Pink Tutu Milan: Week 55 - Bonjour, Bella Milano!

Buongiorno, darling readers! It's your favourite pink tutu-clad ballerina, Emma, writing to you live from the fashion capital of the world – Milan, Italy! I simply cannot believe how lucky I am to be here. The city is brimming with so much excitement, from the delicious smells of coffee and fresh bread wafting through the streets to the symphony of chattering voices in a language I can only just barely understand (but I'm learning!).

This week, it’s all about Italy’s iconic style and glamour, and, of course, the magical world of ballet! I've had an absolute whirlwind of a time exploring the city's charming cafes, winding streets, and majestic buildings. Even the journey here from Derbyshire was a dream, hopping on the Eurostar, with its plush seats and window views that were like stepping into a cinematic landscape.

This week’s post marks number 55 on my Pink Tutu Milan blog, and every week I'm learning more about this vibrant city. My adventures here have definitely fuelled my passion for travel. Funding my journey is a real balancing act – I need to be savvy about stretching my pennies whilst fulfilling my need for beautiful things and seeing breath-taking performances. Thankfully, my dancing allows me to see the world – from performing in intimate theatres to grand stages. Every performance is like a little magic show!

So, where shall we start, darlings? Let me take you on a whirl through my Milan adventures, from the pink tulle dreams to the breathtaking sights.

Monday - A Ballet Dream in a Beautiful City

As usual, I woke up with the first light of the day, feeling the city’s buzz already starting beneath my window. I headed downstairs for a delicious Italian breakfast with freshly baked bread, delicious pastries, and a perfectly strong cup of cappuccino. I mean, one must fuel up for a day of exploring, right? My first stop was Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, Milan’s awe-inspiring shopping arcade, a true architectural marvel with its majestic glass roof. It’s so beautiful – you simply have to take a moment to just sit, look, and soak it all in!

It's impossible not to get caught up in the whirlwind of shopping, so I treated myself to some exquisite silk scarves and delicate pearl jewellery from some charming boutique shops. It wouldn't be a trip to Milan without a few treats for the inner ballerina, right?

After all the excitement, I sought a little bit of serenity at the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie. It's quite extraordinary – the artwork is beautiful and I sat mesmerized, allowing the historical significance of the space to wash over me. I even spotted some exquisite embroidery detailing – and of course, I found a connection to the ballet world! I can’t help it, my mind always finds that ballerina thread in the tapestry of life.

By the afternoon, I felt that familiar buzz in my soul. You know what I'm talking about – the feeling that you need to move, to dance, to feel the magic of movement within your being! I made my way to the Teatro alla Scala, Milan’s most prestigious opera house, to watch an astounding ballet performance. The artistry, the passion, the grace - it all just poured onto the stage, taking me on a captivating journey. I was especially in awe of the prima ballerina – her movement was truly ethereal, like a feather floating on the wind. I swear, it had me wishing I could rewind and watch the performance again, but instead, I jotted down every note and detail I could capture. Maybe I'll use it for inspiration in my next choreography… or just write a new poem about it. My notebook always holds so much potential!

Later, I went on a lovely tram ride back to my little hotel, soaking up the view of the city, and finally collapsing on my bed in pure contentment. It's the small moments that make the big moments – like discovering the perfect pink shade of ice cream (oh yes, I devoured a generous scoop in an adorably chic little gelateria).

Tuesday - From Milan’s Fashion Heart to the Beauty of Lago Maggiore

Tuesday began with another blissful breakfast of freshly baked croissants, fragrant coffee, and delicious jams. I must admit, darling readers, my tastebuds have been awakened to a whole new world of culinary delight in Milan!

Then it was time to head to one of the fashion meccas of the world - Via Montenapoleone! The streets overflowed with stunning fashion houses. Gucci, Armani, Prada, Versace - every corner held a new masterpiece. I took my time, absorbing the intricate craftsmanship and exquisite designs. I felt like I was in a dream. Each storefront was more awe-inspiring than the last, making me swoon and admire every design detail.

As the day wound down, I found myself wanting to escape the bustling city. Luckily, Milan is within easy reach of some incredibly charming countryside, and so I booked a journey to Lake Maggiore. This stunning lake boasts incredible natural beauty. I felt my heart just melting as I took in the vibrant turquoise water and the rugged, snow-capped mountains that rose dramatically behind it. It’s definitely the ideal place to get lost in nature’s peaceful embrace.

I was utterly charmed by the town of Stresa and even braved a delicious “gelato con panna” – the richest, most velvety vanilla ice cream topped with lashings of fresh cream – while enjoying the most spectacular views from the promenade.

It was a day for embracing both the chic side and the relaxed charm of Italy. What a day!

Wednesday - Exploring Culture and Creating my own Milan Memories

Wednesday felt like a day designed for soaking in the rich culture of this beautiful city. The city buzzed with the aroma of freshly baked pastries and coffee as I wandered down cobbled streets lined with enchanting cafes.

I began with a wander through the Parco Sempione, where I sat enjoying the sunshine. As the day warmed up, I explored the Castello Sforzesco, its elegant architecture echoing stories of battles and grand soirées.

Speaking of stories, I can’t help but think about all the talented artists who have walked these streets, like the incredible Leonardo Da Vinci. I headed to the Pinacoteca di Brera, which is home to some truly breathtaking artworks. I was totally enthralled by the colours, the techniques, and the power of each piece. And, of course, there's always that magical connection with the ballet world. You can just imagine ballerinas swirling around these gallery halls, and I have to admit, a few dramatic poses made their way into my afternoon.

In the evening, the excitement of the night air began to stir, so I prepared for an extraordinary journey into the world of Italian cuisine. There is something absolutely magical about savouring authentic Italian cuisine - I tried a delectable "risotto alla Milanese", so creamy and rich. It was all about simple ingredients done flawlessly, just like a perfectly executed dance move! As I finished my meal, I had to catch the train back to the hotel. The energy of the city was beginning to rise. This town definitely knows how to stay up late!

Thursday - The Magic of a Milanese Opera Performance

It was another early morning – I love waking up with the sunshine, feeling so full of life. The coffee was so strong, it woke me up instantly – definitely something my sleepy, dancing body appreciates!

With my heart pounding with excitement for my Thursday outing, I spent the afternoon in preparation for a truly special treat – the opportunity to attend a grand performance at the Teatro alla Scala. The building was so beautiful, and the sound of the orchestra as it began to play was magical!

The performance that night was absolutely unforgettable – a mesmerizing rendition of Puccini's La Bohème, full of incredible singing and incredible costumes. The opera is just so beautifully constructed, filled with so many emotions that mirrored what I feel when dancing myself. It really is amazing to connect to different artistic worlds, to find common themes in various artistic forms! There is a feeling of universal love that flows throughout all art forms – maybe that is what gives all of us our creative spirit, darling readers?

By the time I was done with the performance, I felt an absolute surge of energy - it really is something special, and the energy stayed with me throughout my evening journey back to my cosy little hotel. It was like a little dance inside my mind, filling me with a warmth that lingered all evening. I even indulged in the city’s famed gelato!

Friday - Exploring Milan's Charm in Every Corner

My Friday in Milan was a leisurely affair, a perfect chance to continue absorbing the charm of the city at my own pace. I started the morning in a bustling cafe on Piazza della Repubblica – the café buzzed with locals, sharing breakfast and gossiping - all in this delicious Italian chatter. I was enchanted by it all. It was a beautiful glimpse into local life!

Later on, I wandered down the Via della Spiga where designer fashion houses are dotted between the boutiques. The whole area oozed sophistication, and I had so much fun people-watching - spotting elegant ladies in beautiful tailored outfits and dapper gentlemen wearing perfectly fitted suits, each with that classic, stylish flair.

Then, I was drawn back to my favourite haven - the Parco Sempione - it's truly one of the best spots to watch the world go by. I took some time to read a book and enjoy the sunshine, soaking up the calm before heading out for more excitement in the city.

Saturday - Milan's Enchanting Environs

Saturday started with me wandering through the bustling market of Navigli, soaking up the charm of the local sellers and their colourful wares, especially enjoying the vibrant fabric stands bursting with all sorts of beautiful designs, colours and textures. Maybe it was that early morning coffee, maybe it was the creative energy, maybe it was simply Milan's charm, but I had a little inspiration to take home, so I snagged a few delightful pieces to start a little creative sewing project for my return.

The Navigli market is a treasure trove of wonderful things. There is something truly wonderful about taking time to browse through a market and find unexpected gems. It’s something like a choreographed ballet of sights, sounds and colours!

The afternoon was spent in the quaint town of Bergamo and was an absolute dream! It's one of those towns where the old world charm still feels so very present, from the historic architecture to the cobbled streets, all brimming with stories from a time gone by. There were quaint shops selling locally handcrafted goods and quaint restaurants tempting passersby with delicious scents and sounds. And it seemed like every corner was picture-perfect.

Bergamas is full of artistic inspiration!

The night ended in an idyllic lakeside setting as I caught the last train to the town of Lecco, nestled in the shadows of the Alps. It was a picture postcard evening, the water rippling, the mountains imposing. I spent some quiet time with the town, feeling a peaceful kind of energy – the air seemed to buzz with tranquility.

The Italian evenings are magical, like a symphony of delicious smells, soft lights and calming peace.

Sunday - Time to Reflect, Refuel, and Reconnect

On Sunday, I simply allowed myself to rest, enjoying a beautiful afternoon exploring Milan's stunning cathedrals. The Duomo – oh, the Duomo – just imagine this iconic architectural masterpiece draped in pink tulle. Yes, I have dreams! This truly majestic building is one of those sights that can’t help but inspire.

This week has been full of discoveries – discovering the beauty of Milan's hidden gems and experiencing the magic of Italian ballet and culture. As the week comes to an end, I find myself feeling filled with gratitude for all the incredible moments, and I cannot wait to tell you more about the beauty of Italy and Milan's vibrant art scene! Until next Monday, darlings, embrace your inner ballerina and go out there and sparkle!
