Friday 11th September, 1998
Good morning, my lovely Tutu Twirlers! It's Friday, and you know what that means... it's time for another Pink Tutu Blog post! I'm currently sat on the train, hurtling towards the glorious city of London, my pink tulle skirt billowing around me like a cloud of sugary delight. I feel so ridiculously happy and excited, the anticipation buzzing through me like a high C. London, oh London, you beautiful, buzzing city, I am coming for you!
Today's adventure is going to be all about exploring, discovering, and soaking up the amazing energy of London. I'm hoping to catch a show in the West End (a girl can dream!), and maybe find a hidden vintage boutique or two. After all, a pink tutu always needs a good accessory, right? And of course, no trip to London would be complete without indulging in a delicious afternoon tea and a spot of people watching.
This week's travel funds have been earned thanks to a lovely performance of "Giselle" at the Derby Theatre. Let me tell you, my heart practically soared through the rafters, especially during the 'Mad Scene'. I can't recommend 'Giselle' enough if you haven't seen it. Those hauntingly beautiful movements, the tragedy and romance… perfection!
I've always felt that travelling by train is the best way to see the countryside. There's something magical about watching the landscape blur past the window, knowing you are heading towards a new adventure. I love seeing the sleepy towns and quaint villages whizz by, imagining the lives that unfold within them. Maybe I'll write a novel inspired by a village we just passed through... hmm, it's got potential.
Fashion Fiasco: My London Look
Let me tell you, finding the perfect outfit for a day of exploring London can be quite the challenge! But, I think I've struck gold. I've opted for my go-to "Pink Power" look:
- Tutu, obviously! Today I'm rocking a classic blush pink tulle tutu. It's soft and floaty, perfect for twirling amongst the throngs of Londoners.
- A vintage blouse: Found this gem at a little shop in Derby, it's a pretty lace blouse with delicate buttons, all in shades of lilac and ivory, adding a touch of whimsy to the look.
- A comfy cardigan: Just in case the weather turns chilly (it can get surprisingly chilly even in September!), I've layered on a cosy cable knit cardigan, with a bright pink lining to complement my tutu.
- Chic flats: I can't be doing with heels when I'm on the move all day! So, it's comfy and stylish flat shoes that are a must-have. These cream canvas ballerina pumps with a little pink bow add a delicate touch.
- The Pink Tutu Essentials: A mini backpack to carry all my essentials (including my trusty notebook and sketching pencils), and a pair of vintage sunglasses, just to add a bit of sass.
Now, the train is starting to pull into King's Cross, and my excitement is reaching a fever pitch. I can practically smell the aroma of freshly baked scones and see the twinkling lights of the West End beckoning me. Oh, the joys of London!
London Adventure: First Stop - A Ballet Fix!
We've arrived at King's Cross Station, a magical hub of activity. Stepping onto the platform is like entering a time capsule. It's full of that charming London quirk that I absolutely adore. I quickly take a couple of pictures before making my way to the Tube, I must tell you, the tube can get very hot, my tutu was feeling very much on display today.
London's Underground is an adventure all its own. You never know who you might encounter on the train: people on their way to work, families going on outings, tourists like myself with wide-eyed wonder, and perhaps even the odd performer or two. Today's trip was uneventful, which is exactly what I wanted for this journey.
But my ultimate goal was the Royal Opera House, I needed to get my fix of classical ballet, before I did any exploring. Nothing better than a trip to the ballet! It was a perfect blend of excitement and escapism, especially given how much ballet and tutus have been part of my life, my whole life. There’s something enchanting about the energy and precision of ballet. I always feel so lifted after a performance, and this one did not disappoint. They are showing ‘La Sylphide’, so enchanting, and such a romantic piece, if I didn't know better, I would have been dancing in the aisles!
The music, the sets, the dancing… a stunning display of talent and grace. I have a whole album on my iPod dedicated to the Royal Opera House recordings.
Second Stop: A Parisian Delight
From the Opera House I jumped onto the bus, just across the street. A couple of blocks down and the smell of baked bread, a sign, it had to be there. A French Patisserie - The most beautiful pastry display. I found the prettiest pink meringue cookies and an apple tart to be shared with my favourite family, The Jenkins. I met Mr Jenkins during one of my last trips, he found out that I was on my way, and as they live close by, and his daughter's love my blog and everything about pink, he insisted on meeting me at the Patisserie.
I got the perfect little souvenir from Paris! I absolutely adore these little bakeries. It really is such a treat and such a part of this wonderful London vibe, a true mixture of cultures and tastes.
Exploring Covent Garden: A Tutu Paradise!
I am now enjoying a scrumptious scone and a cup of Earl Grey tea. After the beautiful, classical, dreamy world of the ballet and The Royal Opera House - it's so nice to come into Covent Garden, an energetic buzz. I find the place so enchanting!
The air here is filled with music, the scent of blooming flowers, and the vibrant energy of street performers and artists. Covent Garden is just so... charming! And you can’t beat it, for my next shopping stop - you know I’m all about vintage finds - you just have to find them, they're like hidden gems - so Covent Garden's got it all, shops and boutiques, beautiful buildings and gardens...
As for my fashion finds for today: I spotted a wonderful vintage shop - I love me some vintage! Tucked away on the side of one of the quaint lanes that weave through Covent Garden, its window displayed a pink silk scarf with dainty floral details. Perfect, and it complements my tutu.
And a hat shop - an array of delightful headpieces. I was immediately drawn to a beautiful blush-pink velvet beret. The perfect accessory, it's stylish and comfortable at the same time.
I couldn't resist indulging in a little pink indulgence!
I found a cute stall that sells these beautiful floral hair clips - they are perfect for twirling! I found two of these clips and they go beautifully with my ballet pink, and pale pastel pink, and the blush velvet beret - just too much fun!
Dinner with the Jenkins
We're now in Mr Jenkins' home for dinner - he's prepared a lovely spread.
His daughter, Jessica, is getting me all caught up with everything that's happening with her latest fashion venture. She is starting to take part in her first fashion shows, it’s great she is so into the world of fashion - she’s really got a spark!
She is all about vibrant colors, textures, and a sprinkle of daring!
It’s such a pleasure to meet families like the Jenkins - you know that London’s a mix of the artistic and creative. I was invited here by them because their whole family just loved my Pink Tutu Blog! They all love the blog, that makes me so happy, my dream of getting everyone to wear a tutu may not be so outlandish after all! I've even convinced a few people to join the Pink Tutu Movement, and I'm starting to feel like this blog is making a real difference!
It's wonderful that my love for pink and tutus is being embraced. I love sharing this experience with people who like the blog - I believe it can make a difference. After all, tutus and pink represent fun and joy.
