Pink Tutu Milan: A Whirlwind of Style, Culture, and Pink, of Course! (Post #3)

Ciao bella! Emma here, your resident pink tutu-wearing ballerina, back from another magical adventure in the fashion capital of the world, Milano! It’s Wednesday, the 28th of June, 1995, and the sunshine here is almost as bright as my favourite pink tulle. This week's been a whirlwind of ballet, shopping, and exploring, and, as always, there’s been plenty of pink to go around.

Remember me mentioning how I’m funding my adventures through my ballet performances? Well, let me tell you, it's been a right rollercoaster this week.

Monday saw me taking a grandstand position, figuratively speaking, at the Teatro alla Scala, for an absolutely divine performance of Tchaikovsky’s "Swan Lake." It was so moving, so graceful, and so absolutely stunning that it practically brought tears to my eyes – happy ones, of course! Afterward, the buzzing energy of the city drew me in for an impromptu street performance, which was just the right dose of lighthearted fun. I felt the joy of dancing in my pink tutu under the twinkling streetlights, as the music washed over the crowds, all eyes twinkling back. That, my dears, is true magic!

On Tuesday, I found myself waltzing around in a little vintage shop just off the Piazza Duomo. It was a real treasure trove – vintage dresses in every shade of the rainbow, vintage ballet shoes begging to be worn, and an assortment of stunning hats that screamed "Moulin Rouge" from a mile away. Of course, my heart skipped a beat at the sight of a beautiful blush pink evening gown – I felt like I had to try it on. Honestly, I think the entire shop could have fit into that gown. The fabric was just the softest silk, and it was positively dripping with glamour. The only issue? It was way too expensive!

But my wallet wasn't disheartened for long. The train to Como, my favourite escape, arrived at midday, and off I went. A peaceful boat trip on Lake Como is just what my soul needed – that crystal-clear water and the breathtaking views of the mountains, absolutely magnificent! As I glided past picturesque villas, I felt a sudden urge to perform. I hopped out onto a deserted stretch of shoreline and performed my interpretation of "The Swan" for a delightful little group of ducks. A few tourists looked up with curious amusement, and I swear I heard someone exclaim "Magnifique!" It's the little things that truly make these journeys special.

Back in Milan by sunset, I found myself surrounded by the vibrant energy of a bustling street food market. The air was thick with the intoxicating aromas of fresh mozzarella, grilled sausage, and my favourite – a delectable pistachio gelato! After indulging my sweet tooth, I made my way to my favourite Italian cinema to watch “Alice in Wonderland” – such a treat, particularly in a vintage Italian cinema! The theatre itself was stunning, all plush velvet and gilded decorations, and it felt like stepping back in time. It reminded me that magic exists in the ordinary and that a little bit of wonder goes a long way.

It’s now Wednesday morning, and I’ve woken up to the tantalising smell of coffee and fresh croissants. After indulging in my favourite breakfast treat, I'm ready to face a whirlwind of exploration in the city that never sleeps! I'm heading out to the Brera Art Gallery for a little dose of Italian art. I can't wait to see what artistic gems I can uncover amongst those beautifully framed paintings and sculptures.

You know what, my dears? The city of Milan is filled with hidden treasures just waiting to be found. Whether it's an antique teacup, a beautiful vintage ballet dress, a slice of life in the back streets, or a dazzling show at the Opera house, this place truly captivates the heart. And you know, if you keep an eye out for the little wonders and the hidden gems, even a seemingly ordinary day can be transformed into a masterpiece!

And what are the lessons learned on this trip?

  • Always pack a pink tutu - You never know where it might take you, be it a street performance or a quick twirl in a stunning gown!
  • Never underestimate the magic of vintage shopping. There are true treasures waiting to be discovered – even a beautiful, blush pink evening gown you can’t afford, although you’ll never know unless you look!
  • A little touch of sparkle, a little touch of elegance, and a little touch of pink goes a long way.
  • Take time to breathe in the little moments, the beauty around you.

Now, dear readers, I need to go. The aroma of the city’s best pistachio gelato is calling my name, and this pink tutu is just begging for a dance!

Until next Monday, my darlings!

Lots of love and happy twirls, Emma, www.pink-tutu.com
