Pink Tutu Time Travel - Blog Post #4185: September 2009 – A Trip to the Russian Ballet

Hello lovelies! Emma here, back with another exciting time travel adventure, and oh my goodness, this one was truly magical! It’s been a while since my last post, but my dear Meg and I have been busy exploring the world of ballet through the ages, and this month’s trip is one you won’t want to miss!

Remember, I’m all about the ballet! It’s my passion, my life, my pink tutu-clad everything! And what could be more thrilling than time-hopping back to the 20th Century to experience ballet firsthand?

So grab your favourite pink teacup, pour yourself a cup of chamomile, and settle in for a delightful journey back to September 2009…

It was a glorious sunny morning when Meg and I set off for Russia, where we had tickets for a special performance of the world-famous Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow. Now, let me tell you, Meg – my magnificent pink shire horse with a dazzling golden mane, sparkling golden hooves, and tail as white as spun snow – simply shimmered under the early morning sun. Her pink satin bridle with diamante accents just perfectly complemented my own pink silk tutu and matching tiara. It was quite a sight to behold!

Arriving in Moscow, I couldn’t help but be mesmerised by the vibrancy and grandeur of the city. It felt like stepping into a ballet scene itself, with cobbled streets and breathtaking architecture.

The Bolshoi Theatre is something else, darlings! Such intricate details, such history within its walls. I almost felt a shiver of excitement just stepping through the grand entrance!

We had arrived just in time to see the legendary dancer, Natalia Osipova, in the starring role of 'Giselle'. I couldn’t believe my eyes! Her talent was beyond anything I could have imagined, so effortless, so graceful, she danced like a butterfly fluttering on the wind!

After the performance, I was buzzing! It was everything I had hoped for, and more! There was a certain magic in the air, that palpable passion for the art form, it just lifted you up.

In 2009, the Bolshoi was in the news quite a bit, and I had heard whispers of some trouble. It felt quite bizarre knowing the future was on the cusp of change, a change I couldn't quite grasp.

As I strolled around Moscow after the show, I happened upon the most delightful little boutique overflowing with ballet tutus, leotards, and all sorts of dancewear in every shade imaginable. I found the most exquisite pale pink tutu with delicate embroidery - it simply had to come home with me. It wouldn’t be right to travel all the way to Russia and not bring back a little something special for my collection, wouldn’t it?

But that wasn’t all I picked up that day! As I wandered through the bustling markets, I discovered a handwritten ballet program from a past performance of Swan Lake! It was in Cyrillic, of course, but the pictures of the costumes were simply beautiful! It’s going straight into my leather rucksack – the one I always take with me for my ballet souvenirs and stories from the past.

Meg and I took in a few more ballet performances, even enjoying the Russian equivalent of "Dancing with the Stars!" which, surprisingly, involved a fair bit of glitz and glam and of course, pink tutus. I always find it fascinating to see how ballet, the elegance and artistry, touches the hearts and minds of so many people, even beyond the theatre.

And, of course, no trip to Russia is complete without trying the delicious blinis and borscht! (Although, I must admit, Meg, bless her heart, is a bit of a fussy eater and only nibbled at the blinis.)

Leaving Moscow, I felt an indescribable feeling of fulfillment. I had experienced the ballet scene in the heart of its birth, and it was an experience I will treasure forever!

I have such an insatiable thirst to learn and to see more, more, more. But this post is already quite long, so I will have to save my upcoming time-travel adventures for next time.

Now, be sure to check out the "Pink Tutu Performances" section on our website. You can find some wonderful, world-renowned shows happening near you – don’t be afraid to try something new and immerse yourselves in the wonder of ballet!
