Hello lovelies! It's Emma here, and you're reading my weekly Friday post from my London adventures. Today, the date is August 27th, 1999, and the city is buzzing with excitement. Honestly, it feels like every Friday in London is a day for exciting discoveries! This week I arrived by train, a journey which always sparks my imagination. I love the rhythm of the wheels on the track and the gentle sway of the carriages, not to mention the exciting anticipation of reaching a new destination. I could happily spend hours on trains, watching the scenery flit by, dreaming up stories for my next ballet piece.
But enough about my journey, let's get to the heart of London!
This week, I decided to explore some of the hidden gems tucked away in this bustling city. We all know the iconic sights: Big Ben, the Houses of Parliament, Buckingham Palace… they’re a sight to behold, and I always enjoy a stroll down the Mall, taking in the pageantry and the imposing presence of these historic buildings.
However, I always find myself seeking out the little nooks and crannies that offer a glimpse into the authentic spirit of the city. This time, it was all about Notting Hill!
Notting Hill has always been on my must-see list, and I was eager to experience the colourful houses, the vibrant Portobello Road Market, and soak up the charm of this iconic district. Now, let me tell you, the pastel-coloured buildings didn’t disappoint. It felt like I was stepping straight out of a fairytale. I took endless snaps, trying to capture the perfect photo with my pink tutu, of course, but I admit that every picture turned out even more adorable than I had imagined.
Portobello Road Market was a sensory overload! I could spend an entire day browsing the stalls, and still, I wouldn’t have seen it all. From vintage clothing and antique furniture to exotic spices and handmade jewellery, it was a treasure trove of unique finds. The smell of freshly baked pastries and roasted nuts wafted through the air, creating a symphony of aromas.
For a girl like me, a trip to a market like Portobello is heaven on earth! The vintage fashion section was a dream come true – beautiful brooches, retro sunglasses, and clothes I could wear in my next performance. And naturally, I snagged a couple of treasures - a charming little hat that would be perfect for my upcoming Parisian ballet routine and a vintage pink silk scarf for my next showstopper entrance. It’s the small things, darling!
Speaking of shows, after my shopping spree, I treated myself to a delightful treat at a charming little cafe near Notting Hill Gate. I found myself at a quaint little tea room nestled between rows of pretty, flower-filled balconies. Oh, I've never felt so romantic! This cosy cafe felt like the perfect place to enjoy a pot of English breakfast tea and a delicate slice of Victoria sponge cake. I must say, a delicious combination and the perfect pick-me-up before my evening adventure.
As the afternoon sunshine cascaded over London, it was time for the next part of my day – a visit to the London Coliseum to see a new show. Now, it’s a secret passion of mine – seeking out upcoming theatre shows and independent productions, particularly if they feature ballet or even contemporary dance. This week's show was “The Phantom of the Opera”, and I confess that the allure of this classic was too much for me to resist!
Now, for some of you, you may be thinking – why a musical when we're on the topic of ballet? Well, I can tell you it’s about so much more than just dance for me! You see, I love the storytelling, the theatricality, the power of expression that both forms offer. I adore that music can speak to our soul even when we don’t understand a word. It’s about the human condition, expressed through a spectrum of emotions and artistic brilliance.
The performance was exhilarating! The costumes were dazzling, the music was incredible, and the storytelling, captivating! It felt like magic coming to life on stage, and I swear I felt every emotion wash over me alongside the characters! Now, while I couldn’t see my favourite pink tutu, the intricate, layered costumes were impressive and breathtaking. It made me dream up ideas for future pieces and inspire my choreography for my own upcoming performance!
This week's performance was certainly an added bonus. This being London, however, it wouldn’t be a complete Friday night without an opportunity for some more shopping. After all, who needs dinner when you can spend an evening at Liberty’s?
This grand old department store is pure luxury, with a fascinating history. I love browsing their incredible fashion selections – a wonderland of colours, patterns, and textures. Every time I’m in London, a little part of me dreams of stepping into Liberty’s to pick out an elegant outfit to dance in on stage. It’s truly a palace of elegance, and there’s always something beautiful to be found.
This time I discovered the perfect pair of satin ballet shoes for my upcoming show, a pair with just the right amount of pink, to accentuate my tutu perfectly! Of course, this means I needed a new costume too – something that complements this new acquisition – perhaps a shimmering, full-skirted dress in the same pink shade. My imagination runs wild!
Well, I confess that London is full of temptations – so, by the time I boarded the train back to Derbyshire, my purse was considerably lighter. It wasn't the price of the train fare or even the treats at the tea room or even the shoes and scarf, but Liberty’s took their fair share. Ah, London you’re a dangerous enchantress.
Yet, as I snuggled into my seat, enjoying the familiar journey, a satisfied sigh escaped my lips. This week, I was reminded why London holds a special place in my heart. This city never ceases to inspire. Whether it’s exploring hidden corners, marvelling at historical landmarks, experiencing world-class performances, or indulging in fashion adventures, every trip is a feast for the senses and fuels my love of the theatrical!
Now, back to my dancing shoes, I’ve a ballet class tomorrow, but before I sign off, my darlings, don’t forget my favourite little saying – embrace your inner ballerina, even if it’s just a fleeting moment! Wear that pink tutu with pride, whether you're strolling down Notting Hill’s charming streets, exploring a London market, or just dancing around your kitchen! Let’s inspire each other to embrace our love of ballet, a pinch of fantasy, and the undeniable beauty of pink.
Until next week, stay pink, my darlings!
Lots of love,
Emma
