the most breathtaking colour!
The thing is...I can't find the perfect dress for when I'm not on stage! My trusty leather jackets and jeans are all well and good when riding Magic Meg, but they feel terribly wrong for my ballerina evenings! What does a girl do?
Well, I've decided to create a collection of beautiful ballet-inspired clothing, from evening gowns and dresses, to jackets and casual pieces that reflect the elegance and beauty of the ballet world. Think chic designs, luxurious fabrics, and just the right amount of glitz and glamour, all made in vibrant shades of pink.
After all, why shouldn't we all feel like ballerinas every day?
And that brings us to the end of this month's adventures! Tune in next month for more ballet adventures, news and stories!
As always, keep the spirit of ballet alive - dance your way into happiness!
Your ballerina,
Emma.
