Hello my dearest ballet bunnies! It's your favourite pink tutu-clad time traveller, Emma, here, and I'm bursting with excitement to share another incredible adventure from my travels through time!
This month, I found myself whisked away to the bustling year of 1811, on my trusty steed, Magic Meg, the most magnificent pink shimmering Shire horse you could imagine (with golden hooves and a flowing white mane and tail, of course!)
It's been a while since I ventured into the Regency era, and let me tell you, it was a truly fascinating trip!
We landed in the heart of London, and I immediately donned my new silk pink tutu - with layers of shimmering tulle, of course! The shops were crammed with all sorts of fabulous creations. Imagine, darling, fabrics like satin, velvet, lace, and even the earliest forms of silk netting, perfect for adorning the most glamorous of tutus! My bag was soon brimming with delightful fabrics and stories from the time, all thanks to my ever-trustworthy leather rucksack.
Now, let me tell you a little about the ballet scene back then:
1811 was a particularly exciting year for ballet in London. At the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, “Cinderella,” was all the rage, complete with sparkling sets and a fantastic cast of talented dancers. I'd say that was the show to see, though you'd also be well-served attending The Noble Savage at the Covent Garden Theatre, which was all the rage with its exotic costumes and thrilling dance numbers!
Regency Romance
The costumes at both venues were an absolute dream! Long, flowing skirts and elaborate bodices graced the women, and the men looked dashing in their velvet coats and breeches. My, oh my, the fashion back then was utterly enchanting!
But alas, the ladies of the time were constrained by their corsets and weren't quite embracing the free-flowing grace and elegance of modern ballet! So much for them flaunting their beautiful moves in the prettiest pink tutus!
Oh, how I yearned to set the time traveller trend back then, encourage a bit of 'free the bosom, ladies' and introduce them to the glory of the pink tutu. Perhaps, with a touch of time-travelling magic, I could bring some of our modern style back with me and maybe give those regency women a little dance inspiration? Imagine it: a sea of shimmering pink tutus gracing the elegant ballrooms and bustling London streets. What a vision, wouldn't you say?
Ballet and Beyond
Oh, the excitement doesn't end there! 1811 saw the premiere of La Fille Mal Gardée, which is still performed today! Now, how exciting is that? Even back then, the passion for ballet was as strong as it is today!
Of course, no time travel trip is complete without indulging in a bit of indulgence. London was the centre of all things fashionable. The best tailors and seamstresses were crafting exquisite pieces, and I couldn't resist adding to my growing collection of pink tutus. Oh, what treasures I found! Silk, lace, even satin ribbon with little sequins on it. Absolutely fabulous! And while I was at it, I picked up a few items to help me sew new additions to my personal tutu collection.
And who would have thought that in 1811, you could enjoy a trip to the newly-built Regent's Park! This magnificent expanse of parkland was a wonderful retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city. Magic Meg was thrilled, too. And while we weren't exactly galloping through fields of buttercups (it wasn't quite spring yet!), we had a delightful picnic amongst the majestic trees!
This whole time travel thing, it truly is a feast for the senses! Each era brings a new flavour, a new experience, a new opportunity to celebrate all things ballet.
Stay tuned, darling dears, as my next time travel adventure will see me step back in time even further. I'm already feeling excited to see what awaits us. I hope you are, too.
Until then, keep twirling, and remember, in every era, in every corner of the world, there's a pink tutu waiting to be worn!
