Catherine Hurlin: A Life in Pointe Shoes

My earliest memory of dancing is of being three years old, twirling around our living room in my tiny pink tutu, mimicking the ballerinas I saw on television. It was the stuff of fairytales, a world of elegance, grace, and beauty that I longed to inhabit. As I grew older, that childhood fantasy morphed into an unwavering passion, an undeniable calling. It was ballet, and I knew with absolute certainty that I was meant to dance.

My journey started in the quaint town of Littleton, Colorado, where I was born and raised. At the tender age of five, I began lessons at a local dance school, my heart skipping with excitement at every pirouette and grand jeté. I was fortunate to have been trained by Ms. Jane Peterson, a woman who not only nurtured my technical skills but also ignited a love for the artistry of ballet. She believed in my talent, pushed me to reach for greatness, and taught me that the magic of ballet went beyond just perfect form; it resided in the stories we told through our movement.

Those years in Littleton, filled with hours of tireless practice and the camaraderie of fellow dance enthusiasts, shaped me. I learned to navigate the challenges of a disciplined art form, embracing the discipline and dedication required to rise through the ranks. Yet, I wasn’t simply an automaton, mimicking steps and routines. I felt a deep connection to the music, to the emotions it evoked, and the stories it whispered. My own emotions poured into my performance, creating a unique synergy between technique and artistry.

At the age of thirteen, I took a life-altering leap of faith – a move to Washington, D.C., to join the prestigious Washington Ballet School. It was a significant transition, leaving the comfort of my family and friends to pursue a dream in a bustling metropolis. It was both daunting and exhilarating, a challenge that pushed me further than I thought possible. The training intensity escalated; I encountered some of the best dance teachers in the country, honing my technique under their expert eyes. I realised, perhaps for the first time, that my passion for dance wasn’t just a childish fantasy, but a powerful force driving me towards an ambitious goal.

Breaking into the Professional Arena

The Washington Ballet School became my second home. There, amidst the rigorous routines and fierce competition, I found my tribe. We were kindred spirits, young dreamers driven by the same intoxicating passion for the art form. In that environment, I discovered a fierce competitive spirit but also the value of supportive friendships, forged in the crucible of shared aspirations and struggles.

The culmination of my dedication came at sixteen, with my debut performance with the Washington Ballet Company in their annual production of ‘The Nutcracker’. The lights, the audience, the sheer beauty of the choreography – it was a sensory overload that cemented my resolve. This was my world, my raison d’être. I could imagine no other path for myself, no other pursuit that could bring me such joy and fulfillment.

My career at the Washington Ballet blossomed, steadily growing into roles of increasing responsibility. I relished the challenging repertoire – from the grace of Swan Lake to the fiery passion of Carmen. Each role was an opportunity to explore different facets of my artistry, to immerse myself in the character's emotions, and to weave a captivating narrative through my movement.

The first taste of international success arrived at the age of nineteen, when I was selected to compete in the prestigious Prix de Lausanne. This competition, a beacon for aspiring dancers worldwide, provided an incredible platform to showcase my skills before a panel of discerning international judges. Though I didn't clinch the top prize, my performance resonated, and I walked away with a scholarship, propelling me forward to an exciting next chapter in my journey.

A Global Adventure: Dancing on the World Stage

My international dance career took flight with the opportunity to join the prestigious Royal Ballet in London. This prestigious company was a dance legend, a dream destination for any ballerina. I found myself performing on the world-famous stage of the Royal Opera House, mesmerized by the historical grandeur, the iconic performances, and the extraordinary company of fellow dancers, each a master in their own right.

Being part of the Royal Ballet meant diving headfirst into a global ballet world, immersing myself in a diverse artistic culture. The company’s international dancers, each with their own background and approach, enriched the artistic discourse, fostering an environment of learning and growth.

There were challenges, naturally. Adapting to a new training regimen, working with different choreographers, and navigating the complexities of London life – a far cry from my small-town upbringing. But through these experiences, I discovered incredible strength and resilience within myself, traits that were fundamental to surviving and thriving in this competitive arena.

Over the next decade, I had the honour of performing on some of the world’s most famous stages, sharing the beauty of ballet with diverse audiences. I graced the grand opera houses of Paris, Vienna, Milan, and New York, bringing to life classical works such as Giselle, Swan Lake, and The Sleeping Beauty, along with contemporary pieces that pushed the boundaries of my artistry.

One particularly memorable experience involved performing the role of Juliet in ‘Romeo and Juliet’ in a historic production at the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow. The energy of the audience, the opulence of the venue, and the sheer depth of emotion in this timeless love story – it was a profound and transformative experience.

I realized that beyond the technical precision and elegant aesthetics, the magic of ballet resided in its power to move the human spirit. Onstage, I could evoke a kaleidoscope of emotions, sparking tears and laughter, creating shared experiences that transcended language barriers. It was a humbling and deeply fulfilling realization.

Challenges and Triumphs: Facing Setbacks with Grace

Life, of course, wasn't always a smooth journey. Ballet, by its very nature, demands immense physical dedication and commitment. The long hours of rigorous training, the relentless striving for perfection, and the vulnerability of putting your artistry on public display took their toll.

There were injuries, both minor and major, that threatened my career. An ankle sprain, a slipped disc, a hairline fracture – these were recurring nightmares that forced me to adapt, to embrace periods of rehabilitation and rebuild my physical strength, often grappling with anxieties and uncertainty. But I found strength in the unwavering support of my loved ones, my mentors, and my fellow dancers. Their encouragement and belief in me were my lifelines during these challenging moments.

I also faced self-doubt. The constant comparison to my peers, the pressure to stay on top of my game, the insecurities that arise when vulnerability is the essence of your craft – these were battles I fought within myself.

But each time, I emerged stronger. The adversity forged within me a resilience and determination I hadn't known I possessed. I learned to manage my physical limitations, to be resourceful in overcoming setbacks, and most importantly, to draw upon my inner strength to continue pushing boundaries and striving for excellence.

The Art of Story-telling: Finding My Voice

The world of ballet goes beyond perfect technique; it’s about storytelling. It’s about evoking emotion, drawing audiences into your narrative, making them feel the joy, the sorrow, the longing, the passion that drives each character.

It wasn’t just about the steps or the artistry. It was about channeling my inner voice, using my body as a conduit for expression. This realisation began with the challenges I faced – recovering from injuries, overcoming self-doubt. Those experiences weren't just hurdles, they were narratives I had to own, to make sense of.

I started journaling, reflecting on my journeys – from my early days in Colorado to the international stages I graced. I poured my thoughts and experiences onto paper, trying to make sense of my emotions, the struggles, and the triumphs. This introspective process unlocked a new dimension to my artistry. I discovered the power of using my platform, my experiences as a ballerina, to connect with a broader audience, to tell stories that resonated beyond the confines of the stage.

I also started exploring different avenues for expressing myself. I was invited to give talks about the challenges and triumphs of a dancer’s life, about finding passion and purpose amidst adversity. It was a new type of storytelling, using words and experiences instead of pirouettes and grand jetés. And I loved it. It felt like a natural progression, a continuation of the stories I had been telling on stage.

Life after Pointe Shoes: Embracing New Horizons

My body, like all bodies, had its limits. After 15 years as a professional ballerina, I decided to step off the stage, the final curtain call a poignant farewell to a career I had devoted myself to wholeheartedly. It wasn’t an easy decision, one fraught with conflicting emotions. But I knew that I had to be honest with myself and listen to my body. I wanted to explore other aspects of my artistry, to delve into new ventures with the same passion and commitment that had driven me on stage.

The transition from stage to everyday life wasn't without its challenges. The constant physical demands of ballet were ingrained in my being, a daily routine I had taken for granted. There were times when I felt adrift, unsure of where to channel the energy and focus I had dedicated to dance for so many years.

But those insecurities gave way to exciting new opportunities. I honed my skills as a writer, sharing my experiences in a memoir that has garnered accolades and sparked conversations about the unique challenges of a ballet dancer's life. I embarked on workshops and masterclasses, sharing my knowledge with aspiring dancers, igniting a passion for ballet in younger generations.

Leaving a Legacy: Inspiring Future Dancers

While I’m no longer performing on stage, the world of dance remains a source of immense joy and inspiration for me. My time as a ballerina has instilled in me a love for movement, for artistry, for the power of storytelling that transcends cultures and languages.

Through my writing, my speaking engagements, and my work with young dancers, I hope to share this passion, to illuminate the transformative power of ballet, and to encourage future generations to embrace the beauty and discipline of this captivating art form.

My story, like any dancer's, is a tapestry woven with threads of dedication, discipline, setbacks, and triumphs. It is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit, the power of passion, and the unwavering beauty of artistry.

But beyond the individual journey, I believe that my experiences, both on and off the stage, have allowed me to create something bigger than myself – a legacy of shared dreams, aspirations, and the unwavering pursuit of excellence that makes dance, in all its forms, such an extraordinary expression of the human spirit.
