Carla Köerbes: A Brazilian Ballerina's Journey The world of ballet, with its grace, elegance and demand for sheer physical and mental strength, has always held an allure for me. Growing up in the heart of Rio de Janeiro, my life was far removed from the disciplined world of the Bolshoi, or the polished performances of the Royal Ballet. My earliest memories are filled with the vibrant energy of the favelas, the rhythmic pulse of samba, and the scent of fresh fruit in the markets. But somewhere in those bustling streets, I found a different rhythm, a different energy. It began with the sight of a street performer, a lone ballerina on a makeshift stage, her movements fluid and compelling. Something in her graceful gestures, the way she seemed to dance with the air itself, captured my imagination. That moment, like a sudden spark, ignited a passion for ballet within me. My journey, however, wasn't a simple waltz into the world of pointe shoes and tutus. My family, although supportive, had limited means, and access to quality ballet instruction was scarce. My dedication, however, was boundless. Every spare moment I could snatch - between helping with chores, studying, and assisting in the family shop - was spent perfecting my pirouettes and honing my leaps. The tiny room that served as our family living space was also my dance studio. My tireless practice did not go unnoticed. A local dance teacher, Maria, recognised my talent and offered me a scholarship to her school. My training began at the age of seven, but it wasn't simply about the steps. Maria instilled in me the value of discipline, resilience, and artistic expression. Every lesson was a journey of self-discovery. As I progressed, my talent became more pronounced. By the age of 12, I had earned a scholarship to study in the city of São Paulo. Leaving home was bittersweet, but the prospect of training at a world-class ballet academy spurred me on. São Paulo was a world away from the vibrancy of Rio. The city's imposing architecture reflected the seriousness of the art form. The intensity of training in São Paulo was unparalleled, demanding every ounce of my physical and mental stamina. I trained with seasoned teachers who were strict but nurturing, their passion for ballet seeping into my very soul. Among my teachers was the renowned Russian choreographer, Irina Petrova. Her intense and passionate approach to dance, her emphasis on precision and the beauty of form, became instrumental in shaping my technique. It was in her studio that I realised the artistry and precision needed to truly embody the soul of the ballet. It was during these formative years in São Paulo that I encountered a crucial challenge – my growth spurt. Ballet, with its delicate demands on proportion and alignment, is often thrown off by rapid physical change. For many dancers, a growth spurt signifies the end of their dream. But my will was unyielding. I threw myself into extra training, mastering exercises that countered my body’s new proportions. My unwavering dedication, coupled with the unwavering support of my teachers and mentors, saw me through this crucial period. My determination was not to simply be a dancer; I aimed to be an exceptional one. At 17, after five years of dedicated training, I achieved my childhood dream - a position with the prestigious Brazilian National Ballet Company. This moment was a testament to my hard work, the sacrifices made by my family, and the invaluable guidance of my mentors. As a professional ballerina, I finally found myself at the heart of my passion. Each performance, from classical ballets like Swan Lake to contemporary pieces, was a celebration of my craft. The stage became my sanctuary, a place where I could channel emotions through physical movement and tell stories through the silent language of dance. My Artistic Journey: Beyond Technique Over the years, I've danced alongside legendary choreographers and seasoned performers, constantly expanding my artistic repertoire. While the demands of a professional dancer were intense, my life wasn't limited to rehearsals and performances. There were personal trials, triumphs, and a yearning for growth beyond the confines of the stage. I wanted to explore other avenues of creative expression, to broaden my artistic palette. My thirst for artistic knowledge led me to delve into the world of creative writing. I started writing poetry, my verses infused with the emotions, rhythms, and beauty of the ballet. The grace and expressiveness that I mastered on stage translated seamlessly onto paper, Each poem a reflection of my dance, a glimpse into my world. I was fortunate to find encouragement from a fellow dancer, an author who saw a poetic quality in my descriptions of my experiences. She urged me to pursue my passion for writing, inspiring me to venture into fiction and non-fiction. I found solace and expression through the written word, a perfect compliment to the demanding physicality of ballet. My first book, "The Rhythm of the Heart", was published when I was 23. It explored the trials, triumphs and dreams of young ballerinas striving for success. The novel, infused with the elegance and precision of ballet, touched on themes of perseverance, artistic passion, and the constant search for identity. My success as a writer wasn’t confined to the pages of my book. It helped me develop a different dimension to my artistry. The stage became a more immersive experience, fueled by the creative energies of my writing. My dance reflected the introspection and depth that I found in the written word, a captivating mix of grace, vulnerability, and power. My writing has further empowered my journey as a ballerina. It’s enabled me to communicate my experiences, both on and off the stage, to a broader audience. Through writing, I have become an advocate for young aspiring dancers, especially in the face of societal pressures and limitations. More Than a Dancer Over the years, my life has been woven with a thread of resilience and determination, with moments of sheer joy and profound reflection. It hasn’t been an easy journey, but it's been enriching and transformative. Through every step, leap, and arabesque, through every poem and story, I've grown as a dancer, an artist, and most importantly, as a human being. Ballet has taught me discipline, grace, and the importance of finding strength amidst adversity. My training honed my focus and cultivated an inner fire that has become the foundation for everything I've achieved. The resilience I’ve learned on the stage has guided me off stage, empowering me to face life's challenges with the same dedication and determination that fuelled my career. My experience has shaped a sense of empathy for my fellow dancers. I’ve become an active supporter of initiatives that foster ballet education and talent development, particularly in underserved communities. My mission has become not only to dance, but to inspire the next generation of dancers, to share my journey, my experiences, and my unwavering passion for ballet. Beyond the stage, I believe that the beauty and expression of dance are accessible to everyone. The beauty of ballet is in the way it encourages introspection and self-expression. It’s not just about perfectly executed pirouettes, but the emotions those movements convey. The heart of the ballet lies in the vulnerability and human emotion it portrays. The grace and beauty of dance can be seen in nature, in a gentle breeze swaying through a field of wheat, in the flow of water, and in the graceful movement of animals. I strive to find those same rhythms and flow in my life, whether I'm on stage, penning a story, or simply taking a mindful walk in nature. Ballet is not just a career for me; it’s a philosophy. It’s the foundation on which I’ve built my life, my creativity, and my sense of self. The lessons I’ve learned on the stage extend far beyond the realm of performance; they have equipped me to embrace the beauty and complexities of life with the same dedication, resilience, and grace.
