Hello darlings! Emma here, your favourite pink tutu-wearing time traveller, reporting live from...well, actually, I'm not going to spoil the surprise! Let's just say I've found myself back in a truly fabulous era and it's dripping in ballet! This month, my magical pink steed, Meg, galloped me through the shimmering mists of time to… March 2029!
Now, you may be thinking, "Emma, isn't that just last month?!" Well, you'd be right, BUT this is a truly momentous period for ballet history. As any true aficionado knows, we're living in a Golden Age for our beloved art form, and 2029 just marks another high point in this sparkling journey.
London Calling: This month saw the launch of the Royal Ballet's breathtaking production of The Rite of Spring at the newly renovated Royal Opera House. It was a whirlwind of contemporary choreography and avant-garde designs, just as Stravinsky envisioned! The new lighting system was truly mind-blowing, with kaleidoscopic shades painting the stage. I simply couldn't resist slipping on a sparkly fuchsia tutu and pirouetting through the crowds outside, celebrating the grand re-opening.
The Stars of New York: Across the pond, in the dazzling city of New York, a sensational new company, "Ballet Urban", was performing at the iconic Lincoln Center. This innovative ensemble brings a bold fusion of hip-hop and ballet, making for a high-octane experience. Think tutus paired with street wear - it's an amazing spectacle that will make you want to break out your best high-energy leaps!
From Paris with Love: And of course, the French are always leading the way with ballet, aren't they? Paris saw a triumphant debut of a brand new production by Ballet de l'Opéra National, titled Dreamscapes. It's a poetic and visually stunning masterpiece exploring themes of fantasy and dreams through breathtaking choreography and avant-garde costuming. Imagine soft, flowing tutus inspired by clouds, and delicate movement evocative of a tranquil moonlit garden. It's enough to make you swoon!
Oh, Meg, My Faithful Steed: As I always do, I've taken some treasures back with me in my leather rucksack. A beautifully beaded tutu inspired by Dreamscapes, a pamphlet with an interview with Ballet Urban's star dancer (she wears the coolest pink bomber jacket!) and some amazing photos of the Rite of Spring performance.
And a Blast From the Past...: You know how much I adore history, so naturally I had to take a peek into some earlier ballet eras. March 2029 wasn't only about contemporary brilliance; it also had a beautiful link to the past. There was an exhibition dedicated to the legendary Nijinsky at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. The collection of costumes, posters and personal memorabilia painted such a vivid portrait of this revolutionary dancer. I must say, his satin pink costume, (it’s actually in the V&A!), gave me major inspiration for my new tutu creation – watch out for it, it’ll be available on my website very soon!
Time Travel Tips: Remember darlings, when it comes to time travel, even though it’s just a short trip to the past or future, the most important thing is to respect the time and the people. I always pack my signature pink tutu for special occasions, it works wonders in both the present and the past - but be sure to have something comfortable too! It’s also always a good idea to pack a ballet skirt - something light and floaty so you can be prepared for anything! Remember, fashion and ballet are powerful, even in time travel.
