Post #4147: Dancing Through the Decades - 2006-2007

Hello, my lovely ballet bunnies! It’s Emma, your Pink Tutu-clad time-travelling ballerina, ready to whisk you back to a year that positively sparkles with twirls and grace: 2006-2007. Remember, the world of ballet is always alive and vibrant, no matter which year you’re dancing in!

This month, my dear Meg, the most fabulous pink sparkling Shire horse with hooves like burnished gold and a flowing mane of spun moonlight, has taken me on a magical journey back to the beginning of the 21st century. What a truly captivating time for ballet, and it’s time for me to share all the wondrous stories I’ve collected in my trusty leather rucksack.

A whirlwind of Tutus

2006-2007 saw a beautiful array of exciting performances sweeping across the globe! In London, the Royal Ballet graced the stage with breathtaking productions of “Giselle”, "Swan Lake," and "The Sleeping Beauty," making everyone gasp in delight and reach for their hankies, especially at the heartbreaking end of the second act of "Giselle" where Giselle is caught in a whirl of passion and heartbreak. The ballet was stunning, and it was definitely an occasion for a sparkling tiara, a dainty pair of pink gloves and my finest pink tutu - which I most certainly wore! I managed to snag a couple of backstage tour passes, so of course, I had to don a dashing outfit of blush pink and sequins to take a look behind the scenes. Let me tell you, it was truly magical - the dedication and hard work of those incredible dancers is awe-inspiring!

The New York City Ballet was busy delighting audiences with works by choreographers like Christopher Wheeldon, Peter Martins and the legendary George Balanchine. Their "The Nutcracker" ballet at Lincoln Center is always such a popular choice at this time of year - full of adorable little children, dazzling costumes and enough fairy dust to send even the most hardened heart soaring. If you can snag a seat, it's a must-see! I snuck backstage to speak with the lead dancers, who generously gifted me some signed programs! A keepsake I shall treasure for all eternity.

Across the channel in Paris, the Opéra National de Paris unveiled a magnificent production of “Swan Lake” by Pierre Lacotte, showcasing some incredible feats of strength and artistry, which left me in utter awe. Oh my word, those tutus! The swans seemed to melt away into graceful plumes of gossamer and swan down, their every move was an explosion of perfection.

But my journey didn’t stop there, darling! Across Europe, ballet stars lit up the stage, enchanting everyone in their path. The Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow, renowned for its robust Russian tradition and sheer spectacle, performed timeless masterpieces like “La Bayadère”, making everyone’s hearts beat just a little bit faster with those dazzling dramatic leaps and thrilling group routines. And oh, how I adored the ballerina costumes with their delicate tulle and elaborate ornamentation. Simply exquisite!

I managed to squeeze in a visit to Germany to catch the “Swan Lake” ballet at the Bayerisches Staatsballett in Munich. Their grand production of “Swan Lake” was a masterpiece - such graceful dancers with absolutely astonishing jumps and spins.

Back in Derbyshire: The Magic of Ballet

Here at home in Derbyshire, ballet life is thriving! The ballet studios here are alive with twirling energy and aspiring dancers - such passion! The ballet is in our blood! Our local amateur ballet school is preparing a stunning rendition of “The Nutcracker”. It's lovely to see all the young talent blossoming. I even helped out with a few of the costumes - they all came up like new! It felt so satisfying to add my own little pink-tutu touch to the performances.

And the icing on the cake? It's time for the annual "Derbyshire Dance Festival", a delightful showcase of young and experienced dancers with styles ranging from classical ballet to contemporary and jazz! It's a true celebration of our love for the art of dance. The costumes at the dance festival this year were fabulous – bold and colorful with just a dash of sparkle – perfectly complimenting the energetic choreography!

Fashion's Whirlwind

Speaking of fashion! 2006-2007 saw a vibrant embrace of colour, especially those dreamy shades of pink! We are experiencing the start of a wonderful era of ballet fashion, and what better colour to embrace this evolution than with pink, darling? It's vibrant and fun and suits every type of dancer - from delicate fairy to fiery prima ballerina. In the shops, the most fabulous ballet shoes in candy-coloured pink are sprouting up. There are gorgeous pink tulle tutus that wouldn’t look out of place in a royal ballet, and sparkly leotards designed to light up the stage! My very own “Emma’s Tutu Boutique” was flourishing too, a delightful little haven filled with pretty, sparkly tutus and ballet fashion. The girls in Derbyshire love shopping there, and I make sure that everyone finds a piece of pink tutu magic that makes their heart flutter with joy!

Don't Forget The Importance of Support

But fashion and glamour are only part of the story, darlings! We must remember the importance of support and nurturing, particularly for young dancers who are taking their first, hopeful steps into the world of ballet. My little niece Emily is attending the newly established "Derbyshire Ballet Academy" in Matlock. This brand new Academy has a fantastic team of teachers, who are absolutely brilliant at nurturing those blossoming talents. And Emily just loves all the ballet books and DVDs I gift her. She tells me it inspires her every day, and makes her want to practice even more. So rewarding!

The Dance Goes On!

The world of ballet is constantly evolving, dancing its way through the centuries, sharing its stories of grace, strength, and artistry with every generation. And you can be sure that I will be there, dancing along, sharing all the wondrous tales I find!

But enough talk! Get your dancing shoes on! Whether it's at the theatre or at your local studio, join the world of ballet! We can't have everyone wearing a pink tutu without you!

Till next time,

Emma x
