Iana Salenko: A Life in Dance
My earliest memory of dance is not on a stage, but in my grandmother's kitchen. We would gather after dinner, a motley crew of relatives buzzing with life. My aunt, with a mischievous twinkle in her eye, would turn up the radio and suddenly, our little space was transformed. I would twirl around, giggling, mimicking the steps of my elder cousins as they effortlessly swept across the worn wooden floor. The air thrummed with laughter, the clink of spoons against mugs, and the sweet melody of our shared love for music and movement.
It's strange, the way those seemingly insignificant moments form the bedrock of a dancer's life. It wasn't long before that joy, that uninhibited delight in dancing, found a more structured form. I was six when my parents, seeing my boundless energy and fascination with the graceful figures on the television, enrolled me in ballet classes at the Odessa National Opera and Ballet Theatre. At that age, a world of pointe shoes, barre work, and tutus seemed as magical and fantastical as any fairy tale.
The ballet studio, a haven of scent – a mixture of wood polish, rosin, and a subtle perfume of sweat - became my second home. Hours blurred as we practiced pliés, tendus, and pirouettes, each step a building block in constructing a future where artistry met rigorous discipline. The legendary Olga Konstantinovna Moiseeva, our demanding yet encouraging instructor, imbued us with the foundation of technique, an appreciation for the nuances of movement, and an unshakeable belief in the transformative power of ballet.
The years flew by, a blur of competitions, gruelling rehearsals, and the slow, meticulous honing of my skills. My peers became my family, bound by a shared dedication to our craft. The camaraderie of our ballet classes formed a powerful bond, one that extended beyond the studio walls and nurtured our growth as dancers and individuals.
But as I navigated the rigorous training, I became increasingly aware of the daunting reality that lies at the heart of any art form. Success wasn't guaranteed. Ballet is a demanding mistress. She requires dedication, unwavering perseverance, and a healthy dose of humility. The beauty on stage, the illusion of effortless grace, masks hours of sweat, discipline, and the constant struggle to reach for something greater, something more profound.
This became acutely apparent during my final year at the school. I auditioned for the coveted Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow. My heart pounding, my palms slick with nervous sweat, I performed to the best of my ability. Months of meticulous preparation culminated in that brief performance, my hopes and aspirations distilled into a single, unforgettable moment.
I was not selected. It was a painful rejection, a sharp lesson in the reality of dreams deferred. But amidst the disappointment, I recognised an opportunity. I felt a burgeoning urge to break free, to explore a different landscape, to step outside of the familiar, if daunting, path of traditional ballet.
And so, I left the Ukraine, venturing into the vast world of international dance. I spent time in Germany, soaking in the vibrant atmosphere of the Hamburg Ballet, immersing myself in a new style of choreography. The rigorous, almost architectural choreography of John Neumeier contrasted sharply with the classicism of the Russian school, forcing me to expand my movement vocabulary, challenge my limitations, and push myself further than I ever thought possible.
My journey took me further, across the Atlantic to New York City. I was enchanted by the city that never sleeps, by its energy, its relentless drive, and its boundless spirit of innovation. Here, at the New York City Ballet, I learned the delicate art of partnering, working alongside some of the world's finest male dancers. The legendary Jerome Robbins, the iconic Balanchine, the avant-garde choreography of Twyla Tharp - I immersed myself in these styles, learning from the masters and honing my own technique.
My time in New York proved to be a transformative period, forging within me a newfound sense of self-confidence and artistic awareness. I realised that the true magic of dance lies not solely in the mastery of technique, but in the expression of emotions, in the ability to communicate with the audience, to evoke a range of emotions and to transport them to another world, to another reality.
I embarked on a new phase, a phase of freedom and discovery. I sought out opportunities beyond the confines of conventional ballet, performing with independent companies, exploring a vast array of choreographers, pushing boundaries, experimenting with diverse styles of movement, even collaborating with musicians and visual artists.
One of my proudest achievements was co-founding the International Ballet Academy. Inspired by my own journey, I was determined to create a space where young dancers from around the world could flourish. The academy, based in Odessa, my beloved hometown, embodies my unwavering belief in the power of art to break down barriers and forge understanding across cultures.
In recent years, I've returned to the stage, though this time with a newfound perspective. I relish the chance to share my passion with younger audiences, to inspire a new generation of dancers. I also continue to work as a guest choreographer, blending my experience with classic ballet with elements of contemporary movement to create unique, visceral pieces that leave their mark on audiences.
The life of a dancer is not without its challenges. The physical demands of the art form, the relentless pressure to maintain a peak of fitness, the constant need to reinvent oneself – these are just some of the realities that dance students confront.
But I can confidently say, with the wisdom of hindsight, that these are challenges worth embracing. Ballet has gifted me a lifelong passion, a profound understanding of discipline, a language of expression, a platform to connect with people on a deeper level, and a way of living that embraces both beauty and adversity with unwavering dedication. I wouldn’t have it any other way.
As I write this, I realise that my story, like the story of every dancer, is a tapestry woven with both moments of triumph and moments of self-doubt. The threads are interconnected, inseparable. The art of dance demands that we embrace the entirety of our being, the triumphs and the flaws, the joy and the despair, the light and the darkness. It’s only in that honest and vulnerable space that the true essence of artistry is unveiled.
For a dancer, the journey never ends. Each step, each pirouette, each performance is an opportunity for self-discovery, for artistic growth, for a deeper connection with the profound power of movement and expression.
