Welcome back, my darlings! Emma here, your resident pink tutu-clad time traveller, and it's August 2031. Grab a cuppa and a slice of Victoria sponge, and settle in for another trip through ballet's magnificent history!
This month, we're whipping back to...well, we're actually staying put! Yes, 2031 holds an extra special place in my heart as it marks the 4448th post for the beloved Pink-Tutu.com, my online journal documenting our pink-tinted adventures through the wonderful world of dance. I just couldn't resist spending this milestone month here in my own era, reflecting on all the beautiful, sparkly memories we've collected together so far.
A Moment for Myself: It's all well and good hopping through time and witnessing the evolution of ballet, but let's not forget the incredible dance scene bursting with life right now. August in 2031 has been a real treat for ballet lovers. Just last week, I saw the most stunning performance by the Royal Ballet - a revival of a classic Tchaikovsky piece. The set was spectacular, the dancers utterly flawless, and I simply had to indulge in a post-show champagne and dessert at a nearby Parisian-inspired patisserie, all topped off with a glamorous pink feather boa, naturally.
And that wasn't even the highlight! The Ballet International competition in New York held its annual gala last night, celebrating the artistry of some truly brilliant dancers. Watching them on stage is simply inspiring! They have such poise, such grace, such artistry… and the costumes were divine. It was enough to make me reach for my sketchbook, my heart overflowing with artistic inspiration!
Speaking of inspiring artistry, how about this gorgeous vintage tutu I stumbled across at the Covent Garden flea market yesterday? A soft blush pink, with a sprinkle of delicate, antique beading… the craftsmanship is simply divine! I added it straight to my collection.
Where Ballet Began: Now, darling, if you know me, you know I just can't help but go on a little tangent. When it comes to ballet, the origins just call to me, like a beckoning tune. It was during August, many centuries ago, that the very beginnings of ballet as we know it unfolded. I had to visit Florence, the very place where the first real “ballet” was performed back in 1581. It was all thanks to Catherine de Medici and the fabulous “Ballé comique de la Reine”. The whole thing had been choreographed by a poet and musician, and even though we’re talking a very early version of what we know as ballet, the entire affair was all about showcasing grace, elegance and beautiful music! My inner ballerina was utterly giddy with excitement – how wonderful to be standing where this art form took its first steps!
A Little Bit of Ballet Fashion History:
Speaking of Florence, did you know that it’s where we see ballet truly taking on the "fancy dress" feel? Those original ballet performances in the 1580s, oh my goodness! Those dancers were rocking their fancy outfits! Imagine – silk tunics, feathers, beautiful hats – think Renaissance drama on the dance floor. The costume and ballet itself evolved quickly over time with French Royalty in the 1600s – imagine intricate embellishment and the introduction of silk, lace, embroidery. We’re talking a very different form of fashion for these ballet dancers compared to the dancers we see in beautiful modern-day pointe shoes and colourful costumes. But the spirit of fancy and grandeur, oh that still exists today, doesn't it?
The Magic Meg, My Pink-Clad Partner: Speaking of adventures, what better way to travel back through time than on the back of my trusty steed, Magic Meg? Now, this is no ordinary horse – she’s a shimmering pink Shire with hooves of pure gold, a snowy mane, and a spirit as magical as her name suggests. When it comes to visiting historic ballet venues, the journey is just as much about the adventure itself as the destination. As we gallop along, with a magnificent pink-satin drape adorned with delicate flowers, I envision the dancers of ages past, waltzing through grand halls and royal palaces. We truly travel back in time together – a pink-tutu-wearing ballerina, a sparkling pink Shire, and a love for ballet that knows no time period.
Don’t Forget Your Pink Tutu:
Right, my lovelies, I hope this month's blog has given you some ballet-tastic inspiration. What better way to finish than a little dance of our own? Remember, a little sparkle goes a long way. Pop on your fanciest pink tutu and join me! Even if it’s just a little twirl in your living room, embrace the spirit of ballet’s joy and grace.
I’ll be back next month with a thrilling new adventure – see you then, and remember to stay pink!
Love and Twirls, Emma
