Pink Tutu Blog: London Calling! - #789

Friday 14th October 2011

Hello my darlings! It's your favourite pink tutu-clad blogger, Emma, and guess what? I'm in London! This week's post comes straight from the heart of the capital, a place that quite simply, gets me buzzing! The smell of warm bread from bakeries, the chatter of the crowds, the street performers, and most importantly, the theatre - all these things give London an almost magical quality. I travelled down by train, which as you know, is one of my favourite modes of transport - so relaxing and gives me a chance to soak up the countryside scenery.

London Calling, from the Ballet Stage

To get here, you might wonder, I was fortunate to secure a coveted role in a ballet production down in London last week! Performing is one of my absolute favourite things, but being able to use that passion to travel, that's the real magic!

Tutu Time in London: The Best Places for a Girly Afternoon

Right now, I'm tucked up in a charming little bed and breakfast in Bloomsbury. This part of town is just bursting with quaint cafes, charming shops and elegant Victorian buildings - absolutely perfect for a Pink Tutu afternoon. I must share some of my discoveries:

  • Fortnum & Mason: Ah, Fortnum's! What's not to love about a tea salon steeped in history? The elegant afternoon teas with their tiered platters of sandwiches, scones, and cakes are a must-do for anyone visiting London! The delicate teacups, the clinking of silver spoons, the hushed conversations - everything screams "London chic" and it is quite honestly a highlight of every visit.

  • Liberty London: Liberty is one of my go-to spots for quirky finds. They have beautiful fabrics, homeware, and even a lovely gift shop with beautiful hand-made trinkets, all tucked into the most wonderful department store! I love to wander the departments, browsing all the beautiful scarves, delicate jewellery and quirky knick-knacks.

  • Cath Kidston: My inner girl squeals at the sight of anything with Cath Kidston's signature prints! Whether it's the classic spots or the new floral patterns, it always seems to manage to blend a sweet and sophisticated feel - perfect for a ballerina's style!

    Ballet Dreams on Stage

Being in London without seeing a show is simply unthinkable! Tonight, I'm thrilled to be seeing the Royal Ballet's production of "Swan Lake". I'm a complete ballet nut, and this iconic piece holds such beauty and drama - I just know it's going to be a truly magical experience!

Where to See Ballet in London

While we're on the topic of ballet, here are a few other gems that have made my list for future trips:

  • The Royal Opera House: It's a London institution and boasts the most dazzling productions. This place feels truly opulent and it's a wonderful opportunity to dress up for the occasion!
  • The Sadler's Wells: A bit of a departure from the traditional grandeur of the Royal Opera House, the Sadler's Wells offers a contemporary twist with their performance schedule. They feature all sorts of different dance styles from contemporary ballet to hip hop, it's always a surprising and invigorating experience.
  • The London Coliseum: This one has it all! This fabulous theatre boasts the best of the English National Ballet, with its world class productions and beautiful settings - perfect for a night of captivating storytelling!

    Pink Tutu Fashion and Fun!

One of my favourite things to do is look for inspiration while shopping around the London fashion scene. You'll never find me walking into the same store twice - always something new and exciting! This trip, I’m trying to keep my wardrobe a bit more toned down (in terms of the vibrant hues) for an effortless-chic look. Still, I love to incorporate a little something extra - a blush pink silk scarf, or maybe some sparkling pink jewellery to make things extra special!

Ballet-Inspired Style for the Modern Girl

And you don't have to be a ballerina to wear a pink tutu! This trip, I'm embracing my feminine side, rocking my trusty ballerina bun, and adding a splash of pink with an array of chic outfits:

  • Tutus on the Town: Yes, I've gone out and about in a tutu (and a cashmere cardigan!), even for a trip to Covent Garden! Just find a tutu made with silk or lace, it instantly elevates the look to sophisticated!

  • Balletcore is Here: The beauty of a ballet skirt lies in its elegant silhouette and how easily it can be dressed up or down! Try pairing a white, black, or dusty pink ballerina skirt with a statement cardigan, a chic blouse or a cute fitted sweater for a cool but stylish look.

  • Embrace your Inner Princess: London has no shortage of chic and affordable high-street fashion! It's time to channel your inner royal and don an A-line skirt, a luxurious cashmere sweater or a feminine blouse for that timeless, polished look. Add a touch of pink to your lips with a bold berry lipstick and, hey presto, a London princess is born!

The Best Bites and Sweet Treats in London

Now, no day trip to London would be complete without a proper cuppa and a slice of cake. I’m talking about a quintessentially British, tea-room, china-cup kind of afternoon!

  • Ladurée: Ladurée is synonymous with delicate macarons. I am literally weak at the knees for those gorgeous meringue-based pastries. This cafe offers beautiful surroundings, excellent service and of course a perfect selection of teas to match your favourite macarons.

  • The Wolseley: This Art Deco cafe feels straight out of a classic film! The Wolseley boasts some of the most delicious and elegant afternoon tea sets you’ll find anywhere in London.

  • Peggy Porschen: Peggy Porschen is a sight for sore eyes and a haven for all things pretty! This cute pink cafe offers amazing cakes and cupcakes with incredibly decadent designs. Everything they serve is just about as perfect as can be, and I definitely recommend trying the Pink Velvet cake!

    Coming Soon! The Ballet Masterclass!

Remember those shoes you’ve been wanting? Or the tutu you’ve been eyeing? I'm doing something a little special, and this Friday, I’m bringing a brand new online Masterclass, "Dancing Your Dreams." It's an intimate class about the importance of following your dreams, inspired by my life journey. You can find out all about it on www.pink-tutu.com!

Till Next Week...

And with that, it's time to say “ciao” until next week! I’m sure you can tell, London’s really captured my heart! It's a magical place filled with so much life and creativity, and of course, no London trip would be complete without a dose of Pink Tutu magic. Until next Friday, remember to live, laugh and dance, my dears. And if you have any questions or recommendations, do leave a comment below! I love to hear from you all!
