Hello my darlings! Emma here, your trusty tutu-clad time-traveller, back with another whirl through the wondrous world of ballet history! This month, I'm swapping the December chill for the festive warmth of Christmas past, with a delightful December jaunt through time!
It's officially the season of sparkle and sugarplums, and my oh my, the ballet world is positively buzzing! My lovely Magic Meg, the pinkest, most magical shire you ever did see, is already prepped for our journey - all polished hooves, gleaming mane and tail, and a pink saddle ready for action! Her coat is practically glowing! And she's wearing a little red ribbon too - because every Christmas deserves a touch of red!
Before we get whisked away, I just HAVE to tell you about the incredible pink tutu I've picked out for this month's trip! It's a real show-stopper, with delicate layers of the most luscious pink tulle, accented by shimmering gold sequins and a hint of glittering snowflake detail. It's going to look positively festive against the backdrop of Christmas cheer!
So, buckle up your tutus, my dears! It's time for a Christmas ballet bonanza! This month, we're heading to 12th December, 2014, a time when the ballet world was absolutely alight with seasonal delights!
December 2014 - The Heart of the SeasonBack in December 2014, the world was prepping for Christmas, and the ballet world was no different! All around the globe, beautiful performances were unfolding. In London, the Royal Ballet was delighting audiences with a stunning rendition of 'The Nutcracker,' complete with a grand and magical set and Tchaikovsky’s glorious score. This year, however, there was a particularly special guest joining the performance - none other than my personal idol, Darcey Bussell! A dazzling star in her own right, Darcey made this Christmas performance even more magical!
Over in New York, the New York City Ballet were presenting their own breathtaking version of ‘The Nutcracker,’ a masterpiece of beauty and artistry. This was a particularly momentous production, celebrating a phenomenal 68 years of dazzling ballet! The whole atmosphere in New York must have been pure Christmas magic!
And in Paris, where ballet always seems to be waltzing into the heart of my heart, the Palais Garnier was the scene for ‘Giselle’ – an ethereal story of love and loss, wrapped in the most beautiful dance. The intricate movements, the passion, the heartbreaking moments - all the more poignant around Christmas time, if you ask me.
You know I love nothing more than a bit of festive fashion - and what’s more fabulous than Christmas ballet outfits? From sparkling tiaras to shimmering costumes, those festive looks from 2014 really caught my eye! I’ve actually got my hands on a lovely little ballet programme from ‘The Nutcracker’ that year! Imagine - that’s like holding a piece of December 2014 history in my hands!
Backstage at The Royal BalletYou see, there was something incredibly exciting about ballet in December 2014 - the air was filled with anticipation for the holiday season! The studios bustled with rehearsals, costumes were prepped with love and care, and the sound of Tchaikovsky and Christmas tunes mingled with the joyful chatter of the dancers. I have to confess, a part of me was utterly enraptured by it all, feeling the spirit of Christmas ballet through every movement!
I even snuck a peek into a practice room during a 'Nutcracker' rehearsal - it was positively bursting with sugar plum delight! The dancers’ movements were as delicate and sweet as spun sugar. They practiced those breathtaking leaps and intricate turns with precision and grace, and there were smiles all around - the sheer joy of sharing Christmas ballet together. I had to capture that memory in my leather rucksack, you know!
Of course, I had to sneak into a performance or two to feel that Christmas magic for myself! There is simply nothing quite like sitting in the dark theatre, feeling the electricity of a packed house, the excitement of a live orchestra… then the curtains rise and you’re swept away into a world of enchantment!
It’s in these moments, amidst the swirling twirls, graceful leaps, and heartfelt emotions that my heart swells with sheer joy. Ballet, especially during the Christmas season, feels truly special. I felt like a part of something incredibly powerful - a story unfolding, dreams being danced, and joy spreading from the stage to the very last seat in the theatre!
Finding Pink Tutus in the PastWhat was I collecting in December 2014? I know this may seem silly, but I wanted to find a pink tutu from the era. Now, my dearest dears, I wasn't looking for a 'pink' pink like mine – think more pale pink, dusty rose, almost peach-like colours! I find the muted pinks of the past incredibly romantic. So, I spent some time combing through vintage shops and antique markets - nothing's more delightful than a hunt for those forgotten ballet gems. I was delighted to find a lovely pale pink ballet dress at a lovely little antique shop in London - it’s actually going to be my next ballet outfit! I imagine that little pink dress, swaying and swirling through the streets of December 2014 London, as enchanting as a Christmas fairy!
Christmas wouldn’t be Christmas without some festive fashion! You know I'm all about sparkle and shimmer, and this season never disappoints! I found a beautiful little velvet clutch adorned with twinkling silver snowflakes – perfect for those fancy December gala events!
And let’s not forget my love for beautiful ballet shoes! I’ve got my eyes on some truly elegant velvet slippers that a charming shopkeeper showed me - perfect for the holiday season, wouldn't you agree?
Now, this is a time travel tip for all you budding pink tutu warriors! When looking for vintage items, try vintage markets - they’re full of delightful treasures from all eras! But remember to be careful with fabrics, you never know what little moths might have had their eye on those lovely vintage gems! And don’t be afraid to bargain! I can often talk those charming vendors down with a few well-chosen compliments - and, perhaps, a promise to wear my newest pink tutu with great pride!
Christmas Magic EverywhereHonestly, my darlings, my time in December 2014 felt as magical as a dusting of fairy snow! The Christmas spirit was in the air, everywhere you looked. The warm glow of fairy lights, the excited chatter of shoppers, the sweet smell of roasting chestnuts and cinnamon... all added up to a truly magical feeling!
And even if my horse Magic Meg found the reindeer decorations rather overwhelming, we all had a wonderful time! She's as much of a fashionista as me, so the Christmas decorations certainly appealed to her taste. She even gave the occasional excited snort!
