Hello lovelies, and welcome back to another instalment of my Pink Tutu Time Travels! This month, I’ve packed my pink sequined rucksack full of excitement as I'm taking you on a journey to a very special date in history – June 2011! And let me tell you, my darling readers, there's plenty of captivating ballet history to uncover!
This month, I had the absolute pleasure of soaring through time on Magic Meg's back, our lovely pink shire horse who, as always, had her sparkling golden hooves and white mane and tail looking absolutely magnificent. It's just not time travel without a little sparkle, is it?
As you all know, I simply cannot resist a chance to catch a show or two whenever I find myself whisked away in time. This June, the ballet world was brimming with incredible performances! The Royal Ballet in London were showing off their graceful skills in a mesmerising performance of Giselle. Meanwhile, the Bolshoi Ballet was in the midst of their impressive production of Swan Lake in Moscow, their every movement making the iconic work even more enchanting. And speaking of enchantment, the Kirov Ballet in St. Petersburg were also captivating audiences with La Bayadère - an exquisite tale of love, betrayal, and beautiful dance. I felt so lucky to have seen all three of these performances!
Speaking of performances, you lovely lot know that my time travelling is all funded through my ballet performances, and oh my goodness, did we have some lovely evenings in June! Just last night, we put on a fabulous show of "Swan Lake" here in Derbyshire, the costumes positively shimmered under the stage lights and our audience were completely swept away by the magic. I even had a dear lady approach me afterwards saying my pink tutu had made her feel like she could fly. Honestly, sometimes all it takes is a bit of colour and some magical movement, you know?
Before we move on, I simply must discuss fashion. And my dear readers, June 2011 was a veritable feast for the eyes! In the fashion world, the gorgeous geometric shapes and colour palettes of the Art Deco movement were making a major comeback, and that definitely translated to ballet costumes too. Imagine: luxurious silk tutus in bold geometric patterns with swathes of vivid colours like emerald green, fiery orange, and even shocking pink! Absolutely dazzling!
In between hopping from theatre to theatre and indulging in some serious fashion shopping – one can't forget to update the ballet wardrobe! - I made time to immerse myself in the wonderful world of ballet history. Oh, the stories! Did you know that back in 19th century Russia, ballet schools for young ladies were springing up everywhere? It was an incredibly exciting time, with aspiring ballerinas training with intense dedication and pushing the boundaries of what was considered possible in ballet technique.
What made my journey even more special was stumbling upon a vintage ballet journal from June 1911, 100 years before my trip! I was practically buzzing with excitement. It talked about the changing landscape of ballet, the growing interest in contemporary dance and its departure from the rigid classical tradition. I immediately jotted down all these fascinating details in my leather rucksack, determined to bring these hidden treasures of ballet history to light for my dear readers.
You know, sometimes, I have a hard time choosing which historical time to visit because there’s so much beauty to discover in ballet throughout the ages! But something about this June 2011 journey really touched me. Perhaps it was seeing the sheer passion and commitment of those performers or the way the contemporary ballet movement was bursting into life, brimming with innovation and creativity. It was all so inspiring, making me believe that anything is possible with a little imagination and a sprinkle of pink magic.
Well, lovelies, my time with Magic Meg for June has come to a close, but I’ll be back with you all next month for another delightful journey through ballet history! Don’t forget, I’m here to encourage every one of you to join me in this journey of pink-tutu fuelled adventure. Whether it's in a dance studio or a theatre, or just in your imagination, let’s all celebrate the timeless magic of ballet.
Until next time, dear readers, may your lives be as vibrant and beautiful as a perfectly spun pink tutu!
Love,
Emma
