Hello my lovely ballerina bunnies! It's Emma here, your favourite pink-tutu clad time-travelling ballerina. It's the 25th of January, 2025, and oh my goodness, you wouldn't believe what adventures Magic Meg and I have had! Buckle up, darlings, because this journey was positively bursting with tutus and glamour!
As I said last month, this January we're celebrating the beauty and history of ballet by taking a closer look at a pivotal date in the art form's story: the 25th of January! This year, we're going back a few centuries, ladies! Our magical steed Magic Meg is whinnying excitedly, impatient to prance back to the 1700s, so I'll tell you all about it!
It was an absolute whirlwind, as always. Magic Meg's hooves are as fast as lightning, so it was a mere blink of an eye before we found ourselves standing on a bustling Parisian street. Just a tiny bit of fog to add to the enchantment, which, as every ballerina knows, makes everything look even more elegant. My pink tutu fluttered against the wind as we hurried to our destination: The Paris Opéra!
The year is 1720, and ladies, what a time to be a ballerina! We arrived just in time to see the exquisite Ballet de l’Opéra perform “Les Caractères de la danse.” You just had to be there, darling! They used the French Court Ballroom as a stage! Such opulence, such grandeur, and such intricate choreography. Imagine it: courtiers decked out in finery, ladies in swirling skirts, the shimmer of silk, the gleam of chandeliers. And there we were, amidst the buzz and bustle, witnessing the origins of ballet in France. Just like watching a story come to life in a beautifully written book.
Of course, Magic Meg and I wouldn’t dream of attending a historical ballet performance without the perfect ensemble. I went all out with my pinkest of pink tutus and sparkling diamante hair accessories. Honestly, the shimmering spectacle was enough to bring a tear to my eye! After the show, we slipped into the quaint Parisian café nearby. Oh, the smells and sounds of it all - warm pastries, delicious coffee, the chattering of local ladies in the prettiest dresses, and of course, ballet enthusiasts. I couldn’t help but grab a pastry and coffee, which were absolutely divine!
My rucksack is already filling up, my lovelies! This time I nabbed an old pamphlet advertising the performance we saw and some faded, delicately hand-stitched lace that was likely part of a dancer's costume from the time period! It’s so inspiring to think that I am literally carrying a piece of history on my back.
You know, it's remarkable to consider the journey that ballet has taken from the intricate court dances of the 1700s to the magnificent and expressive art form we know and love today. The elegant, sweeping movements, the carefully constructed steps, the powerful stories conveyed through each plié and arabesque - it’s a truly incredible art form.
Speaking of stories, remember my website, pink-tutu.com? You’ll be thrilled to hear that, to celebrate the grand opening of the new Bolshoi Theatre, there is a captivating film premiere this year - Bolshoi, directed by Valerian Borovchik. This cinematic masterpiece tells the tale of the ballet world, full of drama and romance. We’re planning a visit to see it - the movie looks utterly delightful!
Oh, before I forget! My darlings, I implore you: wear a pink tutu today! Let’s make a global ballet statement and spread a wave of joy and inspiration, inspired by those remarkable ballet dancers from centuries past! Let us wear pink tutus, feel confident, and enjoy the wonders of dance and expression!
Until next time, my ballerina bunnies! And, remember - never stop twirling!
Yours in ballet,
Emma, The Pink Tutu Ballerina
