Cinderella: A Timeless Tale Brought to Life Through Prokofiev's Magic
Prokofiev’s Cinderella is a ballet that speaks to every age. The timeless fairytale resonates with both children and adults, reminding us that dreams can come true with courage and a little bit of magic. This beloved ballet, set to Prokofiev’s hauntingly beautiful and spirited score, has captivated audiences for generations. The story of a young woman’s journey from rags to riches, driven by a profound belief in kindness, has become an iconic symbol of hope. The choreography, masterful and emotive, blends classic balletic techniques with imaginative, fairytale-esque movements. It allows for captivating storytelling through each turn and arabesque. The delicate beauty and athletic grace of the dancers effortlessly transform this timeless story into an enchanting experience.
The Score: A Symphony of Magic and Wonder
The essence of Cinderella lies within its score. Prokofiev’s musical genius painted the emotions and nuances of the story in an intricate tapestry of sounds. His music pulsates with energy and delight, seamlessly blending the delicate beauty of Cinderella’s dreamlike world with the forceful power of the Prince and the playful mischievousness of the Stepmother and her daughters. It's no surprise that many of Prokofiev's pieces are used in commercials and television programs due to the versatility and catchy melodies. One particular favourite, which encapsulates the pure delight and hope associated with Cinderella’s story, is the 'Waltz.' It is an elegant piece that brings to mind the swirling gowns and magical moments of the grand ball. This elegant waltz creates an ethereal, magical atmosphere as Cinderella’s dreams become reality. There’s also the vibrant, rhythmically complex 'Gallop', a powerful display of energy and celebration which brings the grandeur of the ball and the magic of the Prince's arrival into the hearts of the audience. Prokofiev also utilizes masterful use of contrasting dynamics to embody Cinderella's sorrow and helplessness in moments of conflict, with an air of melancholy expressed through subtle, introspective melodies.
The Dance: Weaving Stories with Each Turn
Ashton’s choreography captures the innocence and elegance of Cinderella, perfectly highlighting the duality of her spirit. His choreography embodies the story’s message of kindness and determination while emphasizing the contrasting personalities within the narrative. From the delicate steps and graceful arabesques that express Cinderella's gentle soul, to the more dramatic leaps and dynamic movements that represent her strength and unwavering spirit. I especially love the contrast he manages to create between Cinderella and her stepmother's contrasting styles - one embodies poise and beauty, while the other conveys crassness and entitlement, expertly conveying the personalities of the characters through physical language.
Performances: Transforming the Characters Into Flesh and Bone
While the music and choreography provide the framework, the dancers truly breathe life into these roles. The captivating grace of a principal dancer as Cinderella is enough to make the audience sigh. Witnessing her elegant performance, it's clear to see she understands that this young woman embodies hope and resilience in the face of hardship. And the Prince is equally as captivating - embodying charm and strength with just a tilt of his head. I was lucky enough to watch Alina Cojocaru in this role a few years back. Her lightness, purity of movement and expressive portrayal of the emotional spectrum felt so natural. Seeing a dancer express her character’s joy as she arrives at the ball, and then her utter despondency as her dream slips away through her own inhibitions was magical. Cojocaru created such a beautiful performance. This delicate dance performance contrasted with the almost exaggerated caricature of the stepmother - played by a formidable and comedically skilled character dancer - who was masterful in showcasing the bitterness and greed that drives her, giving us glimpses of the jealousy fueling the cruelty behind the character. Each role, be it the delicate grace of Cinderella, the princely strength of the prince, or the over-the-top mischief of the stepmother, adds a unique thread to the tapestry of this timeless tale.
A Ballet That Transcends Time
Cinderella isn’t just a ballet – it’s an experience. The blend of intricate choreography and an emotive musical score delivers a potent experience that makes the audience deeply engaged in Cinderella’s journey. With each captivating dance and powerful melody, Cinderella reminds us that every heart carries the potential for love, resilience, and ultimate triumph. Each performance is a testament to the enduring power of ballet as an art form that allows stories to dance in our imaginations, resonating within our hearts long after the curtains close. Whether a newcomer to the ballet or a seasoned aficionado, Cinderella, in all its enchanting and captivating forms, offers a profound reminder of the enduring power of love, kindness, and belief in the impossible.
Reflections On Cinderella: Beyond the Stage
My personal connection with Cinderella is a deeper one. Watching this ballet was a formative moment in my dance journey. I was just starting my formal ballet training when I was fortunate to see a performance in a small, provincial theatre. As I sat captivated by the spectacle of the ball, my imagination ignited. The magic of that moment continues to motivate me, both as a dancer and as a person. This was a dance that wasn't just a show – it was an inspiration. I remember being deeply moved by the emotional journey of the characters. Their hopes and struggles resonated with me as a young aspiring dancer.
I think my love for the story also stems from an association with childhood. When you're a young girl watching that tale play out, it ignites a belief in a kind of magic, and maybe in something bigger than yourself. As I progressed through the demanding and arduous path of dance training, I always felt a comforting connection with Cinderella's perseverance in the face of hardship and her constant, unwavering belief in a better future.
Cinderella is a ballet that speaks to a larger truth - that every person has the capacity for self-belief and a pursuit of dreams. Despite adversity, Cinderella reminds us that inner strength, perseverance and hope can move mountains. When we feel downtrodden or discouraged, remembering that story reminds us of the possibility of transformative change, as well as the power to shape our own happiness and future, which is a powerful reminder of what we're capable of.
Beyond the stunning artistry and poignant storytelling of Prokofiev's music and Ashton’s choreography, Cinderella is a story of the power of human spirit. It is a ballet that will leave you not only enchanted by the magic of its performance, but with a renewed hope for your own life journey.

The set designer is responsible for transporting audiences to a magical fairytale world. Every intricate detail - be it the majestic palace, the quaint cottage, or the elegant ballrooms - all contribute to creating the visual essence of Cinderella's story.
